Old Mint Street

Old Mint Street, located in Valletta's Old Town, is a steep street offering views of the sea and distant church domes. The houses on both sides are built of tan limestone, some walls covered in vines, and stained-glass windows gleaming in the sunlight. The street is narrow, with little traffic, perfect for a leisurely stroll, where you might occasionally encounter locals chatting on the steps. In the evening, the slanting sunlight casts long shadows, making the street feel quiet. A little further up, the outline of Castel Saint-Elmo comes into view.

Blue Grotto

The Blue Grotto, located on the south coast of Malta's main island, is a sea cave carved into limestone cliffs. A small boat passes through the narrow opening, where sunlight streams in through gaps above the water, turning the seawater a deep blue-green. The boatman will moor the boat deep inside the cave, allowing you to see the outlines of the underwater rocks. When the waves are high outside, the boat will rise and fall with the surge. This tour is relatively short, lasting about ten minutes, but on a clear day, you can truly see the rare colors. The tour duration is greatly affected by sea conditions, so it's recommended to inquire about boat availability in advance.

Upper Barrakka

Upper Barrakka Gardens sits atop Valletta's city walls, offering views of the three ancient cities across the harbor. The row of arches in the center of the garden is a popular spot for photos, through which you can see yachts and ferries moored in the harbor. Daily cannon salutes are held at noon and in the afternoon, their sound echoing throughout the harbor. Benches are situated under the shade of the trees in the garden, where locals enjoy sitting to read newspapers or chat. A sloping elevator leads down from the garden to the waterfront.

Grand Master's Palace

The Royal Palace of Malta is located in the heart of Valletta. The greyish-white limestone building has a modest exterior, but the interior is quite impressive. The Neptune Courtyard at the entrance is a typical Mediterranean style, and its galleries are photogenic. The most worthwhile exhibit is the Armory, which houses over 5,000 pieces of medieval knightly armor and weapons, displayed in the original hall, allowing visitors to imagine the life of the knightly order. Some rooms contain murals depicting the Great Siege of Malta in 1565. It reopened after restoration in 2024; adult tickets cost approximately €12.

Fort St Angelo

Fort Saint-Angelo sits atop a promontory in Birgu, its greyish-yellow limestone walls roughened by the sea winds. Inside, the castle retains its former gun emplacements and stone-paved passageways. From the higher points of the walls, one can see the Valletta skyline and the military camp opposite. Guides will recount the history of the 1565 siege, describing the details of starvation and firearms in a detached tone. There's a small chapel in the castle; most of the frescoes have peeled away, with only the image of the Virgin Mary remaining clear. The sea breeze, carrying the salty and rusty smell, pours in through the arched windows. Overall, it's a place worth spending half a day exploring, suitable for those interested in military history.

Popeye Village

Popeye Village, located near Meliha, is a set left over from the movie's filming. Colorful wooden houses are crammed together along the fjord, their windows painted with cartoon characters. Actors dressed as Popeye and Olive Oyl perform regular fight scenes and spinach-eating antics; the performances are rather exaggerated and suitable for children. You can take a small boat ride around the fjord; the water is so clear you can see the rocks at the bottom. A small shop sells souvenirs and canned spinach with Popeye designs on the packaging. The overall atmosphere is relaxed, but the place isn't very big; you can see everything in about two hours.
