Potato Chip Rock in San Diego|Iconic Life Photo Spot! — traveler post in Poway

Potato Chip Rock in San Diego|Iconic Life Photo Spot!

A must-visit trendy spot near LA — Potato Chip Rock, hidden at the summit of Mt. Woodson in San Diego 🌄 The Truth From photos, it looks like a thin potato chip hanging over a deep abyss, as if it’s about to fall any second. But actually, the rock is quite close to the ground; the visual illusion is what makes it so popular! However, standing on the rock for a photo isn’t easy at all: · One-way hike takes over 2 hours, steep slope, requires stamina throughout · You have to queue to get on the rock, even on weekdays there are long lines · Climbing the rock requires arm strength, similar to free climbing, a bit challenging 💡 Practical Tips · Gear: Bring plenty of drinking water; it’s windy and you sweat a lot in summer, so remember a jacket · Outfit: Baseball cap + black tank top + leggings + sneakers, comfortable and photogenic · Experience: Standing on the rock overlooking the panorama is stunning; your legs may shake, but your social media photos will be amazing — totally worth it! 🚗 For checking in at Potato Chip Rock from Los Angeles, I choose ICARLIFESTYLE car rental · Thoughtful service, worry-free communication Chinese-speaking staff available throughout, zero language barrier; free phone holder & car charger provided, making self-driving easier. · Wide range of vehicles, freedom of choice Choose from gas, electric, or hybrid cars, from economical models to luxury brands like Mercedes, BMW, Audi, meeting different travel needs. · Transparent and reliable, safety guaranteed Real photos of actual vehicles, what you see is what you get

Potato Chip Rock, one of the most photogenic hiking spots in San Diego

💕Potato Chip Rock was named one of National Geographic's "Top 10 Most Creative Photography Locations in the World." How you capture the shot depends entirely on your imagination and composition! If it weren't for everyone lining up to check in, I could have gotten even more creative! Hahaha 😂 💕Started around 8:20 AM from Lake Poway Park. The trail isn't too difficult, and going early means less sun exposure. The round trip takes just over 4 hours, which I personally found quite easy! 💕There are portable toilets, trash bins, and tables and chairs to rest at during the first half of the hike! ⚠️Bring enough water (2-3 bottles), snacks or other supplies, hiking shoes (non-slip), and sunscreen. 📍Parking: Lake Poway Park, $10 parking fee on weekends. 📍Follow the signs for MT. Woodson Summit to get to Potato Chip Rock.

Potato Chip Rock in San Diego

On the first day of Xiao An's spring break, we decided to climb Mt Woodson, where the so-called 9th scariest sight in the world, Potato Chip Rock, is located. As for what the first eight are, I have no idea. It always seems impressive when something is ranked in the world. Potato Chip Rock is located in San Diego, about a two-hour drive from Los Angeles. For those planning to visit Potato Chip Rock, take note: There are two routes to get there. One is the west route, starting from the parking lot of Lake Poway Park, located at 14644 Lake Poway Rd, Poway, CA 92074. This is a state park in California, and parking fees apply. Then you hike around the lake, which offers beautiful views, but the journey is longer, nearly 6 kilometers one way, and it takes at least two hours for the average person to reach Potato Chip Rock. The other route is the east line, near Mt Woodson Road off Highway 67, next to the Cal Fire Ramona Station firehouse, where there's a rather hidden entrance with a small sign that reads Mt Woodson Trail. There is no parking lot here, but parking along Highway 67 is permitted. This route is about 3.5 kilometers long, and apart from a dirt path at the entrance, the rest is paved with asphalt all the way up. The road surface is good, but the gradient is over 50 degrees, which is quite exhausting, and it also takes about an hour one way. There are some electronic transmission towers at the top of the mountain; this route is actually for maintenance vehicles and is not open to the public. Both routes have little shade, so it can get very hot in the summer, and it's important to bring enough drinking water. Today, we took this route. This place is actually a natural scene, just one point on the Mt Woodson hiking trail. There are indeed many visitors who come here, and it is said that on weekends, you generally have to queue for an hour to take photos on the rock. There are no facilities on this mountain, no shops, no benches, no toilets, no trash cans, and naturally, no ropes to charge for taking photos. Finally, the closest distance from this rock to the slope below, I estimated it to be about 15 meters, and below is a steep slope, which is actually quite terrifying. Moreover, climbing onto this rock is not too easy, so safety is a must!

San Diego Zoo Safari Park

San Diego Safari Park is a vast African wilderness where animals roam freely. Riding a tram slowly through the park, you can see giraffes' eyelashes up close, rhinos dozing in the grass, and herds of antelope kicking up dust. The air smells of hay and sunshine, and the guide points into the distance, saying that the cheetah there is just two years old. There are no glass walls or fences, only the most authentic forms of life under the vast sky.

Port of San Diego

San Diego is a gentle city bathed in sunshine. The Spanish-style buildings in Balboa Park gleam warmly in the sunlight, and beside the massive silhouette of the HOUSTON aircraft carrier, the Kiss of Victory sculpture captures an eternal sense of joy. Colorful houses huddle together in the Old Town, and the aroma of burritos wafts from street corners. The most pleasant experience is lying on Coronado Beach at dusk, watching the Pacific waves gently lapping in—unhurried and peaceful, just like the perfect California sunshine.

San Diego Zoo

The San Diego Zoo is like a wild oasis hidden in the city. Lush vegetation shelters spacious habitats where animals live at ease. Pandas lazily roll around hugging bamboo, koalas sleep soundly in eucalyptus trees, and butterflies flutter past your shoulders in the rainforest enclosure. There are no suffocating iron cages, only a perfectly balanced sense of distance—they live freely in their own world, and we quietly remain silent observers.

LEGOLAND California

visited when our children were young, and now that they’ve grown—to ages 12 and 14—we went back again, and they really enjoyed it. Since it was a weekday, it was a bit disappointing that a few places were closed; however, we still had a great time riding the attractions and having fun. Above all, the value for money was absolutely excellent.

La Jolla Cove

La Jolla Bay is like a jewel polished smooth by the waves. Seals lazily bask in the sun on the rocks, completely oblivious to the onlookers. At low tide, the tide pool reveals a miniature marine world—anemones' soft tentacles sway with the waves, and hermit crabs hurry along carrying their shells. On the cliffside paths, you'll always see people carrying surfboards heading towards that azure expanse. The beauty here is ordinary, so ordinary that it makes you want to stay and live here.

Old Town

Old Town San Diego is a page of Mexican nostalgia under the California sun. In courtyards surrounded by adobe houses, vibrant paper flowers adorn the pillars, and lively Latin melodies drift from street bands. Silver ornaments jingle in the craft shops, and the air is filled with the aroma of freshly baked tortillas. Taking a bite of a taco at an outdoor table, the sauce dripping onto the plate—the original, vibrant spirit of this land still lingers.
