First explain that this is not an advertisement. My husband and I chose this hotel for the honeymoon. I originally booked the black penny next door. I chose this house because there is no room. I have lived for three nights and I feel very good. It is purely a big hit. The hotel with the purpose of watching the valley listening to the birdsong did not live up to our expectations. Our beds face the lush green valley, and the morning sun shines on the opposite tropical vegetation, with different colors every minute. If there is a shower, there will be fog, and the fairy will fly. The breakfast was booked and it was extremely rich, especially the freshly squeezed juice and Indonesian fried noodles. It was an hour and a half to chat with the gentleman and enjoy the incomparable mountain view opposite, and the heart was especially calm. The hotel currently has only 9 rooms, very small and almost no other guests, very private. There is a small parking lot in front of the door. It takes about 10 minutes by car to go to Ubud Palace. The hotel's service is completely private butler, with about a dozen waiters before and after, but it doesn't feel noisy, very polite and respectful to us. The private pool is not big, the feeling of the bathing pool, the height of 170 is probably as deep as the chest, and the water is very clean. I really like the bathroom in his house. It has good lighting and has two basins. The hot water is very comfortable. Bath and shampoo have mosquito repellent effects. Choosing a hotel and eating like a benevolent person, I am more willing to spend money in invincible scenery and quality, I feel that this experience is very worthwhile. But I feel that this hotel is not suitable for parents or parents, or for couples, after all, too romantic and too cured.

Black Penny Villas Ubud

Ubud Bali|0.24km from Mandapa Spa
It’s all about the View! Black Penny is perched on the side of a valley with spectacular views down to the river and rice paddies below. The reception / restaurant is located on the Top level and the villas cascade down the side of the valley with 2-3 villas on each level. Black Penny is not an option for anyone with disabilities. As the name suggests the decor is very dark, based on the grey volcanic rock of Bali and the dark red hardwood. It is a style that works very well, and the villa’s ambiance matches the spectacular views of the lush tropical valley. The furniture and lighting in our villa was very tasteful and the king bed was very comfortable. The sliding door in the bedroom opens up to a small deck, an infinity pool, and a SPECTACULAR garden framed view of the valley and river below. This is why you stay at Black Penny….the photos don’t lie! Everything was clean, (but there were a few minor maintenance opportunities). The pool was crystal clear, the water was a tiny bit chilly at first, but very refreshing. The villa is a haven from the heat, and we spent the hottest part of the day lounging around our private pool enjoying the aircon. It is tropical Bali. The doors don’t close properly, there are geckos, frogs and bugs, there is mould on the walls, the bathroom is outdoors….. this is all part of Bali’s relaxed casual beauty and charm. I wouldn’t change it for the world! ALL the staff were extremely pleasant and helpful, and always met our requests with a smile. Breakfast was included in our rate, and served in the room if requested. The western breakfast was a little bland but passable. We only ate dinner once at the restaurant once, but it was nice and competitive price for a luxury villa. Black Penny is a 10 minute (IDR60,000) taxi ride to/from Ubud Town centre and a Grab Taxi will be there within minutes, or sooner. We took the opportunity to walk in to Ubud one day visiting a number of Art Galleries on the way. There are a number of very good and very cheap restaurants within a couple of minutes walk, try the BBQ Pork just up the road ….there are also a couple of Minimarts close by. On the negative side, the “in villa” amenities could be improved. There are only come 2 small water bottles and sachet coffee with powdered creamer. It seems picky, but at this Top End price we felt the “low end motel” standard room amenities were a poor decision. Balinese coffee, a coffee plunger, and milk/cream would make a big difference. An opportunity for improvement! Black Penny is a beautiful Ubud Balinese experience. Try it!

Mathis Retreat Ubud

Ubud Bali|0.39km from Mandapa Spa
Two of us went up to Ubud for the night to celebrate my birthday. I’ve stayed at Mathis Retreat a few times over the years, going right back to before the name change, I’ve and eaten in the restaurant on other occasions when not staying there. The view from the pool, restaurant and some of the rooms, for me, is the best in Ubud. I’ve also stayed at their sister hotel in Amed, and the place in Bumbak is close to where I live. The restaurant there is great. So it’s safe to say I like the group very much. But my latest visit didn’t go well. After spending a nice afternoon in town we came back to take baths, relax and get ready for dinner at Locavore. But there was no hot water in our room (11) and not really much by way of an apology. So a quick splash under a cold shower instead. Next morning, still nothing until eventually we were told we could use a bungalow to shower in. But it felt like we were having to chase for something to be done. A quick search online revealed that this seems to be a bit of a recurring problem. It makes a massive difference to a guest’s enjoyment of the hotel. Separately, a few other observations: * Coffee machine in the restaurant broken. * Nasty bread at breakfast. Cheapest possible white bread for toast and a fake bagel! It was just a cheap bun with a dimple in it, and not especially fresh. * 45 minute delay in bringing us an iron after we requested one. * no hairdryer in room. * Just like the bread, the toiletries are all the cheapest possible chemical smelling ones. Surely such a lovely hotel would be better off charging a dollar a night more and providing something decent? It creates the wrong impression. I wanted to come back next month as my brother is visiting from UK but I was nervous about making a booking in case things go wrong again. I didn’t really want to write a negative review. It makes me sad. I contacted the hotel directly to discuss our stay but they didn’t respond.

