Ulan travel guide and discussion

When I visited Chaka Salt Lake, I expected to see the famous mirror-like reflections and take some beautiful photos. But as I spent more time there, I realised that the best part of the trip wasn't just the scenery. It was the little things I discovered along the way. I remember walking slowly along the salt-covered ground, looking down at the tiny crystals beneath my feet. The lake looked different depending on where I stood. Sometimes the sky reflected perfectly on the water, and sometimes a gentle breeze broke the reflection into little waves. I could have spent hours just watching it. I also enjoyed noticing how people experienced the lake differently. Some were busy taking photos, while others simply stood quietly and enjoyed the view. I found myself becoming one of those people who didn't feel the need to capture every moment. My favourite discovery was a quieter spot away from the crowds. I stood there for a while, feeling the cool wind on my face and watching the clouds move slowly across the sky. There wasn't anything special to do, but somehow, I felt completely content. That day taught me that local discovery doesn't always mean finding a hidden attraction or visiting somewhere nobody knows about. Sometimes, it's about looking a little closer at a familiar view and allowing yourself to enjoy it in your own way. I came to Chaka Salt Lake expecting beautiful photographs, but I left with something more meaningful: a peaceful memory of a place where I could slow down and simply enjoy the moment. #localdiscoveries #travelersvoice #chinatravelcircle #hotdiscussions

#worthitomot #ChakaSaltLake #QinghaiLakeWestLoop I did the classic Xining one-day double: drove 3.5 hours to Chaka Salt Lake (茶卡盐湖) for the 9 am mirror, then 2.5 hours back east to the Qinghai Lake west loop (环湖西路) for afternoon rapeseed bloom. Chaka ticket in 2026 is ¥60 peak (May–Oct), ¥30 off-season, 48-hour re-entry; the vintage train is ¥50 one-way, shoe covers ¥10 (buy them—salt crystals cut your ankles). The old scenic area has the famous railway-track reflection; Sky No.1 (天空一号) is ¥60 same price, fewer people, heart-shaped salt pools. I chose old Chaka, arrived 8:40, and got 40 minutes of dead-calm water before wind rippled it at 10. Then drove to the west loop: no ticket, just pull over at km markers 24–31 where rapeseed meets the lake fence. A herder charged ¥20 cash to walk his cow path to the water. Mistake: I wore white sneakers without shoe covers and the brine stained them yellow—bring dark shoes or tall covers. Another mistake: doing both in one day means 6.5 hours driving; by the time I hit the west loop at 5 pm the light was perfect but my passenger was car-sick from the 109 Highway rollers. Worth it? Chaka is a 90-minute wonder (mirror + train + done); the west loop is a slower 2-hour drive with stops. Together they're a full but rewarding day if you start before 7 am. Question: is Chaka's ¥60 mirror worth the detour when the west loop gives you lake+flower for free, or does the salt flat offer something the grassland never can?

I want to share my experience returning to the mesmerizing landscapes of Northwest China on the classic Qinghai-Gansu Loop, because this is one of those rare regions on Earth that you simply cannot fully digest in just one visit. Standing on the vast, open roads where emerald green grasslands suddenly give way to towering sand dunes and ancient Silk Road strongholds, I was reminded why this land pulls me back again and again. From tracing the glass-like reflections at Chaka Salt Lake to catching the sunset glow across the dramatic, fiery ridges of the Zhangye Colorful Danxia formations, every leg of this journey feels like stepping into a totally different world. The magic here isn't just in seeing the sights once… it's about returning with fresh eyes to watch the shifting light transform Mingsha Mountain at dusk or taking extra time in Xining to wander through historical temples and lively local night markets without rushing. To make the absolute most of this journey, smart planning and local insight will save both your time and travel budget. Booking a private charter car is essential because the iconic spots from the vibrant, multi-colored salt pools of Da Qaidam Emerald Lake to the ancient arches of Jiayuguan Pass.. are spread across vast distances. For photography, local secret timing is everything: hit Chaka Salt Lake either before 10 AM or after 4 PM when the winds die down to capture those pristine mirror reflections, and visit the Danxia landforms strictly during late afternoon light when the rock colors truly pop. When budgeting, secure your high-demand tickets early, especially the Mogao Grottoes Class-A passes which require booking 30 days in advance via the official website, and set aside 110 RMB for Mingsha Mountain admission. Visiting during the summer months between June and August rewards you with plush green grasslands in Qilian and golden rapeseed blossoms in Menyuan, offering a completely different seasonal palette that makes returning year after year so rewarding. What keeps me coming back to Northwest China is the sheer variety of active experiences packed into a single route. One day you are walking past the sacred, quiet courtyards of Ta'er Monastery, and the next you are riding camels across the sweeping desert sands of Crescent Spring or catching a scenic train across a reflective salt pan. As night falls in Dunhuang, spend your evening sampling local street snacks at the bustling Shazhou Night Market before heading out into the quiet desert for incredible stargazing. Northwest China is never a "check-it-off-the-list" holiday; it is a profound journey through history, geology, and culture that leaves an indelible mark on your soul, guaranteeing that the moment you leave, you’ll already be planning your return trip. #NorthwestChina #QinghaiGansuLoop #TravelChina #SilkRoad #ChakaSaltLake #ZhangyeDanxia #Dunhuang #Wanderlust #ExploreChina #repeatdestination

