Guangji Bridge is located outside the east gate of the ancient city in Chaozhou, Guangdong Province, spanning the Han River. It is one of the eight scenic spots in Chaozhou. Built in 1171 during the Southern Song Dynasty, it combines beam bridge, pontoon bridge, and arch bridge designs, making it the world's first opening-closing pontoon bridge. Along with Zhaozhou Bridge, Luoyang Bridge, and Lugou Bridge, it is known as one of the "Four Great Ancient Bridges of China." The bridge consists of 24 piers and 18 wooden boats connected together, forming a unique style described as "eighteen boats and twenty-four islets." The bridge also features various pavilions and towers, earning it the poetic names "twenty-four towers with twenty-four styles" and "a one-mile-long bridge with a one-mile market." Guangji Bridge is not only a vital transportation route but also a historical landmark of Chaozhou culture.Chaozhou · 3.4km from downtown

Chaozhou Han Wen Gong Temple was built to commemorate Han Yu, a writer and thinker in the Tang Dynasty. Founded in the second year of Song Xianping (AD 999), it is the oldest Korean temple in my country. Han Wen Gong Temple is surrounded by mountains and rivers. The temple records the history of the Han Temple, the achievements of Han Yu in curing tides, and the poems that praise the Han Temple. Climbing up to the Shilang Pavilion, you can also enjoy the beautiful scenery of Chaozhou. Han Yu served as the prefect of Chaozhou for less than eight months. During this period, he exorcised evil, supported farmers, redeemed slaves, established education, made outstanding contributions to the development of Chaozhou, and won the respect and memory of Chaozhou people.Chaozhou · 3.9km from downtown

Pai Fang Jie is located in the old city of Chaozhou. There are many arcade buildings along the street. There are 22 arches standing on the street, telling the great achievements of many Chaozhou heroes in history. Each archway has a story behind it, which is intriguing. Of course, the many Chaozhou delicacies on the street are not to be missed. It is said that the archway that appeared earlier on the street was the "Pillar History" archway in the 12th year of Ming Zhengde (1517). Historically, there were as many as 39 archways here. Later, they were damaged due to various reasons, and now there are 22 restored. , they stand across the street, and the ancient charm is long. Most of the arches were set up for jinshi, champions, and Shangshu, which recorded their great achievements and demonstrated the outstanding people of Chaozhou. In addition to visiting historical sites, the food along the street is even more attractive. Chaozhou hand-made beef balls, taro cakes, etc. are very unique. Excellent choice.Chaozhou · 3.1km from downtown

Kaiyuan Temple, also known as "Kaiyuan Town Guochan Temple", is a temple named after the serial number "Kaiyuan" in the prosperous years of Kaiyuan of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang Dynasty. Chaozhou Kaiyuan Temple was built in the twenty-sixth year of Kaiyuan in the Tang Dynasty (738 AD) and has a history of more than 1,200 years. At the beginning of the temple's construction, Chaozhou Kaiyuan Temple had a high status in the local area. After continuous repairs in the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties, today's Kaiyuan Temple still retains the main layout of the Tang Dynasty, and integrates various dynasties. The architectural art of the modern era, the Liuwa Caizhudan wall, is spectacular. Walking through it, the incense is lingering, and there is an endless stream of believers who come to worship the Buddha and pray for blessings. In addition to the Kaiyuan Temple part of the ancient city of Chaozhou, there is a modern and newly built Kaiyuan Temple Thai Buddha Hall on the east side of the Hanjiang Bridge. The temple is not large, but it has a Thai style. Tourists who are planning to go to the Hanwen Temple can take a tour.Chaozhou · 2.8km from downtown

Longhu Ancient Village was built in the Southern Song Dynasty, and has a history of more than 1,000 years. There are still hundreds of ancient buildings. Walking through it, you can see the epitome of the Millennium Chaozhou House everywhere. The ancient village is mainly composed of three streets and six alleys. There are many aboriginal clan surnames here, and there are more than 60 Jinshi and Juren from Li Sai Keju in Longhu Village, walking on the thick stone road, and there are countless houses on both sides. The public ancestral hall and Jiadi, each household has its own story. These buildings not only reflect the different architectural styles of the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, but also gather the essence of typical Chaoshan folk crafts such as wood carving, stone carving, inlaid porcelain, color painting, and shell ash sculpture.Chaozhou · 12.1km from downtown

