❤️Recommended Reason: The Tiger Leaping Gorge (Shangri-La section) has the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain on its southern bank, with its main peak reaching an altitude of 5596 meters, and the Haba Snow Mountain on its northern bank, with an altitude of 5396 meters. Constrained by the high mountains on both sides, the river narrows to just over 50 meters wide after entering the gorge, and at its narrowest point, a tiger or leopard could leap across, hence the name Tiger Leaping Gorge. The gorge is located on the upper reaches of the Jinsha River, with a total length of 17 kilometers and a winding path of 25 kilometers. With a vertical drop of over 3900 meters, it is one of the deepest gorges in the world. Getting There - we hired a driver that took us from Shangri-La to the start of the hiking next to the highway, we noticed that this is also possible by taking a bus but since we sleep over in Halfway was convenient to have a driver that would pickup us the day after at Tina’s guesthouse with our luggage Attractions - beautiful and challenging hiking with lot of wonderful landscapes, the first day we started to hike around 9:30 in the morning and finished around 7 pm when we arrived to Halfway guests house, the second day we started around 10 am to get to Tina guesthouse around lunch time where we started a new hiking to descend to the bottom of the middle tiger leaping Gorge, this was outstanding and with very less people (to access here you will have to pay a fee to the families that are helping to keep the trial in conditions, in total you might have to pay around 30 rmb) Hotels - Halfway guesthouse the first night and Tina guesthouse if you want to stay one more day, in our case our driver took us Felei right after. Tiger Leaping Gorge is honestly one of the best hikes I’ve been on! We went during the Summer so it was really hot during the day, however got a bit cooler after sunset. Biggest advice is to just follow the one path and there are signs to guide you along the way. You’ll bump into many animals roaming freely on the mountains🐄🐴🐐 There are many guesthouses along the way so you’ll never get thirsty or die of hunger! After about 2 hours you’ll stop at Naxi Family Guesthouse & fuel your energy with some noodles or rice dishes. Another hour you’ll find the famous 28 bends (literally so many bends😂) -mind the horse poo 😌. Other places recommended to eat is Tea-horse Guesthouse & the next day of the hike, Tina’s Guesthouse (you can book a bus here to Lijiang or Shangri-La). Tiger Leaping Gorge is the main gorge of the Yangtze River, located in Shangri-La, halfway of both Shangri-La city and Lijiang city (~ 90 km). This park is surrounded by mountains, you even can see Haba and Yulong snow peaks, few waterfalls and caves. If you are a rock enthusiast, this is a great place for you! TLG has three reaches, with different levels of trekking difficulty or the main scenic spot in middle reach. Few restaurants are available. You have few options to visit this area: 1️⃣ Visit Middle reach scenic spot (pictures), were you climb up and down stairs. Perfect for one day trip, only will take you a couple hours to visit the canyon spot. This area is inclusive for people with disabilities and elders, if you pay an extra fee you can ride the electric stairs all from summit to lower spot (yet, you will be required to climb couple dozens of stairs to reach electric stairs). 2️⃣ You can either go back to Lijiang or take another bus to Shangri-La. That will be an additional hour and a half. This city has no entry fee, and it’s the only site in Tibet that doesn’t request special permit to foreigners to visit. 3️⃣ There is a 3-4 days trekking tour that includes all reaches. Most people indicates upper reaches are the most beautiful. But is only available for trekking groups that will stay in local guesthouses (mostly Tina’s or Judy’s). There tours include visits to local villages. There is a public bus available from Lijiang to TLG, leaves at 9:30am and gets back around 2pm. Starting our trip in Lijiang, Yunnan, and ending at Tina’ house is a popular choice for many hikers. #mytripvlog The timing of our hike during the Dragon Boat Festival and rainy season could have been challenging, but we were fortunate to only encounter light rain on the first day. This made the trail less muddy and more comfortable than expected, which is always a bonus when hiking. One of the advantages of hiking Tiger Leaping Gorge is the presence of vendors along the trail. They offer opportunities to recharge and refuel, particularly before tackling the famous 28 bends. The availability of signals and arrows throughout the trail makes navigation easy, ensuring that hikers don't get lost. Additionally, the locals with horses provide further assistance for those who may require help ascending the trail. This is beneficial for those who want to conserve their energy or have physical limitations. Choosing to stay overnight at the Horse Tea Hotel, a few kilometers before the Halfway House, was a wise decision. It allowed us to have a more relaxed and easier start for the following day's hike, ensuring that we had energy to continue our journey.
