Azrou’s Cedar Edge, the Barbary Macaque Troop and the Mist That Beats Marrakech Heateasytravelpost

#easytravelpost Azrou sits between Meknes and Midelt at ~1200 m, cedar forest starting where the stone streets end. I took a CTM bus from Fes (75 MAD, 2h), slept in a pension for 200 MAD, and walked the 3 km forest road to the monkey clearing at 8 a.m.—Barbary macaques (Macaca sylvanus) forage on the cedar edge, wild, not fed by the town anymore. Don’t hand-feed; a male lunged at my bag once when I unwrapped a date. The Azrou cooperative sells cedar boxes 80 MAD, carpets 500–5000 MAD, fixed price—no haggle. The cedar grove loop is 2h, moss on north trunks, snow patches in Feb. I paired it with the Ain Vittel spring bench in town for mint tea (10 MAD). Cards work at the Ensemble Artisanal, cash only at the roadside stall. Mistake: I wore a cotton hoodie in December and the 7°C mist chilled me to the bone—fleece plus wind shell. Another: I tried to pet a juvenile macaque; the mother barked and the troop closed ranks—keep 5 m. Would you stop in Azrou as a Fes–Midelt break, or base here for 2 days of cedar walks?

Unforgettable three-week Moroccan adventure — traveler post in Midelt

Unforgettable three-week Moroccan adventure

We spent three weeks in Morocco, starting in Casablanca and wrapping up in Marrakesh. Our journey included stops in Rabat, Tangier, Chefchaouen, Fes, Midelt, Merzouga, Erg Chebbi, Dades Gorge, Ait Ben Haddou, Marrakesh, and Essouira. We had a private vehicle and were accompanied by Younes, an English-speaking Moroccan who's self-taught, well-versed in Western cultures, and deeply knowledgeable about Islam. During our time together, we engaged in many insightful discussions. Younes truly served as an excellent ambassador for his culture and country. While we covered many of the popular tourist attractions, we were thrilled to also explore several lesser-known spots. Younes went above and beyond to ensure our trip was safe and unforgettable—and it absolutely was!

Hassan II Mosque

Visiting the Hassan II Mosque was the absolute highlight of my time in Casablanca. From the moment I stepped onto the oceanfront esplanade, I was struck by its sheer scale—the intricate zellij tilework, carved cedar ceilings, and the towering 210-meter minaret are breathtaking in person. The guided tour was well-organized and gave fascinating insight into Moroccan craftsmanship and Islamic tradition, but the most unforgettable moment was standing in the glass-floored prayer hall, watching the Atlantic waves roll directly beneath my feet. Even if you're not religious, this is a masterpiece of art and engineering that deserves a spot on any traveler's itinerary. Just be sure to arrive early for the best light and fewer crowds—it's an experience that will stay with me forever.

Kasbah of the Udayas

Since the movie "Mission Impossible 5" made it famous, the Udaya Castle has become a popular tourist destination. In the movie, Tom Cruise's car racing scene in the castle, where he drove directly from the steps of the castle into the sea, was filmed here.

Sahara Desert

Boulevard de la Corniche

Casablanca's Miami Beach Boulevard is the most beautiful traffic avenue here. Driving along this avenue, you can enjoy the beautiful coastal scenery and the magnificent sunset. You can also take a walk or exercise here in the evening, which feels really warm and comfortable.

Aït Benhaddou

【Ait Ben Haddou】The ancient city is located in Ouarzazate, Morocco, in an oasis on the edge of the Sahara Desert. The entire castle is composed of traditional Moroccan mud houses, mostly built with a mixture of licorice and terracotta. The appearance is slightly rough, but at a glance outside the ancient city, you can be shocked by its spectacular and sacred pattern. As early as 1987, it was listed as a World Cultural Heritage. Walking into the ancient city, you will find that these golden red adobe castles and turrets seem to have drilled out from the ground, which are stunning and dramatic. People can't help but admire the local construction technology, especially under the sunlight, these castles are even more charming. This place not only attracts tourists from all over the world, but also Hollywood directors favor this charming ancient city. Many movies that are popular with movie fans around the world have been filmed here, including "The Lost Tomb", "Star Wars Prequel", "Mission Impossible V", etc., so the ancient city of Haddou has also won the title of Hollywood in North Africa and has become a holy place for many movie lovers. Todgha Gorge

Todra Canyon is a very beautiful and steep canyon with steep peaks and underground rivers. The scenery here is very similar to the Antelope Canyon rocks in the United States, with layers of layers under the sunlight. In addition, there is an underground river here, which flows all year round and you can wade in the water, which is very interesting.

juki235juki235

Taourirt Kasbah

There are many desert tour introductions on the streets and hotels in Marrakech, which is very convenient for traveling the next day. At 7:30, we set off for the journey to Ouarzazate, the gateway to the desert. The scenery on both sides of the road gradually changed from wheat fields to wastelands, with clusters of weeds crawling on the ground like moss. Finally, it became a bare hillside. The Atlas Mountains stretch across northwest Africa, separating the southwestern Mediterranean coastal area from the Sahara Desert, winding for 2,400 kilometers. The name of the mountain range is taken from Atlas, the Hercules who supported the sky with his shoulders in ancient Greek mythology. The ancient Greeks named it after this, meaning that this is the westernmost end of the world. From Marrakech to Ouarzazate, you have to cross the Atlas Mountains, and the winding mountain road turns uphill all the way. The old driver drove the car very fast, and arrived at the first stop, Ait ben Haddou, at nearly twelve o'clock. This Kasabahs (castle) was a pass established by the Berbers four hundred years ago to control the golden salt trade route from South Africa (black Africa south of the Sahara Desert) to Venice. The castle is built on a hill by the river, controlling the valley below. It was originally abandoned. It was rediscovered by European tourists in the 1960s and was named a World Heritage Site in 1987. Director Spiegel and others have filmed movies here, such as "Lawrence of Arabia" and "Gladiator", which made this increasingly forgotten village famous, and hundreds of thousands of tourists come here every year. Ait ben Haddou is also ranked second in the list of popular locations for "Game of Thrones". There are only eight households in the castle now, and most of the houses have collapsed, with no signs of their former glory. They rely on some new houses built during the filming to support the scene. The village built on the hillside is staggered and quite imposing. The outline is like Manhattan in New York and Lujiazui in Shanghai. The construction of the houses here is the same as the dry-rammed earth in China. First, straw and clay are rammed into large bricks and piled up to form walls. Then, beams made of palm trunks and rafters made of reeds are laid on top, and finally, clay and limestone roofs (Lime Chalk) are laid. In the hot desert, the thick walls separate the heat outside. Walking in the corridor, there is a cool breeze.
