Wow, wow, wow! St. Peter’s Square is stunning and larger than I imagined. The fountains, the architecture is all so grand!

St. Peter's Square is oval, surrounded by two semicircular marble colonnades, forming three corridors magnificent, the square can accommodate up to 500,000 people. The square and St. Peter's Basilica are located on the central axis.

St. Peter's Square is named after St. Peter, an apostle of Jesus who Catholics believe was the first Pope. The square is centered on an ancient Egyptian obelisk, built in 1586 and on its current site. Gian Lorenzo Benini designed the square about 100 years later, including four deep giant Doric colonnades in the "Main Church". The granite fountain built by Benini in 1675 matches another fountain designed by Carlo Madeno in 1613.
