OYO Bailbrook Lodge, Bath

Bath|1.77km from Bathampton Down
Currently driving home down the M4 after having no alternative but to check out early after only 1 night of our 2 night stay. To start off with, on our drive to the hotel we phoned up to double check what time reception was open until as we may be late due to traffic. My partner gave all the booking details to be told that they couldn’t find a booking for us, in the end my partner admittedly had to put the phone down as she was having to continuously repeat herself and which was causing her frustration and to panic a bit. Upon arrival my partner and I were pleasantly pleased with the look of the hotel from outside. Our minds were put at rest when we were checked in, no trouble finding our booking on arrival compared to when we phoned. We were then shown around the dining room and living room area which seemed rather dated yet comfortable. We were then taken down to our room downstairs from reception which was next to one other hotel room. This was then when I realised it wasn’t a 4 * standard room. Room very dated and musky smell, electrical wires exposed in the bathroom, see picture. Nonetheless we accepted it was clean and comfortable and make do with what he has got despite not meeting expectations. We spent one night which we would describe as reasonable even though our room was underneath the main entrance we could hear people walking in and out and also hear next door snoring through the non-sound proof walls. Next morning breakfast we would say was actually pretty good, compliments to the waitress who was serving on her own yet was polite and helpful. We then went into Bath for the day, when we arrived back in the afternoon to be greeted by several cars full of women on a hen party who had arrived to stay at the hotel. Whilst we had no problem with that the main room being used by the hens was the bedroom next door to us in the basement. We went into our room but all we could hear was loud music, laughing and joking from the next room through the non-sound proofed walls. We soon realised that we would probably get no sleep. My partner went to reception and asked if we can be moved to a different room, to be told no other rooms available and that the hen party was going out soon. My partner said yes they are going out but they will have to return at some point during the night. My partner then asked what would happen if we checked out early and she was advised that we would only get 50% back of remaining 1 night stay. Because of the loud noise coming from the room next door we then decided to check out and drive the 150 miles back home there and then.

The Bird, Bath

Great location 5 min walk from Pulteney Bridge - lovely terrace overlooking the bowling green and cricket ground towards the Abbey. We had a room in one of the more recent additions to the Bird - whilst this was next to the Bar and terrace it was very quiet and extremely spacious. Fantastic spa bath and large separate shower. Not given 5 stars as the room, whilst really plush did not have a window with a view ( skylight with electric blind) and was quite warm. I’m not in favour of automatically air conditioning rooms, however, this room does need additional cooling. The Hotel are aware of the need for cooling and will no doubt address the issue. Would certainly not stop us booking again - special mention for Caroline and Howard - members of the team you should be proud of.

Macdonald Bath Spa Hotel

We booked directly, in January, with the hotel taking up an offer for our March stay. This is a 5 star hotel and we upgraded our room a few days before arrival. The room was lovely with a comfortable 4 poster bed and all facilities as expected. Breakfast was not as we had expected for a 5 star hotel. We had to choose a time to eat, did the earlier people have all the yoghurt? By the time (8.45) we arrived we were scraping the bottom of the deep jar and our cooked breakfast was a meagre portion. The potato cake was very thin, like cardboard, a single thin rasher of bacon and a slice of mushroom. Thank goodness I asked for a grilled tomato! We had to ask for toast that 1st morning. The coffee pot was barely enough for one, we had to ask for more! We had booked to eat in the Vellore Restaurant for my birthday but decided to cancel this, as seemed expensive and breakfast had put us off! So we chose to eat from the bar menu instead, taking the meal in the lounge. Unfortunately the room was pretty cold, we heard other guests complaining about this. Guests can ask for fresh milk to go with the complimentary tea and coffee, but be aware a tiny jug of milk is £6. However the staff were friendly and extremely helpful and the hotel is well situated for the town.

The Ayrlington

We stayed at the Ayrlington in the Orchid room which is situated below road/car park level so is a little on the gloomy side & in need of some touch up paint but as we didn't too spend much time in the room during our 2 night stay over Easter it wasn't a major issue. The bed was very comfortable, the shower was hot & powerful enough & the room has a safety deposit box & a large flatscreen TV. The a la carte breakfast overlooking the hotel's garden was delightful with several hot choices as well as fruit, cereals etc & was served over 3 sittings. The bar was a nice place to relax & drinks were reasonably priced for a city hotel. It costs £10 to park in the car park per night. Staff throughout our stay were extremely friendly & helpful. For us this hotel was perfectly positioned, being able bodied over sixties, the hotel is close enough for the sights in Bath city centre (around a 10 min walk to the Roman Baths, the Abbey or Pulteney Bridge/weir) but just far enough to be away from any noise.
The Kennard Boutique Guesthouse

I enjoyed a three night stay at this lovely hotel. Although I was traveling solo, I chose one the larger rooms. Beautifully furnished, exceptionally clean, comfortable, and spacious. I loved it here! I did not need a car. Everything I wanted to see in Bath was within easy walking distance to the Kennard. After a busy day of sightseeing, I appreciated the quiet location of the hotel. Breakfast was served in a pretty dining room. Graciously served, with delicious generous portions. There are several choices of cooked breakfasts, so you don't have to eat the same thing every day if you don't want to. Another feature I enjoyed during my stay was the little ”honesty bar”, where you can help yourself to a glass of wine, or a drink. Most of all, I was happy with the wonderful staff. Everyone I encountered during my stay was welcoming, friendly, and helpful. Staying at the Kennard was the highlight of my visit to Bath, and I highly recommend this hotel.