The staff were really friendly and helpful. The location great and near to Ubud center. The villa was so old unfortunately, there’s water coming from the bathroom selling and the smell is horrible because of old wood and humidity compilations! The bugs yes everywhere, I understand it’s in the middle of forest but there’s ants coming from the wood wall! Also the lights where so weak and depressing! The villa kind of dark ! There was a public swimming pool also, and we had private pool at our villa but it’s so cold due to no Sun ray can reach it( indoor pool) . The message really amazing with big open window front the forest! The view from the villa was phenomenal! They have one restaurant but with delicious food and clean! The gym was closed! But there’s a good news for you! They’re doing a renovation, it’ll take approximately 1 year to finish all villas! So for me I believe I’ll come back for sure after the renovation!

A hotel where you can receive the best service. I love Ritz, who never takes no for an answer. The food is delicious both in the morning and in the evening. The course dinner was quite large, but it was all so delicious that I ate it all without leaving any leftovers. I thought it would be nice if they could hold a few more free yoga classes. There was only one box of tissues in the room, and I quickly ran out of them. You can have it delivered right away by phone, but other hotels don't have one in the room, so I hope they can improve this. But I can't say enough about the new hotel to have the best service and delicious food.

Eating breakfast in front of slowly dispersing clouds is the best experience of this trip. It may be that the hotel is relatively old, the toilets are not temperature sensitive smart toilets, and the facilities are average; the environment is good, open the balcony to enjoy a lush canyon privately; the service is the biggest failure in this trip, and the most anticipated local experience activities have been repeatedly communicated It was only three times that the choice of chargeable items was provided, and during the whole check-in process, I didn't realize the intention at all, only a professional fake smile. As a whole, it is an experience that is not as good as 2,000 yuan in domestic intercontinental, and it is not recommended.

My husband and I had the best time at this villa hotel. The staff here are very friendly and always smiling. The breakfast was delicious and they understood us as Moslins and we ate halal food so they provided us with food as requested. The hotel staff also organized our entire tour in Bali for us. We participated in 4 groups from them and they were all great. I have no complaints about this hotel, it is great and great value. If you don't mind a frog on your way to the hotel or bugs that occasionally appear in the toilet, you will love this place.

More about Bali

Introduction to Bali

Bali, an Indonesian island known for its forested volcanic mountains, iconic rice paddies, and stunning beaches, is the country's most famous tourist destination. Filled with ancient temples, rich arts and crafts, and a vibrant nightlife, Bali offers a kaleidoscopic blend of natural beauty and cultural depth.

Tips for Travelling to Bali

Bali's main international gateway is Ngurah Rai International Airport, located near the capital city, Denpasar. Travelers can explore Bali through taxis, local buses, bicycles, motorbikes, or even hired cars.

The official currency is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). Most hotels and restaurants accept credit cards, but having some cash on hand for local markets and smaller venues is recommended. Indonesian is the official language, but English is widely spoken in tourist areas.

As for visas, many nationalities can enter Indonesia visa-free for up to 30 days, but it's best to check before your journey.

Popular Attractions in Bali

Bali offers a wealth of cultural and natural attractions. Explore the ancient temples of Tanah Lot and Uluwatu, or immerse yourself in the artistic heritage of Ubud, Bali's cultural heart. Visit the Tegalalang Rice Terraces and the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary for unique experiences.

Bali's beaches are equally enticing, with Kuta Beach, Seminyak Beach, and Nusa Dua Beach offering vibrant beach life. Surfing enthusiasts will love the waves at Uluwatu and Canggu.

Weather, Best Time to Visit, and What to Wear

Bali enjoys a tropical climate with temperatures fairly consistent year-round. The best times to visit are during the dry season, from April to October. Bring lightweight, breathable clothing, a hat, and sunscreen to protect from the sun. Also, remember to dress modestly when visiting temples.

Choosing Your Ideal Hotel in Bali

For luxury beachfront accommodation, consider the Legian Bali or the W Bali in Seminyak. In Ubud, the Hanging Gardens of Bali offers a unique luxury experience with its Instagram-famous infinity pool.

For budget travelers, the Puri Garden Hotel and Hostel in Ubud offers comfort and excellent service. The Dash Hotel Seminyak, with its eclectic and colorful design, is an Instagram-worthy stay.
