The Songhua River originates from the Tianchi Lake in Changbai Mountain, like a green ribbon running through the whole city of Jilin City. It ranks third among the major river basins in the country after the Yangtze River and the Yellow River. From the end of December to the beginning of February every year, the embankments on both sides of the Songhua River in Jilin City are good places to watch the smog. It merges into Heilongjiang near Tongjiang. The total length is 1,927 kilometers, and the basin area is about 550,000 square kilometers, spanning three provinces and regions including Heilongjiang and Jilin.
