Aershan National Forest Park

Aershan National Forest Park

7.9
4.3/5
6.8k reviews
Aershan National Forest Park is hidden deep in the forested mountains of the southwestern Greater Khingan Range, known for its volcanic landforms, lakes, and forests. Ancient volcanic eruptions left behind a series of geological views here: craters filled with water to form lakes, lava-blocked river channels creating dammed lakes, vast stone beaches paved with black basalt, and deep canyons carved by fractured lava belts. The Halaha River meanders through the park, with over 80% of its area covered by forests dominated by Daurian larch and birch trees. Shitanglin is a highly recognizable stop: on the black lava beach with almost no soil, larch trees root into rock crevices, and moss and lichens cover the stone surface, like walking into a natural volcanic geological museum. Tuofengling Heavenly Lake requires climbing a flight of stairs along a boardwalk; reaching the summit allows you to overlook this crater lake with a water surface elevation of nearly 1300 m, its overall outline resembling a crouching camel. Arxan Heavenly Lake, on the other hand, has no visible rivers flowing in or out, and its water level shows no obvious fluctuations throughout the year. The Halaha River rushes through the chaotic rocks of Santan Gorge, connecting three deep pools: Woniu Pool, Hushi Pool, and Yuexin Pool. Azalea Lake is named for the Xing'an azaleas that bloom along its shores in mid-to-late May each year; if you catch it while the lingering snow has not yet melted, the red flowers against the white snow offer a unique scene. The Chai River originates in the Grand Canyon area within the park, where black volcanic rocks are scattered across the valley floor; the stream winds through them, and you can walk down the wooden boardwalk in the forest to take a closer look. Seasonally, from mid to late September, birch trees and larches gradually turn golden, creating the most vibrant colors in the attraction. In winter, the unfrozen section of the Halaha River remains ice-free, with frost-covered trees lining its banks and herds of cattle often drinking from the river at dawn. The attractions are distributed along a single road with driving distances between them, making self-drive or private charter tours more convenient. Both Tianchi Lake and Tuofengling Tianchi require climbing steps, so comfortable shoes are recommended. The forest area experiences significant temperature variations between morning and evening, so bringing a jacket is advisable even during summer and fall visits.China · Arxan

The Hill

The Hill is a cultural, commercial, and tourism complex located in the Hongqi Street business district of Changchun. Its uniqueness lies in bringing a mountain indoors: upon entering, you are greeted by mountain-shaped architecture, with the main mountain path spiraling upward. Stone steps, alleys, courtyards, quaint plaques, and rocks are scattered throughout, accompanied by lush greenery, the sound of water, and birdsong, allowing you to experience the fun of mountain climbing without leaving the city. The entire mountain is enclosed indoors, so even in the cold Northeast winters, the mountain remains green, and you can visit as usual during rain or snow. Walking up the mountain path, you will find craft shops, bookstores, teahouses, general stores, and creative boutiques scattered along the way, while snack streets, cinemas, and theaters are also hidden within the mountain; the Wencham Pavilion at the highest point is the core view for overlooking the entire mountain, while the Wangshan Pavilion at the end of the route is perfect for a rest, offering a panoramic view of the mountainside. The spacious cave hall can host markets, exhibitions, and other events. Strolling here relies entirely on walking up steps, which tests your stamina and can be disorienting, but fortunately, the merchants along the way are happy to help with directions. If you catch immersive performances like the "Mountain Opening Ceremony," flash mobs and costume interactions will make your visit more engaging; after nightfall, the mountain remains brightly lit and bustling, making it a great place for weekend strolls and family-friendly outings, and a great spot to experience the local vibe of Changchun.China · Changchun

Nanhu Parkis located in the southern part of downtown Changchun. Built in 1935 and formerly known as "Huanglong Park," it is a large-scale urban garden in Changchun. The park's green spaces and lake surface are intertwined, with rows of weeping willows along the lakeshore and winding bridges and pavilions dotted throughout, giving it a touch of the charm found in Jiangnan-style gardens. The lake island faces the landmark Four-Pavilion Bridge across the water, and several arched bridges span the lake, serving as the main highlights when strolling around the lake. The park's scenery changes with the seasons: in summer, lotus flowers bloom in patches across the lake, and the "ancient lotus" in the lotus pond area is renowned in Changchun. The Golden Beach by the lake is available for water play and relaxation, and you can go boating in the water recreation area. In the fall, the birch and red-leaf forests are vibrant with color, making it perfect for taking photos and strolling. When the lake freezes over, the vast surface becomes a natural ice rink, bustling with ice skating and the viewing of ice sculptures and lanterns. If you are lucky, you might even encounter local enthusiasts ice-swimming. The park also features amusement facilities, so you can spend a whole day here with children.China · Changchun