Here, you can witness the "three wonders" formed by volcanic and glacial movements 200 million years ago: the wonder mortars, wonder caves, and wonder stones. Over 3,000 glacial potholes are scattered across the area, with the "two glacial pothole marvels"—the [nine-spiral red mortar] and [immortal peach mortar]—as well as the [wind-rocking stone] that moves with a gentle push, showcasing nature's extraordinary craftsmanship. Xu Concubine's Mansion is the residence of Xu Yu, the concubine of Princess De'an, the daughter of Emperor Yingzong of the Northern Song Dynasty. The mansion was built in the reign of Emperor Yingzong of Song Dynasty, and it has been repaired many times in the past, but it still retains its original structure. 42 meters, the depth is 47 meters, and the construction area is about 1800 square meters. The main building is three into five rooms. The first entrance and the back seat are equipped with a mountain hall, and the rooms are combined into nine rooms. The east and west enclosures of the central hall lead from the hall, room and study. Behind the upper hall is a backyard that runs across the whole house. The three entrances of the main body and the hills form an "I-shaped" pattern. The enclosed house is hidden outside the gables on both sides of the middle block, forming a unique setting of a single hall, a single courtyard, and a single patio. The walls are made of slabs of rammed ash and blue bricks, and the two walls on the east side of the main hall in the back seat still retain the peach red bamboo-woven ash walls. The structure of the whole building is rigorous, simple and generous.Chaozhou · 2.9km from downtown

I came here because of its reputation, and visited Chaozhou Ancient City, Guangji Bridge, Guangji Tower, and Kaiyuan Temple to learn about Chaoshan culture and taste local delicacies. In March, the spring sunshine was just right, the weather was pleasant, and I felt very comfortable.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Five stars! A must-see in Chaozhou is Guangji Bridge, and it truly lives up to its reputation! As one of China's four ancient bridges and the world's earliest movable bridge, walking on it truly allows you to appreciate the remarkable wisdom of the ancients. "Eighteen shuttle boats and twenty-four islands"—one side features stone piers and pavilions, while the middle section is a pontoon bridge made of shuttle boats. Walking on the pontoon bridge, gently swaying, with the river breeze from the Han River blowing in your face, is incredibly comfortable. Rows of antique pavilions are scattered about, their couplets and plaques full of charm, and the ancient stone slabs underfoot bear the marks of time. During the day, strolling on the bridge allows you to quietly admire both banks of the Han River, with the ancient city of Chaozhou on one side, full of vibrant life. If you have enough time, you can also watch the pontoon bridge being dismantled in the evening, a famous spectacle known as "crossing the river and dismantling the bridge." At night, when the lights come on, the entire bridge is reflected in the river, creating a breathtaking night view. When you come to Chaozhou, you really can't miss Guangji Bridge. Take a walk on the bridge, feel the river breeze, and experience the cultural heritage of this ancient city. It's definitely worth it!

After visiting the Thai Buddhist Hall at Kaiyuan Temple, a taxi ride cost just over three yuan took me directly to Han Yu's Ancestral Hall. Walking there would have been 1.8km, which would have been quite tiring. Taxis are relatively cheap in Chaozhou. This place mainly introduces the life of Han Yu from the Tang Dynasty, his contributions during his exile to Chaozhou, and praises his patriotism and dedication to the people. It's worth taking a short stroll, as the reservation ticket is free, essentially like visiting a small park. The ticket entrance for Guangji Bridge is just over 100 meters away. After visiting Guangji Bridge, you can go directly there to experience the culture and charm of a pontoon bridge before returning to the ancient city, avoiding backtracking.

Kaiyuan Temple is right inside the entrance to Chaozhou Ancient City. However, it's currently under renovation, and many halls are inaccessible; you can only look at them from the outside. Incense is free, making it one of the better free attractions in Chaozhou Ancient City. Photography of Buddha statues is not allowed inside the temple, so I took some pictures of the architecture. The roof decorations are very exquisite and beautiful. It seems like all temples in the Chaoshan region have roofs like this!

We navigated to Longhu Ancient Village, but accidentally ended up at its south gate. This area wasn't fully developed yet, which ironically made for a unique tour experience; the whole place remained quite pristine. Some abandoned houses in the ancient village showed strong historical traces; countless years have passed here, and now only weeds and crumbling walls silently bear witness to the passage of time. Further north, the area becomes more bustling, with trendy cafes, snack stalls, and shops selling Chaozhou's four treasures (food, clothing, and crafts), giving it a more touristy feel. Overall, it was less crowded and the experience was quite pleasant.

There are two main reasons why you'll enjoy the visit: First, you'll be immersed in the wonders of nature, with strange rock formations, underground rivers and caves, and geological forests all blending together to create a stunning and unique landscape that's definitely worth a visit. Second, it's great for children and perfect for family educational trips. Taking kids to the Qinglan Geological Museum and exploring the geological sites firsthand allows them to connect with nature and learn about geology—a fun and educational experience that combines learning with play.

Although Chaozhou West Lake is not as famous as Hangzhou West Lake, it is also exquisite and small, with Lingnan charm, and worth savoring. There are some very special tropical and subtropical plants in the park, which are not seen in the north. The water of West Lake is rippling, and the West Lake under the sunset adds more charm.

There are so many rooms that it's easy to get lost. A large area at the back is closed, with only a small section open, but it's still quite unique. There aren't many explanations, so it's a little disorienting. There are plenty of coffee shops inside, so you can always grab a bite.
