Dig an undervalued treasure land at touching prices — traveler post in Hejin

Dig an undervalued treasure land at touching prices

2-hour high-speed rail hidden gems | Avoid crowds, low prices, slow pace Popular summer attractions are packed with people, with 2-hour queues for 30 minutes of fun, and per-person spending often reaching thousands. In fact, within a 2-hour high-speed rail commute, there are 8 little-known hidden gem towns. They offer both the wild charm of the Northwest and decades-old pristine ancient towns, with few tourists, affordable food, and accommodation. This guide will cover the best travel seasons, itineraries, and tips to avoid pitfalls. I. Northwest wild charm 1. Tianshui, Gansu | Grottoes for summer escape in Longshang Direct high-speed rail from Xi'an in 1.5–2 hours. Best for summer escape from June to September, with an average mountain temperature of 24℃. Visit the Maijishan Grottoes without the crowds of Dunhuang; the cliff sculptures create an immersive atmosphere. The free Tianshui Ancient City is adorned with lanterns in the evening, where local elders drink tea and watch shadow puppets, with almost no sales pitches. The cool stream in Houchuan Village in the suburbs is perfect for families to wade in. ✅ Tip to avoid pitfalls: Don't eat at the grotto entrance. You can find local specialty "guagua" for CNY 5 at old town snack stalls. Take a bus directly to the scenic area; no need for expensive one-day tours. 2. Zhongwei, Ningxia | Yellow River Gobi Oasis Accessible by high-speed rail from Yinchuan in 1 hour and Xi'an in 2 hours. Recommended for travel in May–June and September–October, avoiding the peak summer heat. The free Gobi Highway No. 66 offers views of the Gobi, sand dunes, and the Yellow River in one frame, with no crowds for morning photos. Beichangtan, a century-old loess ancient village, is pristine and non-commercialized. The Gaomiao Baoan Temple, which combines three religions, is serene and quiet. ✅ Tip to avoid pitfalls: Don't book desert experiences at the scenic area entrance. City stores offer prices that are 30% cheaper. You can eat your fill at the night market for CNY 20 per person. 3. Linxia, Gansu | Hui-style ancient city 1-hour high-speed rail from Lanzhou. The climate is cool in July–August, and the night market is most vibrant. The Eight-Square Thirteen-Lane area features continuous Hui-style brick-carved courtyards, where silver ornaments and cold noodle stalls are part of locals' daily consumption. At Liujiaxia Reservoir, you can see the two colors of the Yellow River converge, offering expansive views. Hand-grabbed lamb and Hezho-style buns are extremely cost-effective, with a single person's main meal costing less than CNY 40. ✅ Tip to avoid pitfalls: Souvenirs at scenic areas are overpriced. It's more cost-effective to buy dried goods and ingredients at the old town's wet market. II. Retro slow-paced ancient towns 4. Hancheng, Shaanxi | Millennium Ming and Qing ancient city Only 30 minutes by high-speed rail from Xi'an. Spring and autumn offer the best travel experience. It perfectly preserves its flagstone streets from the Ming and Qing dynasties. The Confucius Temple and City God Temple are free to enter. In the morning, the streets are filled with local residents buying groceries, with no mass-produced internet-famous shops. Dangjia Village's ancient residences are directly accessible by bus for CNY 2, and its brick and wood carvings are well-preserved. ✅ Tip to avoid pitfalls: A two-day trip for one person is sufficient with CNY 300. Hundred-yuan guesthouses are clean and comfortable. Negotiate the price in advance for a chartered car to visit Hekou Longmen. 5. Zhenjiang, Jiangsu | Serene Jiangnan ancient city 20 minutes by high-speed rail from Nanjing, 1 hour 10 minutes from Shanghai. Best for travel in March–May and October–November. Xijindu, a millennium-old alley, is almost deserted in the early morning and evening, allowing you to avoid the crowds of popular Jiangnan ancient towns. Jinshan Temple and Beigu Mountain stand by the river, rich in cultural atmosphere. A bowl of "Guogai Mian" for a dozen yuan is a daily breakfast for locals. ✅ Tip to avoid pitfalls: Cultural and creative shops in the ancient street are severely overpriced. Choose old street-side restaurants for meals. 6. Songyang, Zhejiang | Pristine ancient village secret 2 hours by high-speed rail from Shanghai. The terraced landscapes are stunning in April–May and October–November. The golden rammed earth houses of Yangjiatang are perfect for sunset photos, and the entire area is free. The Ming and Qing old street retains blacksmith shops and old-fashioned pastry workshops, without noisy internet-famous stores. Round-trip high-speed rail tickets are just over CNY 100, and a two-day trip is all-inclusive for CNY 500 per person. ✅ Tip to avoid pitfalls: Drinks at the cliffside bookstore are expensive. Bring your own water bottle when entering the mountains. III. Cool mountain and water retreats 7. Guidong, Hunan | Alpine meadow town 2 hours by high-speed rail from Changsha. First choice for summer escape in July–August, with an average summer temperature of 22℃. The gentle meadows of Wanyang Mountain offer expansive views with few tourists. Longxi Waterfall's shallow beach is shaded by dense trees, perfect for free wading and cooling off. You can buy original ecological local produce from farmers at the township market. ✅ Tip to avoid pitfalls: The temperature difference between day and night on the mountain is significant, so be sure to bring a light jacket. Do not buy drinking water at the small shop on the mountaintop. 8. Taining, Fujian | Green water and Danxia landform town 1.5 hours by high-speed rail from Fuzhou, 2.5 hours from Xiamen. The mountains and rivers are abundant with water from June to October. Shangshu Alley, a Ming and Qing ancient street, is mainly inhabited by locals, with a strong lantern atmosphere in the evening. Rafting on Shangqing Stream avoids the crowds of Dajin Lake; the water is clear, and the boatmen's folk songs are full of rustic charm. Ancient city guesthouses start from CNY 80. ✅ Tip to avoid pitfalls: Purchase raft tickets online in advance, as prices are higher at the on-site window. General travel tips to avoid pitfalls Choose guesthouses in the old town, away from scenic area hotels, for a 40% price reduction and authentic local snacks right outside your door. Don't buy local specialties in scenic areas; old town wet markets and local old shops offer better value. Prioritize weekday travel; tourist numbers double on weekends. For short trips, it's recommended to depart on Friday evening and return on Sunday. Northwest destinations have large temperature differences between day and night, so bring a light jacket even in mid-summer. For southern mountain and water areas, prepare non-slip slippers and sun protection. Refuse low-cost shopping tours. Buses and taxis in all small towns can reach core attractions directly, offering a better independent travel experience.

