Rwanda 🇷🇼🦍🌿⛰️
If you want an African travel experience with lush green mountains, rainforests, wildlife, and gorilla trekking, Rwanda is one of the standout countries.
This small East African country is nicknamed the "Land of a Thousand Hills" because of its landscape full of green mountains and hills. Importantly, you can combine mountain gorillas, chimpanzees, the Big Five, and Lake Kivu in a single trip.
📍 5 Must-See Places
1. Volcanoes National Park 🦍🌋
Rwanda's number one highlight and a bucket-list destination for wildlife lovers.
Located in the northwest of the country, this park encompasses volcanoes in the Virunga Massif and is home to mountain gorillas, golden monkeys, and numerous bird species. (Visit Rwanda)
The most popular activity is gorilla trekking, where you hike into the forest with a ranger to find gorilla families. Once found, you can spend about an hour observing them. The actual trek can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours. Depending on the gorilla's location on the day (Visit Rwanda)
Gorilla Permit Fee: Currently stated at US$1,500 per person per day, and participants must be at least 15 years old (Visit Rwanda)

5. Kigali & Kigali Genocide Memorial 🏙️🕊️
The capital, Kigali, is the starting point for most trips and a city worth spending at least a day in.
A key landmark is the Kigali Genocide Memorial in Gisozi, which serves as both a memorial and an educational center about the 1994 genocide of the Tutsi people.
This site is the burial place of over 250,000 victims and offers visitors the opportunity to learn about history. This includes reflecting on issues of discrimination and preventing future violence (Visit Rwanda).
Visitors should dress respectfully and maintain a quiet atmosphere to honor the place.
Highlights: 🕊️ History • 🏙️ Kigali • ☕ Rwandan cafes and coffee
⸻
🍽️ Rwandan food you should try:
🥩 Brochettes — grilled meat skewers
🥬 Isombe — mashed cassava leaves seasoned with spices

☀️ Best time to visit:
Rwanda is near the equator, but much of its land is at high altitudes, resulting in relatively comfortable weather year-round. Kigali has an average daily temperature of around 21°C (Visit Rwanda).
🌤️ June–mid September
This is the main dry season. Roads and hiking trails are generally easier to navigate, ideal for gorilla trekking and safaris.
🌧️ Mid-February–May
This is one of the main rainy seasons.
🌧️ Mid-September–Mid-December
This is another rainy season (Visit Rwanda).
Gorilla trekking is possible year-round, but if you want to avoid wet and slippery trails, the dry season is more convenient.
⸻
🗺️ Recommended number of days
For first-time visitors, we recommend approximately 8-10 days:
Kigali
↓
🦁 Akagera National Park 2 days
↓
🦍 Volcanoes National Park 2 days
↓
🌊 Lake Kivu 1-2 days
↓
🐒 Nyungwe National Park 2 days
Visit Rwanda itself offers a 9-day itinerary that combines the three main national parks with Lake Kivu, covering the Big Five, Gorillas, and Primate Tracking – a very well-rounded itinerary for a first trip.
⸻
🛂 Visa Information
Rwanda has a relatively convenient visa policy for tourists. The Immigration Office states that citizens of all countries can apply for a Visa on Arrival without prior application, and online application is also available before departure (migration.gov.rw).
For those not in the fee-exempt groups, the official website states a single-entry visa fee of no more than US$50. Please check the latest conditions before flying. (migration.gov.rw)

📌 Tips Before You Travel
· Gorilla Permits should be booked in advance, especially during the dry season, as the number of trekkers is limited (Visit Rwanda).
· Prepare sturdy trekking shoes, long-sleeved shirts, long pants, gloves, and a raincoat for gorilla trekking.
· Gorilla hunting can take several hours, so be physically prepared.
· Nyungwe has a chance of rain throughout the year, so a rain jacket is recommended even during the dry season.
· Lake Kivu is ideal to insert between the Volcanoes and Nyungwe to avoid an overly strenuous trekking trip.
· If you want to combine gorilla trekking, safari, and chimpanzee experience, allow at least 8-10 days.
⸻
✨ Summary
Rwanda may be a small country... But the travel experience is packed with highlights:
🦍 Volcanoes National Park — Gorilla Trekking
🐒 Nyungwe — Chimpanzee and Canopy Walk
🦁 Akagera — Big Five Safari
🌊 Lake Kivu — Lake and Mountains
🕊️ Kigali — Capital and Historical Site
The best part is being able to visit Gorilla + Chimpanzee + Safari + Mountains + Lakes all in one trip, and the country's terrain isn't as extensive as many other African countries.
