Dahong Mountain

Dahong Mountain, also known as Naomuge Mountain, is located in Siziwang Banner, Inner Mongolia. The mountain is a Gobi grassland terrace cliff, which is called the standard stratigraphic section of the Tertiary System in the geological community. It is about 8 kilometers long from north to south, about 5 kilometers wide from east to west, and about 1,120 meters above sea level at its highest point. Because the sandy soil is red, it looks like a red mountain from the bottom of the steps, and it is extremely magnificent no matter how far or near it is viewed. The Dahong Mountain terrace suddenly falls from a flat place to form a cliff. After millions of years of wind and rain erosion, there are strange peaks and valleys in various shapes, some like giant whales, some like huge scallops, some like crocodiles, and some like tortoises rushing to the beach. Between sunrise and sunset in the morning and evening, the mountain is more dazzling orange and red, giving people a strong visual impact.Dorbod Banner · >100km from downtown

Datong Ancient City

Datong Ancient City is the historic core of Datong, Shanxi. It served as the capital Pingcheng during the Northern Wei dynasty, the western auxiliary capital during the Liao and Jin dynasties, and a strategic frontier stronghold in the Ming dynasty, earning it the enduring title "northern key." Over its 2,000-year history spanning dynastic changes, the city's location remained largely unchanged, preserving its chessboard-style street grid centered on Sipailou to this day. The 2008 conservation and restoration project reunited the city walls, reconnected the moat, and gradually revived ancient architecture and old streets, layering the grandeur of an ancient capital with modern life within the same walled city. The ancient town offers an exceptionally dense concentration of noteworthy sights: in Huayan Temple's Liao- and Jin-dynasty halls, the graceful "clasped-hands, smiling" Liao-dynasty bodhisattva statue in the Scripture Depository Hall has long been hailed as the "Oriental Venus"; Shanhua Temple preserves a complete complex of Liao- and Jin-era wooden architecture. The Nine-dragon Wall, originally a glazed screen wall before the Ming-dynasty Dai Prince's residence (destroyed in war), survives with its nine coiling dragons still radiant—older and larger than its counterparts in Beijing's Forbidden City and Beihai Park. Climbing the reconstructed Ming-style city walls reveals a bird's-eye view of the square town's crisscrossing four main streets and orderly rooftops. An evening wait for sunset on the ramparts, followed by the illuminated outlines of walls and watchtowers after dark, makes for one of the town's most enchanting moments. Walking is recommended for touring: the attractions inside the city walls are spaced closely, allowing Huayan Temple, Shanhua Temple, the Nine-dragon Wall, and the drum tower to form a connected route. When tired, you may turn into the area around East Drum Tower Street, where time-honored shops and snack stores are concentrated, making it ideal for resting and replenishing. The ancient town covers a considerable area, so allocate at least half a day and wear comfortable shoes to leisurely appreciate the layered historical depth of this ancient capital.China · Datong

Huitengxile, meaning "cold plateau" in Mongolian. The grassland is located inYinshanNorthern foothills. The grassland is dotted with 99 natural lakes, earning it the nickname "Ninety-nine springs." It combines the vast, majestic style of pastoral grasslands with the bright, delicate hues of southern Chinese water towns. Huitengxile Grassland has cold winters and cool summers, making it a renowned summer retreat since ancient times. The tourist season here runs from May to September, when the land is carpeted with flowers, and it is one of the few highland wetlands in the country. Locals believe the lakes on the grassland mostly formed from underground springs, hence they often refer to lakes as springs. This area was a prehistoric volcanic belt, where eruptions created countless "volcanic craters." Over the years, these craters became overgrown with wild grass and filled with rainwater, forming circular lakes. Legend has it that Genghis Khan, the proud son of heaven, once reined his horse at the "Ninety-nine Springs," admiring the scenic beauty. However, as the springs fell short of a hundred, he reluctantly departed, and thus the Yuan Empire never established its capital here. Legend has it that these 99 lakes never diminish or dry up during droughts,Tianlao LakeThe water neither rises nor overflows, calm as a mirror. The Ninety-nine Springs nourish and moisten like a mother's milk.HuiThe vibrant life of Tengeri. With its green mountains and clear waters, the attraction is divided into two main areas, Shencong Valley and Huanghua Beach, featuring 15 breathtaking views. Here, you can ride horses and camels, practice archery and shooting, watch Mongolian wrestling performances, climb the aobao mountain, visit local herders' homes, taste ethnic dairy products and milk tea, enjoy hand-grabbed mutton, and drink kumis... Datong Ancient City Wall