Driving or hiring a car is the most convenient way to travel between attractions. · Clothing: Both Wangxian Grand Canyon and Shunwangping require walking, so wear comfortable, non-slip athletic shoes. There is a large temperature difference between day and night in the mountains, so bring a light jacket; the temperature at the summit feels like just over 20°C. · Best season: Summer and autumn are the most comfortable. The average temperature in summer is 21°C, making it an excellent summer retreat. In autumn, the forests are ablaze with color, and the scenery along the Yellow River No. 1 Tourist Highway is beautiful. · Special reminder: Wangxian Grand Canyon stops entry at 4:30 PM, so it is recommended to visit in the morning. A 3-day itinerary for Yonghe County

A budget of CNY 1,500 is plenty for a 3-day trip starting from Yonghe. Yonghe is the core area of the Yellow River Meander National Geopark. Admission to key attractions like Qiankun Bay, the Red Army Eastward Expedition Memorial Hall, and the Yonghe Confucian Temple is very low or free, and local costs are affordable. We recommend using Yonghe County town as your base. Spend the first day exploring the Yellow River Qiankun Bay, the second day on the red history route and terraced fields, and the third day for a relaxed return. 🗓️ 3-Day Itinerary Suggestion Day 1: Yellow River Meander and the First Bay under Heaven Depart from Yonghe County town in the morning for the Yellow River Qiankun Bay Scenic Area. This is the core of the Yellow River Meander National Geopark. Viewed from the air, it resembles a Taiji symbol and is known as the "First Yellow River Bay under Heaven." The reference ticket price is CNY 40 per person, with discounts for students and seniors over 60, and free admission for children under 1.2m. We recommend booking online in advance, as you can sometimes save a few dollars. Summer opening hours are 8:30 AM–6:00 PM, and winter hours are 9:00 AM–5:30 PM, with ticket sales stopping at 5:30 PM. The main highlight is Qiankun Terrace. Standing on the edge of the viewing platform, you can overlook the 320-degree S-shaped bend of the Yellow River. The contours are clearest at sunrise and sunset, making every photo look like a wallpaper. The Yellow River Meander National Geopark Museum inside the scenic area is free to visit; you can view the models and videos to understand how the meander landform was formed before seeing the real thing for a deeper experience. The Yellow River No. 1 Tourist Highway "0km" marker cultural station is also a new popular photo spot, where the white landmark building against the Yellow River backdrop makes for great photos. Have lunch near the scenic area or back in town and try the Yonghe jujube lamb. Yonghe integrates sheep farming with the jujube industry; the sheep are fed with varying proportions of jujube powder during their growth, resulting in tender meat with a natural jujube aroma. Stewed lamb chops, lamb dumplings, and spicy stir-fried lamb blood are local specialties. In the afternoon, you can continue walking along the Xianren Bay boardwalk. This wooden boardwalk built along the Yellow River allows you to get close to the river water, with the canyon beneath your feet and river views by your side—a very comfortable hiking experience. Return to the county town in the evening for your stay. Day 2: Red Memories and Loess Terraces In the morning, visit the Red Army Eastward Expedition Memorial Hall. The memorial hall is located in Dongzheng Village, Gedi Township, and is open for free from 9:00 AM–5:00 PM. It houses over 1,000 artifacts and provides a complete record of the Red Army's eastward expedition; Mao Zedong once stayed here. Please remain solemn during your visit; we recommend setting aside 1.5–2 hours. For lunch, have "Ca Kedou" (tadpole noodles) in Gedi Township or back in the county town. This is the most representative pasta dish in Yonghe. The dough is pressed into boiling water using a special "grating bed," resulting in a shape resembling tadpoles. It is smooth and chewy, and delicious whether served with gravy or stir-fried with vegetables. In the afternoon, go see the Yonghe Terraces. With 67,300 mu, they are the largest dry-farming terraces in the north and the best-preserved terrace