The Temple of Heaven was built in the 18th year of the Yongle reign in the Ming Dynasty (1420 AD) and underwent renovations during the Qianlong and Guangxu reigns of the Qing Dynasty. It served as the imperial sacrificial altar for emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties to worship heaven and pray for bountiful harvests.
