Can I skip the electric shuttle bus at Niuheliang Archaeological Site Park?
The Niuheliang National Archaeological Site Park has three main attractions: the Site 1 (Goddess Temple) Protection and Exhibition Hall, the Site 2 (Stone Mounds and Altar) Protection and Exhibition Hall, and the Niuheliang Site Museum.
The normal route is to drive into the park through the main gate, park in the parking lot (10 yuan per car, unlimited time), then take the electric shuttle bus to the museum, then to Site 2, and finally to the Goddess Temple. After the museum visit, take the shuttle bus back to the parking lot and drive away. The shuttle bus costs 20 yuan for one loop.
All online guides recommend buying the shuttle bus ticket because walking is too far. Indeed, walking the entire loop is about six kilometers, and considering the walking within the museum, it's a lot of exercise for a day, which might be too strenuous for the average tourist.
However, there's a small design flaw in Niuheliang Archaeological Site Park: its attractions are not concentrated in one area but are instead traversed by National Highway G101. We all know that national highways cannot be closed arbitrarily, which provides us with convenience.
My method is to purchase tickets online and then be directed to the Second Site Protection Exhibition Hall for entry. Note that there is no public parking at the Second Site, but you can park on the roadside (as shown in the first picture) and walk into the park. The ticket checkpoint is only 200 meters from the exhibition hall. Don't worry, although it's a national highway, as a small county under Chaoyang's jurisdiction, there aren't many passing vehicles or traffic police, so safety isn't an issue.
After the visit, return to your parking spot. There's a small slope across the road; walk up to the Goddess Temple. This walk takes about ten minutes. After visiting the Goddess Temple, navigate to the Niuheliang Site Museum, park in the park's parking lot, and walk to the museum. Avoid taking the electric shuttle bus route. There's a small path to the left of the visitor center; cross the garden and go up. The whole journey takes about seven or eight minutes.
Of course, you can also walk backwards, visiting the museum first and then driving to the Second Site for parking and sightseeing; both are perfectly acceptable.
If you're traveling alone, taking an electric scooter is definitely worthwhile. It only costs twenty yuan, and if you have the whole family, you can save that money and have a nice meal in Chaoyang.