group on the Loess Plateau, known as "Southern Yuanyang, Northern Yonghe." The terraces are distributed along the Yellow River No. 1 Tourist Highway and can be seen while driving. They layer from the foot of the mountain to the top, with curves like the fingerprints of the earth—truly magnificent. Afterward, return to the county town and visit the Dacheng Hall of the Yonghe Confucian Temple. This is the only "National Key Cultural Relic Protection Unit" in Yonghe. It is a Yuan Dynasty structure, and its column-reduction and column-shifting construction methods are very distinctive. Admission is free. The main hall door is usually closed, but you can view the exterior. Stay in the county town at night and try Yonghe Minjian, another local specialty noodle dish. It is finer and shorter than Ca Kedou and is very appetizing when served with a sour and spicy gravy. Day 3: Relaxed Return or a Side Trip to Xiaoxitian in Xi County If you are returning the same day, you can buy some Yonghe jujubes as souvenirs in the county town in the morning before setting off. If you have plenty of time and are driving, consider a side trip to Xiaoxitian in Xi County. It is about 64km from Dongzheng Village in Gedi Township, Yonghe, to Xi County, and Xiaoxitian is about 23km from the Xi County town, a drive of about 2 hours. Xiaoxitian is a filming location for *Black Myth: Wukong* and is known as the "Museum of Chinese Hanging Sculptures." Tickets are about CNY 35. Visiting Xiaoxitian before returning will make your 3-day trip fuller, but you need to manage your time well. 💰 Budget Breakdown (Total approx. CNY 1,000–1,300) · Local transport (approx. CNY 150–250): Yonghe attractions are scattered. Qiankun Bay is about a 40-minute drive from the county town; driving or chartering a car is most convenient. Chartering a car costs about CNY 200–300 per day, which can be shared. · Accommodation (approx. CNY 240): Economy hotels in Yonghe County town cost about CNY 100–120/night. CNY 40–80): Qiankun Bay is about CNY 40 (discounts for students and seniors); Red Army Eastward Expedition Memorial Hall is free; Yonghe Confucian Temple is free; the terraces and views along the Yellow River No. 1 Tourist Highway are free. If you visit Xiaoxitian, add CNY 35. · Dining (approx. CNY 300): Yonghe prices are affordable. CNY 200): For souvenir purchases and incidental expenses. 🍜 Local Specialties · Yonghe Jujube Lamb: The most representative delicacy in Yonghe. The dough is pressed into boiling water using a "grating bed," resulting in a shape resembling tadpoles. It is smooth and chewy and is often used by the county hotel to entertain guests. · Yonghe Minjian: A noodle dish that is finer and shorter than Ca Kedou. Served with sour and spicy gravy or stir-fried with vegetables, it is a daily staple for locals. · Yonghe Jujubes: Yonghe is a jujube production area. The local jujubes are thick-fleshed and sweet, and you can buy them as souvenirs. 💡 Practical Tips · Transport: There is no high-speed railway station in Yonghe; you need to transfer via Linfen. Attractions are scattered along the Yellow River No. 1 Tourist Highway; driving is most convenient. If not driving, you can carpool from the county town to Qiankun Bay; we recommend booking your return vehicle in advance. · Clothing: You will need to walk along the Qiankun Bay boardwalk and the terraces, so wear non-slip, comfortable sports shoes. It is windy by the Yellow River, so bring a windbreaker. · Best Season: Summer and autumn are the most comfortable. In summer, the Yellow River has a large water volume, and Qiankun Bay is at its most magnificent; in autumn, the terraces have rich color layers, and the weather is clear and crisp. · Special Reminder: Ticket sales for Qiankun Bay stop at 5:30 PM; we recommend entering the park in the morning or early afternoon. Please remain solemn when visiting the Red Army Eastward Expedition Memorial Hall and respect the red history site. Some cultural relic protection units have rest periods at noon, so please plan accordingly to avoid them. Starting from Yonghe, three days is just enough to connect the Yellow River meander, red history, and loess terraces. It is a solid, short trip to western Shanxi that doesn't cost much and offers a real experience~

