Stay in an aesthetic experiment composed of yellow, copper, and seawater

The day I went to Cheval Blanc Randheli in the Maldives, my dhoni crossed a lagoon so clear it was unbelievable. From afar, I saw a massive copper arch standing in the middle of the water, like an abstract brushstroke emerging from the sea. I later learned it was a work by artist Vincent Beaurin, aptly named "Arch." The hotel uses this piece as a visual anchor, and it has become the first impression for many who visit. Design: Yellow is the theme here Jean-Michel Gathy used local Maldivian materials like rattan, bamboo, and mother-of-pearl to turn the villas into residential-style spaces. The most vibrant color in the room is a bright yellow—not a harsh yellow, but one that looks like sunlight hitting the lagoon. You can see it on the throw pillows, napkins, and amenity packaging. This is the aesthetic language of Cheval Blanc Randheli; it's very cohesive and highly photogenic. The villa I stayed in had a large private water area, and I could go snorkeling directly from the living room. My butler suggested I go into the water in the morning, saying the fish are most active then. I followed the advice and, sure enough, encountered a school of small blue fish circling the coral. Spa: Take a dhoni to an island dedicated to treatments The spa island is not far from the main island, but you have to take a dedicated dhoni to get there. The six spa villas are independent, with only white gauze curtains hanging on the side facing the sea. Guerlain fragrances and skincare products are the stars here. I had a deep-tissue massage; the products had a subtle scent and were easily absorbed. After the treatment, you can enjoy tea on the spa villa's private terrace. The tea set is delicate, and as the wind blows, the white curtains flutter, making time seem to stretch out. They also offer Guerlain makeup services, which are perfect for guests attending an evening banquet on the island. Dining: Lobster, Japanese cuisine, and breakfast by the sea The main restaurant serves excellent surf and turf, and the lobster is particularly well-prepared. The Japanese restaurant, Omakase, requires advance booking; the sushi chef comes from Tokyo and has very precise techniques. You can choose to have breakfast in your room, and the kitchen will deliver a Maldivian-style breakfast in a wooden box to your terrace. I ate a plate of crab meat stir-fried with local chili served with flatbread by the pool, and it really hit the spot. In the evenings, they sometimes invite a band to perform on the beach—not a lively beach party, but more like a quiet seaside concert. Surroundings and activities The Maldives itself isn't really a destination for "exploring the surroundings," but the hotel offers plenty of activities. Sunrise yoga is held on a platform extending into the sea, and the instructor has a very gentle voice. The snorkeling instructor will take you to see sea turtles and reef sharks; although the water isn't deep, there is a huge amount of marine life. At dusk, you can take a traditional dhoni out to sea, where dolphins will chase the boat. The hotel also has its own tennis court, and playing a match on the island is quite a unique experience. It takes about 40 minutes by speedboat from Malé International Airport to the hotel, and the hotel will confirm your flight time in advance. The Maldives is warm year-round, with the driest period from November to April. Lagoon villas are better for snorkeling enthusiasts, while the sunset side is perfect for watching the sunset. The spa island must be booked in advance, as it only hosts a limited number of people per day. Dining on the island consists mainly of Western and Asian cuisine. If you are traveling with children, you can communicate with the hotel in advance regarding a children's menu.

A Perfect Stay at The St. Regis Maldives

We arrived at The St. Regis Maldives after spending five days at the W Maldives. Bad weather delayed our seaplane connection in Malé, but the St. Regis lounge team made sure we were comfortable and kept us informed while we waited. The arrival process was an adventure. Though the flight was supposed to last 30 minutes, bad weather forced us to circle above the resort before diverting to a nearby atoll. A St. Regis boat picked us up at an offshore platform, and despite rough seas, the crew handled the transfer smoothly, professionally, and calmly—a reassuring start to our stay. Upon reaching the resort’s jetty, we were greeted by our butler, Sinah. To say Sinah was magical would not be an exaggeration. He was always there when we needed him yet never intrusive, anticipating our needs with an almost uncanny accuracy. He quickly took us to our stunning Sunrise Overwater St. Regis Suite 508. The suite was spacious, beautifully designed, and offered breathtaking sunrise views, tailor-made for us. My Marriott Ambassador status was thoughtfully acknowledged throughout the entire resort, not just at check-in but through consistently attentive and personalized service. Our first dinner at T•Pan was unforgettable. We had the restaurant to ourselves, where Chef Sabin curated an amazing menu while Yeni provided impeccable service. It was a clear sign that we had arrived at a very special place. That evening, we also met Yevgeni, the Food and Beverage Manager. Over the next ten days, he was a constant presence at every dining venue, personally engaging with guests to ensure every experience was exceptional. Being avid snorkelers, we were excited to explore the house reef, which required a modest swim to its edge but was well worth the effort. Visibility often exceeded 20 meters, and the marine life was spectacular. We encountered blacktip and whitetip reef sharks, turtles, moray eels, groupers, schools of snapper, and even a bustling cleaning station. The quality of this reef rivaled some of the best we’ve visited. A private atoll snorkeling trip was equally remarkable, but the resort’s own reef could easily compete. Other activities included a private sunset reef-fishing trip, and my wife went on two dives with Iris from the dive center. The professionalism, safety standards, and equipment were top-notch. We also enjoyed a private dinner with wine pairing at Decanter, which offered an extraordinary experience among a wine collection valued at $3 million. Sommelier Jiju was exceptional, pairing each dish while explaining the wines with ease and expertise. Any unfinished wine was seamlessly delivered to our next dining spot. Breakfasts at ALBA were a delightful way to start each day with a fantastic buffet and personalized service, like the staff remembering our coffee orders. Yeni seemed to be everywhere, ensuring a warm and attentive experience. Our two dinners at ALBA—one à la carte and one featuring the fish we had caught during our fishing trip—were equally splendid. Initially booked for five nights, we ended up extending our stay by another five because we simply didn’t want to leave. Sinah worked his magic yet again, maintaining continuity in our villa and effortlessly rearranging our flights. Few things speak louder for a resort’s quality than extending your stay while you’re there. We treated ourselves to two spa visits for various treatments and a session at the Blue Hole hydrotherapy experience. The treatments were world-class, and the serene setting added to the charm. During our final days, as the weather improved, we made the most of snorkeling straight from our villa, enjoying hours by the reef before relaxing at ALBA Beach Bar with refreshing cocktails and pizza. Anoof took amazing care of us, ever attentive and thoughtful. The St. Regis sunset sabrage at The Whale Bar was unparalleled. The ceremony, storytelling, team pride, and the stunning setting made it an unforgettable event. The tapas and the unique Island Mary cocktail added to the magic. Dining at Orientale was another highlight, with the pre-ordered Peking duck being a standout. Yeni and Yevgeni provided warm farewells, along with other team members who wished us a safe journey home. Could we fault anything? Absolutely not. This was one of the best resort experiences we’ve ever had. Special mention must go to Sinah, whom we will henceforth remember as the “St. Regis Genie.” He and the entire butler team epitomized warmth, discretion, and unparalleled service. Our top recommendations are trying T•Pan, Decanter, and the spa. As for accommodations, any of the overwater villas would be outstanding, but we personally loved the Sunrise side with our St. Regis Suite upgrade. We came for five nights but left after ten, already dreaming of our next visit. Recommended: 100 out of 10.
