Wulanhada Volcano Geopark

Wulanhada Volcano Geopark

1.6k reviews
Wulanhada Volcano Geopark is hidden deep in the grasslands of Ulanqab. It is an exceptionally young volcanic chain, with geological surveys indicating eruption records within the last approx. 10,000 years. The park features a complete array of landscapes, including volcanic cones, lava flows, and barrier lakes, and is hailed as a natural "volcano museum," having even graced the cover of Chinese National Geography magazine. The volcanic cones are spread across the grassland like beads on a string, and local herdsmen have named them based on their shapes and colors: Red Mountain, Fire-Burning Mountain, North Alchemy Furnace, Black Brain Bag, Middle Alchemy Furnace, South Alchemy Furnace, North Sharp Mountain, and South Sharp Mountain. Half the fun of exploring this place lies in "finding the mountains by number." Popularity is concentrated on several "alchemy furnaces": Volcano no. 3 (North alchemy furnace) has a wooden boardwalk, allowing easy access to the summit for panoramic views of the entire volcanic chain and grasslands, with particularly photogenic light at sunset; Volcano no. 5 (Central alchemy furnace) features a well-preserved, rounded cone without boardwalks—hiking up the scree slope is more strenuous but rewards visitors with rare tranquility; Volcano no. 6 (South alchemy furnace), whose body was split open by early quarrying, exposes layers of reddish-brown and gray-black volcanic rocks, earning it the nickname "naked volcano." Combined with scattered volcanic debris, its desolate landscape resembles the surface of Mars. Renting a spacesuit to take "Mars landing" photos here is the park's highly popular signature activity. Further south, Volcano no. 7 and no. 8 are also called North and South pointy mountains. The base of Volcano no. 8 was once famous for its abundant agate deposits. The grassland is open and unobstructed, with strong winds, intense sunlight, and significant temperature differences between day and night. Windproof jackets and sun protection items are worth packing. On clear nights, there is little light pollution, and you can often see the Milky Way when looking up. The park and its surroundings have stargazing cabins and RV campsites, making it suitable to leave the itinerary for the night. The entire volcanic cluster is a protected geological heritage. Agates and volcanic rocks should only be admired, as digging them would damage the grassland. Vehicles should also stick to existing roads and avoid driving into the pastures.Qahar Right Rear Banner · 14.9km from downtown

Huitengxile, meaning "cold plateau" in Mongolian. The grassland is located inYinshanNorthern foothills. The grassland is dotted with 99 natural lakes, earning it the nickname "Ninety-nine springs." It combines the vast, majestic style of pastoral grasslands with the bright, delicate hues of southern Chinese water towns. Huitengxile Grassland has cold winters and cool summers, making it a renowned summer retreat since ancient times. The tourist season here runs from May to September, when the land is carpeted with flowers, and it is one of the few highland wetlands in the country. Locals believe the lakes on the grassland mostly formed from underground springs, hence they often refer to lakes as springs. This area was a prehistoric volcanic belt, where eruptions created countless "volcanic craters." Over the years, these craters became overgrown with wild grass and filled with rainwater, forming circular lakes. Legend has it that Genghis Khan, the proud son of heaven, once reined his horse at the "Ninety-nine Springs," admiring the scenic beauty. However, as the springs fell short of a hundred, he reluctantly departed, and thus the Yuan Empire never established its capital here. Legend has it that these 99 lakes never diminish or dry up during droughts,Tianlao LakeThe water neither rises nor overflows, calm as a mirror. The Ninety-nine Springs nourish and moisten like a mother's milk.HuiThe vibrant life of Tengeri. With its green mountains and clear waters, the attraction is divided into two main areas, Shencong Valley and Huanghua Beach, featuring 15 breathtaking views. Here, you can ride horses and camels, practice archery and shooting, watch Mongolian wrestling performances, climb the aobao mountain, visit local herders' homes, taste ethnic dairy products and milk tea, enjoy hand-grabbed mutton, and drink kumis... Through these diverse activities, you can fully experience the rugged and natural Mongolian customs.Qahar Right Middle Banner · 13.9km from downtown

Ulanqab Grassland is located in the central part of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, bordering Hebei Province in the east, Xilin Gol League in the northeast, Shanxi Province in the south, the capital city of Hohhot in the southwest, Baotou in the northwest, and Mongolia in the north, with a total area of 54,000 square kilometers. Ulanqab means "red cliff" in Mongolian. It is located in the temperate zone and has a continental monsoon climate with distinct four seasons. The terrain consists of four parts from north to south: the Mongolian Plateau, Ulanqab Hills, Yinshan Mountains, and Loess Hills. The Daqing Mountain, a branch of the Yinshan Mountains, and the Huitengliang stretch across the middle, while the branches of the Manhan Mountain, Matou Mountain, and Sumu Mountain are winding and tortuously distributed in the southeast of the territory. It is customary to call the part south of the Daqing Mountain the front mountain area, which is relatively warm and has more rainfall; the part north of the Daqing Mountain is called the back mountain area, which has a special windy climate. Chi Lechuan, under the Yinshan Mountains, the sky is like a dome, covering the four fields. The sky is vast, the fields are vast, and the wind blows the grass low to reveal cattle and sheep. This is the true portrayal of the Ulanqab grassland. There are alpine meadow grasslands with green grass and colorful flowers. The beautiful and rich Ulanqab grassland is the eastern gate of western China and the back garden of the capital Beijing. When you come here, you can experience the rich ethnic culture of the grassland, unique natural scenery and rich historical sites. In this colorful and legendary place outside the Great Wall, the "six wonders" of grassland, historical sites, sacred springs, lakes, forests and folk customs constitute a unique tourist attraction, which is a huge temptation for people who have lived in modern cities for a long time.Qahar Right Middle Banner · 13.9km from downtown

The volcanoes were spectacular, especially number six. I didn't get a direct view of the others, only from a distance, so they weren't that impressive. The sunset was truly beautiful, definitely worth seeing. However, the signage inside was somewhat inadequate; there weren't enough, and sometimes it was easy to get lost. Also, the gravel road for parking wasn't ideal for low-chassis minivans, and the section from the ticket gate to the park was riddled with potholes.