Travel guide for Qiufeng Tower at Houtu Temple, Wanrong — traveler post in Hejin

Travel guide for Qiufeng Tower at Houtu Temple, Wanrong

❤Recommended reasons: Qiufeng Tower is the core structure and landmark of Houtu Temple in Wanrong. In 113 BC (the fourth year of the Yuanding era of the Western Han Dynasty), Emperor Wu of Han, Liu Che, offered sacrifices to Houtu here, sailed on the Fen River, and wrote the timeless masterpiece "Qiufeng Ci." Later generations built the tower to house the stele, hence the name Qiufeng Tower. Due to Yellow River flooding, it was destroyed and rebuilt many times throughout history. The current structure was rebuilt in 1870 (the ninth year of the Tongzhi reign of the Qing Dynasty). The entire building uses mortise and tenon construction. The cross-shaped hip-and-gable roof features 36 upturned eaves resembling birds spreading their wings, with wind chimes hanging from the corners. Each corner features a warrior figure, totaling 108, and 28 hanging pillars correspond to the "28 Generals of Yuntai" of Emperor Wu of Han. The column heads and bodies feature exquisite wood carvings. The second and third floors each contain a "Qiufeng Ci" stele. The second floor houses a seal script stele from the Qing Dynasty's Tongzhi reign (intaglio), and the third floor houses a running-cursive script stele from the Yuan Dynasty (relief). 💰Admission: CNY 20 📆Tour route: After entering the mountain gate, climb a flight of stairs to reach the Houtu Temple courtyard, also known as "Yijing Kantai." Then, visit the Houtu Niangniang Main Hall, which features exquisite wood carvings. Past the main hall is Qiufeng Tower. Currently, you can only visit up to the second floor of Qiufeng Tower. You can view the Yellow River from here. After going downstairs, turn left, pass under Qiufeng Tower, and head to the right side of the tower (this leads to the exit). 🚉Parking: Located right next to the mountain gate. Do not go to the innermost parking lot, as that is the work area (ticket office). Parking is free. 👍Nearby attractions: 1. Li Family Courtyard in Yuncheng (admission CNY 60), 27 km away, 35-minute drive. 2. Ruan Family Twin Stele Tower in Hejin, 13 km away, 20-minute drive. 📌Tips: At the foot of the mountain, local farmers sell very sweet plums for CNY 10 per 3 jin

Back from Hejin, and I have to recommend it to everyone. — traveler post in Hejin

Back from Hejin, and I have to recommend it to everyone.