4.3/5
1.6k reviews
The Datong Ancient City Wall was constructed in 1372 during the Ming Dynasty's Hongwu era. This imposing and strategically formidable structure stands as a remarkable example of ancient Chinese military architecture. Its distinctive feature is the crenelated outer perimeter with protruding bastions and trapezoidal formations, creating a unique defensive design. The current wall was expanded by General Xu Da while garrisoning Datong, built upon foundations from the Han, Wei, Tang, Liao, and Yuan dynasties. Spanning 7.24 km in circumference, it encloses an ancient urban area of 3.28 square kilometers. Built with precisely cut stone slabs and rammed earth core faced with blue bricks, the wall measures 14m in height, 12m wide at the top and 18m at the base - 6.6m wider than comparable sections of Nanjing's city walls. The fortification features 62 gate towers, corner towers, and watchtowers, including four main gatehouses. The southern gatehouse is particularly impressive with its three-tiered structure measuring 61m across and 23.35m deep. Four corner towers dominate the wall's angles, with the octagonal northwestern tower (Qian Tower) being most distinctive. Among 54 watchtowers, the Hongzi Tower stands out as a rare architectural element. Additionally, 96 barracks were constructed along the wall. A 10m-wide, 5m-deep moat runs approximately 40m from the wall. Each main gate has an outer barbican (covering 17,600 square meters) and an additional crescent-shaped enclosure, creating three defensive checkpoints for entry. The gates feature arrow towers or two-story plaque towers. The four main gates are named: Heyang (East), Yongtai (South), Qingyuan (West), and Wuding (North). The comprehensive defensive system includes watchtowers, corner towers, gatehouses, and arrow towers spaced at intervals, complemented by drawbridges, barbicans, crescent walls, outer fortresses, and subsidiary walls, forming multiple layers of protection. The Datong Ancient City Wall stands tall and majestic, solid and precipitous, with tight defenses and complete facilities. It is a renowned fortified city with distinctive features in China's ancient military architectural history. Due to its crucial position in northern border defense and its significant role in numerous battles, it has long been honored as the "Imposing Stronghold" and the "Northern Key." A unique feature of the Datong Ancient City Wall is its gear-like outer contour. It has 52 protruding bastions with a trapezoidal structure, measuring approx. 23m at the base, 20m at the top, and covering a top area of 400 square meters. Corner bastion: Slightly taller than the watchtowers, each of the four corner bastions has an additional military control platform (also called observation platform) built outside it. The platform measures approximately 16.6m in width and 15m in length, spaced about 66m from the corner bastion, with a connecting footbridge to the city wall. This unique defensive structure is a distinctive feature of Datong Ancient City Wall.China · Datong

Datong Museum is a comprehensive museum, now a national first-class museum. It contains more than 10,000 pieces of cultural relics, and the majority of them are locally found. There are four exhibition halls in the pavilion, each of which shows the gorgeousness of Datong as the capital of Northern Wei Dynasty. The displays mainly include the ceremonial troops unearthed from Sima Jinlong's tomb, the headstones of Song Shaozu's ancestors, Persian silver coins, Xianbei accessories, and the Northern Wei Dynasty celadon. Among them, the stone carvings unearthed in the Northern Wei architectural sites outside the South Gate of Datong City are rarely seen in the art of stone carving.China · Datong

The Dahong Mountain in Inner Mongolia is like a red scroll inlaid on the land of northern Xinjiang, a masterpiece of nature. This mountain range, located deep in the vast grassland, is red all over, and is particularly spectacular against the backdrop of blue sky and white clouds. The unique landform is carved by time, with cliffs and folds and gullies coexisting, as if telling the story of geological changes over tens of millions of years. Standing on the top of the mountain and looking into the distance, the majestic grassland and the red mountain are intertwined, and the magnificent scenery is shocking. It is a tourist destination that combines natural wonders with the customs of the frontier.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Five-star review! The Yingxian Wooden Pagoda is breathtaking. This thousand-year-old pure wooden mortise and tenon structure from the Liao Dynasty was built without a single iron nail. The brackets are exquisite. It has stood majestically for a thousand years and is a gem of ancient architecture. It is a must-see for any road trip in Shanxi and is well worth a special trip!

It's definitely worth a visit. Huayan Temple in Datong Ancient City was built during the Liao, Jin, and Northern Wei dynasties. The architecture is magnificent and simple, and it's remarkably well-preserved. The Buddha statues inside are solemn and dignified, with vivid depictions. The murals, though hundreds of years old, remain remarkably vibrant. We are grateful to the people of Datong for protecting them so well.

On August 31st, I took advantage of the weekend for a two-day, one-night special forces tour of Hohhot. It happened to rain, so I'm especially grateful to the two train drivers who drove my son and me to the door to prevent us from getting soaked. Two weeks in advance was perfect. It's a bit chilly in the mornings and evenings now, so you can rent an electric scooter and combine the train ride with walking.

In mid-October, the Huitengxile Grassland was ablaze with yellow grass, the wind was strong, and tourists were few, lending the landscape a sense of vastness and tranquility. We chartered a car to enter the grassland, our first stop being the Niubaba Scenic Area. Without the hustle and bustle of peak season, the grassland revealed its true nature. Driving along the Windmill Avenue, huge white windmills lined the road, turning slowly in the wind, creating a picturesque scene against the golden grassland. The white yurts stood out against the backdrop of the grassland; the nearby lake was serene, with withered grass swaying on the banks, adding a unique autumnal charm. Along the way, we also saw vast golden pine forests, sunlight filtering through the branches and casting dappled shadows; herds of cattle and sheep grazed peacefully. Though the wind was strong, it couldn't dispel the vastness and serenity. Late autumn in Huitengxile, while lacking the lush green of summer, offered a truly pure grassland experience with its golden hues, open spaces, and free-flowing winds.

During the Spring Festival, the lantern festival and traditional song and dance performances were impressive and charming, and the crowds were quite large, making it very lively. There were also float parades, allowing you to see the performers up close. The ancient city wall is very long, and if you like walking, you can walk and practice on it.

It's on par with the National Museum of China. If you like the National Museum, you definitely should visit. It has many well-preserved treasures and gold artifacts. The restaurant on the first floor is reasonably priced, but the sign is blocked; be sure to ask a staff member for directions. They serve excellent Inner Mongolian specialties! 👍🏻

It must be said that the Datong City Museum does an exceptionally good job with its exhibitions. When you have the chance to visit, you'll find the lighting and the arrangement of the exhibits are incredibly meticulous. Of course, the museum also has many fine artifacts, but unfortunately, many of them are replicas.