Horqin Grassland

Horqin Grassland is not a single enclosed scenic area, but a vast grassland stretching across the eastern part of Inner Mongolia. It mainly covers Tongliao and Hinggan League, bordering Hulunbuir Grassland to the north and Xilin Gol to the west, and is located at the northwest end of the Songliao Plain. "Horqin" comes from the Mongolian language, meaning "archer," and is named after the Horqin tribe that has lived and herded here for generations. This is also the place of birth of Empress Dowager Xiaozhuang of the Qing Dynasty (grandmother of Emperor Kangxi) and the hometown of the national hero Gada Meilin. The Andai dance and Horqin folk songs, which originated in the Hure Banner area, are still sung on the grassland today. Unlike endless pure meadows, the charm of Horqin lies in the interlacing of grasslands, sandy lands, sparse forests, and rivers. The Horqin Sandy Land, one of the four major sandy lands in China, is embedded among the pastures, with oases and sand dunes appearing alternately. The Zhurihe Grassland on the Tongliao side is located in the hinterland, where herds of horses and sheep are scattered under the blue sky and white clouds. You can ride Mongolian horses, stay in yurts, and at night, gather around a bonfire to drink mare's milk wine and eat roasted whole lamb, living a day of authentic nomadic life. Daqinggou in Horqin Left Rear Banner is a green, deep gully stretching over 20 km in the sandy land, where spring water at the bottom of the gully gathers into clear streams; you can hike along the forest paths to Sanchakou and Xiaoqing Lake. Heading north into Hinggan League, the Greater Khingan Range forest area has patches of larch, and historical sites such as the Genghis Khan Temple in Ulanhot and the Senggelinqin Prince Mansion (Bo Prince Mansion) in Horqin Left Rear Banner are also scattered along this route. This grassland consists of multiple scattered pastures and tourist spots that are far apart from each other. Public transportation is limited, so visitors from other places often use Tongliao or Ulanhot as a hub and then take a car charter to various locations. Summer is the season when the water and grass are lush, making it the perfect time for horseback riding, watching horse racing, and attending bonfire parties. The temperature difference between day and night on the grassland is large, so it is advisable to bring a jacket even when traveling in midsummer.China · Horqin Left Rear Banner

Tianding Mountain Family Fun Experience (approx. 200 words) A weekend trip to Tianding Mountain with the kids! We tried everything – the cable car, the mountain bikes, and the double-track toboggan – a truly immersive experience! The sightseeing cable car winds through the lush greenery, offering panoramic views of the meadows and the city skyline from the summit, all while enjoying a refreshing mountain breeze. The brightly colored mountain bikes are self-controlled and incredibly fun, with winding curves that kept the kids laughing non-stop. Children under 130cm can ride with adults. The high-altitude double toboggan is thrilling yet relaxing, with its undulating tracks and fantastic forest atmosphere. A package deal combining all three attractions offers even better value. The park has excellent facilities, including a lawn for camping and relaxation. The staff are patient and helpful, and safety measures are in place. It's a great choice for a family outing near Changchun!

As far as I know, there are 6 permanent exhibition halls, and the rest are mobile exhibition halls (?). 4F houses the Duan Chenggui Calligraphy Museum, exhibiting replicas of Su Shi's "Ode to the Spring Scenery of Dongting Lake and Ode to the Pine Wine of Zhongshan." 3F contains the Jilin Provincial Modern History Museum, covering topics from the resistance against Tsarist Russia to the Xinhai Revolution, from the anti-Fengtian uprising to the War of Resistance against Japan and the liberation. A detailed look will inspire respect for these figures. 2F is dedicated to the ancient history of Jilin Province, from the dawn of civilization to the elegance of the Han and Tang dynasties, from the grandeur of Songmo to the splendor of the Ming and Qing dynasties. It covers the people of Yushu and Antu, the Buyeo Kingdom and Goguryeo, and the Liao, Jin, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties. The only drawback is that many artifacts in the Han and Tang Dynasty exhibition hall are on loan, resulting in a less than ideal experience. History buffs should definitely not miss it.

Nanhu Park was first built in 1935, formerly known as Huanglong Park. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, a large number of precious tree species, such as red spruce and black pine, were transplanted from Changbai Mountain. The park features a lotus pond, birch forest, golden sand beach, four pavilions, and a kilometer-long flower path. There is also a science museum and a Liberation Monument. There is a winter swimming area on the golden sand beach. Many grandfathers swim there; there must be one or two hundred people.