The Yellow River surges through Longmen, and this small city holds centuries of history. Embarking on a solo trip to Hejin, I took in the grandeur of the great river while soaking up the local atmosphere, enjoying a relaxing and healing getaway🌊 📅Itinerary Day 1: Head to the Yellow River and visit the spectacular Longmen scenery🌄 Arrive in Hejin in the morning, check in to your hotel in the city, and after a short rest, head to the Yellow River Datijiya (Ladder Cliff). This is a cliffside ladder dating back to the Northern Wei Dynasty, with 365 stone steps carved into the sheer cliff face. Climb slowly to face the surging Yellow River canyon head-on. If you have limited energy, you can also choose the sightseeing elevator to go up the mountain and easily enjoy the landscape. Have a simple lunch nearby, try some local noodles, and recharge. In the afternoon, head to the Yellow River Longmen Scenic Area (Yumenkou). This is the birthplace of the "Carp Leaping over the Dragon Gate" legend. The Yellow River narrows suddenly here. Standing on the bridge, experience the grandeur of crossing between Shanxi and Shaanxi provinces in one step, and watch the rushing river break through the stone gate—it's a truly breathtaking sight. Wait for the sunset by the Yellow River in the evening; the afterglow of the setting sun spreads across the river, creating a perfect atmosphere. Return to Hejin city in the evening to try the local specialty, lamb hubu (lamb soup with shredded pancakes). It's warm, satisfying, and the perfect way to end the first day. Day 2: Explore ancient architecture and understand the thousand-year history🏛️ In the morning, head to Zhenwu Temple (Jiulong Temple). The Taoist temple is situated on nine mountain peaks with well-arranged halls. Climbing up offers a view of the Fen River intertwined with the city. Come here at sunset for an especially moving view. For lunch, find food in the old town alleys. Try the fried oil cakes and handmade cat ear noodles to experience authentic southern Shanxi flavors. In the afternoon, visit the Fancun Xuandi Temple. It's a simple, ancient Ming Dynasty structure without excessive commercialization. You can see locals chatting at the temple entrance, where daily life blends with ancient charm, allowing you to immerse yourself in Hejin's rich historical heritage. Stroll through the old town alleys in the evening, visit the local night market, eat street food, and experience the slow-paced nightlife of the small city. Day 3: A leisurely stroll through the city to wrap up the trip🛍️ No need to rush in the morning; sleep in. Go for a stroll at Taitou Temple. This Yuan Dynasty structure has no walls, and locals come here to cool off and chat. The ancient architecture blends into daily life, making it quiet and healing. You can also wander through the old streets, soak up the local atmosphere, and pick up local specialties like millet, red dates, and other items as souvenirs. Have an authentic Hejin lunch and savor the food you've been wanting to try one last time. 💡Travel tips 🚶‍♀️Be sure to wear non-slip, comfortable shoes. The steps at Ladder Cliff are steep, and walking for a long time can be tiring. 🌬️It is very windy along the Yellow River, so it is recommended to carry a windbreaker regardless of the season. ☀️Take sun protection measures for outdoor activities. Bring a hat and sunscreen to avoid prolonged sun exposure. 🚌Hejin has free tourist buses that go directly to some scenic spots. Taxis within the city are affordable, making travel quite convenient. 🍜To eat at local long-standing restaurants, try to avoid peak dining hours to reduce wait times. 🙏When visiting temples and ancient buildings, please follow the rules of the venue and respect local customs and culture. 🎒Climbing Ladder Cliff is physically demanding, so carry drinking water with you as there are few supply points on the mountain. 📍Hejin does not have a high-speed railway station. You need to arrive in Yuncheng first and then transfer. Plan your transportation route in advance.

Great Ladder Cliff of The Yellow River

Climb the ladder up, take the elevator down. Definitely don't take the elevator up and go down the stairs! Your legs will go weak! Climbing the ladder isn't as difficult as you might imagine, but you've only climbed about a third of the way; you have to keep going to reach the top. It's worth it! By the way, the prices in the scenic area are very reasonable; items at the top are only one yuan more expensive than usual, which is perfectly acceptable. Also, the scenic area's special performances are really good; the people performing so gracefully at such a height are truly admirable.

