Alice Lake Saddle Loop: Sawtooth's 11.6 mi Teal Payoffeasytravelpost #SawtoothWilderness #AliceLake — traveler post in Stanley

Alice Lake Saddle Loop: Sawtooth's 11.6 mi Teal Payoffeasytravelpost #SawtoothWilderness #AliceLake

#easytravelpost Alice Lake is the Sawtooths' postcard—reached from the Tin Cup Trailhead at Pettit Lake, 30 min south of Stanley on ID-75. Free wilderness permit (self-issue at the trailhead), no entry fee, no reservations for day use; pack out human waste (wag bags encouraged), campfires banned in the Alice/Toxaway basin. I arrived at 6:40 a.m., lot already 60% full, filled the vault-toilet stop in Stanley first (no water at trailhead). The hike is 11.6 mi round trip, 1,600 ft gain: 2 mi gentle along Pettit Creek, then a steady climb through lodgepole to the Alice basin at 8,600 ft. El Capitan's fin reflects in the teal water; I ate lunch on the west slab and watched marmots whistle. The "saddle loop" continues past Alice to Twin Lakes, over the low saddle, and back via the Toxaway junction—add 6 mi if you want the full ring. Mistake: I wore trail runners and the Pettit Creek crossing (early season) soaked them to the ankle—sandals-for-fords or waterproof boots. Another: I filtered lake water without a second pass and got a gut cramp; treat twice. Would you day-hike Alice as an 11.6 mi push, or backpack in and camp at Twin Lakes for the 6 a.m. El Capitan glow?

Why do many tour groups skip Stanley? — traveler post in Stanley

Why do many tour groups skip Stanley?

When I first saw photos of Stanley, Tasmania, I was a bit surprised. Such a quiet seaside town, why do so many Tasmania guides barely mention it? Later, when I compared different itineraries, I realized it’s not that Stanley isn’t worth visiting. It’s just that many trips cut this stop to save time. Stanley is indeed a bit far. From Cradle Mountain, you have to drive northwest for a while. If the goal is just to complete the itinerary, this stop is easy to remove. But because of that, when you actually get here, you’ll find far fewer tourists. There’s no crowded viewing platform or endless tour buses. The whole town keeps a very relaxed pace. 🌋 Many people come to Stanley for The Nut. The first time I saw it, I thought it was just an ordinary hill. Later I learned it’s actually a volcanic plug (The Nut). Walking slowly up the trail, you have the coastline on one side and the whole town of Stanley on the other. On clear days, the view is especially wide open. If you don’t want to hike, you can take the cable car up. Either way, it’s worth spending some time here. ☕ What really made me like Stanley isn’t the attractions. It’s the small-town life here. The cafes by the street, seafood restaurants, and people strolling along the coast. No one rushes you to the next stop. Often, just sitting by the sea and zoning out for a while is already very relaxing. This feeling is rare at popular spots. So in the end, we kept Stanley on the itinerary. Not because it’s a must-see. But because a trip to Tasmania shouldn’t be only about the classic sights. Sometimes, a quiet little town becomes the most unforgettable stop of the whole trip. Many guests say after returning: They didn’t expect much from Stanley, but it ended up being the biggest surprise. If you want to know the real hidden gems here, feel free to chat with us~~

🥾 Guide to the Stanley Beach Hike in Hong Kong — traveler post in Stanley

🥾 Guide to the Stanley Beach Hike in Hong Kong

Located on the southern side of Hong Kong, the hike between Stanley Beach and Repulse Bay is one of the most scenic coastal walks on Hong Kong Island. This easy-to-moderate trail takes you along dramatic cliffs overlooking the South China Sea, offering sweeping ocean views and peaceful stretches away from the city’s skyscrapers. 🌊 What the Hike is Like The route typically follows sections of the Twins Trail and Wilson Trail, climbing above Stanley before descending toward Repulse Bay. The trail winds through lush greenery, granite steps, and lookout points where you’ll see Stanley Peninsula, distant islands, and endless blue water. On clear days, the view from the ridge above Stanley is one of the most underrated coastal panoramas in Hong Kong. ⏱️ Distance & Difficulty · Distance: ~4–6 km depending on route · Time: 1.5–2.5 hours · Difficulty: Moderate (mainly because of the stair climb near the start) Most hikers begin near Stanley Market and head up toward the iconic Twin Peaks viewpoint before descending toward Repulse Bay. The climb can be steep at first, but once you reach the ridge the views make the effort worthwhile. 📸 Highlights Along the Way · Panoramic viewpoints over the Stanley Peninsula · Ocean views toward the islands south of Hong Kong · Quiet forest sections along the ridge · Ending the hike at the beautiful Repulse Bay Beach ☀️ Travel Tips · Start early morning or late afternoon to avoid heat. · Bring plenty of water — shade is limited on some sections. · End your hike in Stanley and grab seafood or drinks along the waterfront promenade. ✨ Why it’s worth it: This hike combines Hong Kong’s best elements — beaches, jungle hills, and dramatic coastal views — all in one short adventure.

Towards the Three Antarctic Islands ~ Falkland Islands — traveler post in Stanley

Towards the Three Antarctic Islands ~ Falkland Islands

On the third day of the voyage, we finally landed on the island for the first time. Under the guidance of the expedition team members, everyone went to the locker room to dress according to the landing group. After completing the disinfection in an orderly manner, we changed to the assault boat to land. Today the outdoor temperature is about 9 degrees, the weather is sunny and cloudless, and the sea situation is relatively stable. After docking, we walked about 3 kilometers along the red flag and arrived at the steep cliff about 380 meters southwest of the island. We observed the habitat of black-browed albatrosses and crested yellow-browed penguins up close. The number of them gathered in this area is very spectacular, and they are not afraid of humans at all. They just quietly groom and bask in the sun, occasionally looking up and looking around, and then continuing to squint; Xijiao Island is 6 kilometers long and 4 kilometers wide. It is an IBA controlled area. The island is home to short-winged boat ducks, South American penguins and red-legged giant falcons, as well as Conro's dwarf dolphins that surround the archipelago waters. The landing point in the afternoon is Saunders Island, located in the northwest of the Falkland Islands. It is the fourth largest island in the Falkland Islands. There are flocks of sheep on the island. It is also the residence of king penguins, yellow-browed penguins, white-browed penguins and long-browed penguins. From the speedboat, you can see from a distance a large group of penguins with their hips swaying and waiting in line for us to dock on the beach. From time to time, there are a few curious penguins following the team. November every year is the season for penguins to hatch eggs. If you are lucky, you will also see penguin babies who have not yet shed their fur playing on the beach. There is a small group of seals gathering at the Elephant Horn on the island, and occasionally you can see whales foraging near the port. #FalklandIslands #AntarcticIslands #antarctic #falklandislands
