Reviews: Melbourne Puffing Billy Steam Train + Phillip Island Penguin Island Day Trip
Guest User2026-02-27
This itinerary was really great for us traveling with kids. The penguin watching was in the evening, so we left the hotel around noon, which suited our child's schedule. Our first stop was the Puffing Billy Railway, a popular station with great photo opportunities. It was sunny at first, but halfway through the journey, a sudden downpour started. So we skipped the zoo and went straight to Phillip Island. We saw kangaroos along the way, and Cape Nobis was beautiful. Our guide, Xiao Li, was also fantastic. We did see the baby penguins in the evening, but my older son got impatient in the end. We took many close-up photos though. Highly recommended!

This trip was brilliant and such a good combination of things to do in one trip. A great atmosphere with the group and the tour guide Lisa was amazing and so informative. She made me feel so comfortable with doing it as a solo trip and got to know everyone as best she could in the time. The sanctuary and penguin parade were a great experience and I would recommend to anyone. The view points were breathtaking and you got to see animals in their wild habitats. 10/10 experience.

Reviews: Classic itinerary! Puffing Billy Railway classic half-day tour with transfers - Chinese/English speaking driver guide option available

Because I couldn't get tickets for the miniature train, I booked an English-speaking tour instead. The driver and guide were very helpful and provided excellent explanations. They even took photos and videos for me. I'm so grateful!
Reviews: Melbourne Puffing Billy Railway + Phillip Island: Steam train and little penguin exploration tour

We arranged a door-to-door pick-up and departed at 10 o'clock. We didn't have to wait for the early departure. The time arrangement was reasonable. Jennifer, the driver and guide, was very dedicated. The train trip was also good. Although the zoo was a bit small, we saw animals worth seeing and were able to interact with kangaroos. Nobbys Corner was beautiful and worth checking in. The little penguins were also good. Overall, I highly recommend this hotel!

At first, I was a little worried because the tour was in Chinese, but our guide, Carter, kindly explained things in English, so I was able to complete the tour without any problems. Please note that you'll need to bring cash for zoo admission. Also, for the Puffing Billy train, sit on the left side of the train for a better view.