Yellow River Longmen Scenic Area

The Yellow River Longmen Ancient Ferry Scenic Area is located in Hancheng. Two Longmen Mountains stand tall, with a river flowing out of them. The upper part is a hundred steps wide, and the lower part is a thousand miles long, like a gate that only a dragon can cross, hence the name Longmen. Standing on the top of the mountain and overlooking the Yellow River, the panoramic view looks like a silver dragon spitting water. It is said that Longmen was carved by Dayu for flood control. The canyon from Hukou to Longmen has spectacular waves and northern scenery. There are wonderful myths and legends circulating here. The most famous one is "Carp Jumping over Dragon Gate", which is a household name.

宝树堂宝树堂

Wanrong Feiyun Tower Scenic Area

Wanrong Feiyun Tower, hailed as the No. 1 wooden tower in China, is a pinnacle of ancient Chinese wooden architecture. The entire tower is constructed entirely of wood, without a single iron nail, relying solely on mortise and tenon joints for connection – a testament to its ingenious design. While appearing to have three stories, it actually contains five, with four colossal pillars extending from the ground floor to the roof, supported by 32 auxiliary pillars forming a stable framework. Beneath the eaves are 345 sets of uniquely shaped brackets, layered like clusters of clouds, both sharing the load and possessing aesthetic appeal. Thirty-two upturned eaves gracefully extend into the air, their chimes ringing in the wind. Standing below and looking up, the orderly arrangement of the wooden components, standing firm through centuries of wind and rain, fully demonstrates the superb construction skills of ancient craftsmen, making it a must-see wooden architectural marvel in Shanxi.

Wanrong Jiwang Temple

The temple is dedicated to Houji, the god who taught people agriculture. The main hall has a hip roof, with dougong brackets and a hall-style beam frame. Because it does not have a continuous beam, the locals call it the "Beamless Hall." In 2011, when the School of Archaeology and Museology of Peking University surveyed the main hall, they found traces of ink writing "Tiansheng First Year" (1023) on the outer surface of the beam in the lower part of the front eaves. Based on the structure, they determined that it was a building from the Northern Song Dynasty. A stone tablet on the east wall records that in the eighth year of Zhiyuan (1271) of the Yuan Dynasty, the Jiwang Temple "built a dance hall." In front of the hall is an iron bell from the fourth year of Xuanhe (1122) of the Northern Song Dynasty, which was originally from the Puzhao Temple in the area.

It is worth a visit. When I went there, the scenic spot was preparing for the Spring Festival activities. It looked pretty good. The more than 3,000-meter tunnel was so shocking. You can't imagine the shocking power. The staff were also very enthusiastic! ! Like

Many courtyard house complexes are nestled in quiet valleys, each building possessing its own unique character. After 6 PM, the staff at the entrances leave, allowing pedestrians free access. Wenxing Pavilion, Qianlou, and Kanjialou are all quite nice. As for Sichuan pepper yogurt, it's best to try it in Hancheng Ancient City; it's available everywhere.

Macun Brick Carving Tombs

The brick-carved tomb in Macun is the best brick-carved tomb I've ever visited. It has a very mysterious feel to it, and some people might not dare to go down alone. But once you go down, you can understand the ancients' vision of what their afterlife would be like. The area inside is relatively narrow, so only a large number of people can go down at a time.

Zhenwu Temple

Quanzhou Zhenwu Temple was an official site for worshipping the sea god during the Song and Yuan dynasties, and an important testament to "Quanzhou: the World's Maritime Trade Center of Song and Yuan China." The temple, nestled against the mountain and facing the sea, features existing buildings in the Ming and Qing styles. It primarily enshrines Zhenwu the Great and is a protected cultural relic of Fujian Province. This place is not only a physical testament to the Maritime Silk Road trade but also the ancestral temple of the Xuanwu Emperor faith in Fujian and Taiwan. Today, with its serene and ancient atmosphere, it stands as a unique historical and cultural landmark of Quanzhou.

Qinglong Temple

If I were to make a recommendation, I would definitely recommend you to visit the Qinglong Temple in Yuncheng. Although this temple is not as well-known as other temples, the sculptures and towers inside are worth seeing. This is also a more recommended attraction in the northern part of Yuncheng.