Before going, I wondered if it was worth it, but once inside the scenic area, I was truly awestruck; the scenery was indeed beautiful. We entered in the afternoon, bought a combined ticket, and used different modes of transportation, which was both an experience and helped reduce the children's fatigue. The volunteer service within the scenic area was excellent, and the sunset in the evening was beautiful. If time allows, it should definitely be a full day.

In mid-October, the Huitengxile Grassland was ablaze with yellow grass, the wind was strong, and tourists were few, lending the landscape a sense of vastness and tranquility. We chartered a car to enter the grassland, our first stop being the Niubaba Scenic Area. Without the hustle and bustle of peak season, the grassland revealed its true nature. Driving along the Windmill Avenue, huge white windmills lined the road, turning slowly in the wind, creating a picturesque scene against the golden grassland. The white yurts stood out against the backdrop of the grassland; the nearby lake was serene, with withered grass swaying on the banks, adding a unique autumnal charm. Along the way, we also saw vast golden pine forests, sunlight filtering through the branches and casting dappled shadows; herds of cattle and sheep grazed peacefully. Though the wind was strong, it couldn't dispel the vastness and serenity. Late autumn in Huitengxile, while lacking the lush green of summer, offered a truly pure grassland experience with its golden hues, open spaces, and free-flowing winds.

For off-peak travel, I highly recommend visiting Hongshiya in October. The alpine meadows and light snow on the mountain peaks are absolutely stunning. There are fewer people, making it easier to take great photos. You should definitely drive there. Also, be sure to dress warmly, as it can be freezing cold below 10°C!

The Dahong Mountain in Inner Mongolia is like a red scroll inlaid on the land of northern Xinjiang, a masterpiece of nature. This mountain range, located deep in the vast grassland, is red all over, and is particularly spectacular against the backdrop of blue sky and white clouds. The unique landform is carved by time, with cliffs and folds and gullies coexisting, as if telling the story of geological changes over tens of millions of years. Standing on the top of the mountain and looking into the distance, the majestic grassland and the red mountain are intertwined, and the magnificent scenery is shocking. It is a tourist destination that combines natural wonders with the customs of the frontier.

The package deal was quite reasonable. We bought the Nanshan Route 1 ticket, but Route 1 includes the zoo, which requires going down the mountain to transfer to Route 2 to go up again, meaning we had to climb the mountain once more or take a ride on a tarpaulin, so we didn't go. The wind was best on the mountain, and the cosmos flowers around the cable car station were beautiful! The high-altitude swing, the thrilling "Step by Step" ride, and the rainbow slide were all very exciting! The middle school students had a great time! A single ride takes about 2 hours.

Highly recommend experiencing this after visiting the volcano! The local owner also recommends it because around 2025, a geothermal hot spring with water reaching a depth of 2800 meters will yield water at around 64 degrees Celsius. Soaking in it is incredibly comfortable; your skin feels incredibly smooth, haha! The mud bath is especially recommended. Just remember to turn on the tap on the left side for a while when you're in the mud bath to get hot water. The other hot springs are also very comfortable and relaxing. Here's a guide to the hot spring experience: 1. First, change your shoes and clothes. 2. After soaking, shower and change into clean, disposable cotton underwear and a bathrobe. 3. Go to the rest area for food and drinks; coupons are available. 4. Finally, after eating, drinking, and soaking, change back into your own clothes. Great! Very comfortable and relaxing, especially after walking over 10,000 steps! Haha!

Shengshuiliang Jiulong Bay truly hides a treasure trove of autumn scenery in Inner Mongolia. On a clear day, the blue sky and white clouds against the backdrop of the mountains and fields are exceptionally soothing. Taking the cable car to the summit, the view opens up dramatically upon exiting. The trails are flanked by vast birch forests on one side and robust coniferous forests on the other, creating a rich tapestry of colors that makes for beautiful photos from every angle. The mountaintop meadow stretches out expansively, where you can see camels and horses leisurely grazing. The colors of the forest unfold along the mountainside, offering a vast and expansive vista. Driving here, the scenery is breathtaking, making it perfect for those who love mountain landscapes, allowing you to immerse yourself in the unique tranquility and vastness of the autumn mountains.

Wulanchabu Museum is the only comprehensive public museum in Wulanchabu City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. It was founded in 1958 and was rated as a national third-level museum by the China Museum Association and the State Administration of Cultural Heritage in 2012. The museum fully displays the long history and profound cultural heritage of Wulanchabu from ancient times to the Republic of China. The entire display focuses on the organic combination of "seeing history through objects" and modern information technology. It emphasizes the use of cultural relics to speak, and widely uses cutting-edge technologies such as multimedia and historical scene restoration, making people feel as if they are there.
