The tour was one-on-one with Ronald, and it was amazing. He shared fascinating historical insights, took great photos and videos, and Machu Picchu itself was simply breathtakingly beautiful! The second day was dedicated to Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca). Adrian, the same friendly driver, picked me up again, and we collected Ronald before heading out. It was just the three of us on the journey. The hike started relatively easy; it’s only about 2 km in total. But when we hit the steeper sections, things got seriously challenging. Even though I’m in good shape and exercise often, the high-altitude and low air pressure made it tough, despite a couple of days acclimating beforehand—a real reality check for me! Fortunately, there are alternatives like horse or quad rides, so don’t worry if the hike seems too daunting. Reaching the top was worth all the effort—the views of Rainbow Mountain are stunning with its vibrant colors. Taking photos with llamas and alpacas there is a fun bonus, so be sure to bring some coins to tip. Altogether, these two days were absolutely wonderful. Its lower level served as a platform for planting sacrificial flowers and herbs, while the upper level housed a temple. The massive stone structures at the site showcase the Incas' superb masonry skills, with stones fitting together seamlessly without any adhesive. At the same time, this place records the only victory of the Incas over the Spanish. To protect Machu Picchu, the Incas destroyed the roads leading to it and transported the small golden idols for sacrifice to Machu Picchu, sacrificing Ollantaytambo to save Machu Picchu. Today, it is also the departure station for most tourists taking the train to Machu Picchu. After the rain clears, Ollantaytambo shrouded in mist under the sunlight is stunning! At the foot of the mountain, the town of Ollantaytambo is a place that should not be overlooked. Before traveling, I prepared a checklist, arranged for a SIM card and plug adapter in advance, and carried my ID and boarding pass, keeping important documents close at hand. In this vibrant spring season, I chose clothing that balanced style and practicality, accessorized with scarves and hats. Power banks, chargers, and other electronic accessories were also essential.