We stayed in Caka Town the night before, which made for a convenient 10-minute drive to Caka Salt Lake (altitude: 3,059m) early the next morning. We started by taking the mini-train to the terminal station in the central scenic area (¥50 for a one-way ticket, planning a 4km walk back). After renting shoe covers (¥10 with a ¥50 deposit refundable at any station), we were eager to step onto the salt lake. The weather was perfect! Against the backdrop of a clear blue sky and white clouds, the "Mirror of the Sky" was absolutely breathtaking. Walking across the flat, high-salinity lake surface was a surreal experience. After spending a long time taking photos, we slowly hiked back. The lake views at the various stations along the way were still spectacular, and we even saw the mini-train shuttling across the water and massive salt sculptures.

The most enchanting part of Chaka Salt Lake is how the pristine white salt, lake blue, clouds, and distant mountains overlap in the same view. When the weather is clear, the water surface acts like a natural mirror, and the reflections change with the wind and light. It is a place to walk slowly and take photos at your own pace; there is no need to rush to find an iconic photo spot. After entering the park, you can first walk along the wooden boardwalk toward the center of the lake to observe the textures of the salt flats, the reflections in the shallow water, and the distant snow-capped mountains. The boardwalk offers an open view, perfect for capturing people and scenery in the same frame. If you encounter the small train, you can use it as a leading line in your composition to create a sense of depth and a travel vibe. We recommend dividing your visit into three parts: first, take in the overall scenery; then, focus on taking photos; and finally, leave time to sit by the lake or the boardwalk to watch the clouds. Sunny days are great for capturing blue and white tones, while evenings make it easier to encounter pink-purple and orange-gold skies. When the wind is strong, the reflections will break up, but don't be disappointed; the salt crystals and mountain lines will actually have more depth. When taking photos, try to choose a low angle to include both the sky and the water surface in the frame. Don't always stand in the center; use the boardwalk, tracks, or distant mountain lines to lead the eye. Light-colored clothing blends easily into the salt lake; white dresses, denim, brown, or bright-colored jackets can all create different styles. Remember to bring a hat and sunglasses. For practical arrangements, bring both sun protection and warm clothing: the UV rays are strong, and the reflection on the lake surface is intense. The temperature difference between morning and evening and the wind can be significant. Wear comfortable, non-slip shoes, tour along the designated areas, and do not step into dangerous or closed-off salt flats just to take photos of reflections. Also, protect your mobile phones and cameras from salt water and fine sand. If you want to save money, prepare drinking water, simple snacks, sunscreen, and charging equipment in advance to avoid unnecessary purchases inside the scenic area. When time is limited, prioritize your energy on the lake reflections, the wooden boardwalk, the distant mountains, and the changing light. If you prefer quiet, avoid peak crowd times and slowly experience this white salt lake from the edges. Chaka Salt Lake is more than just a Mirror of the Sky photo spot; it is a place to leave some space for the wind, the clouds, and yourself. Don't pack your itinerary too full. Waiting for a gust of wind to stop and the few seconds when the lake surface returns to calm are often the moments most worth remembering.✨ Tags:

Step onto the surreal "Mirror of the Sky" at Chaka Salt Lake ✨🗺️. This dazzling salt flat in Ulan transforms into a giant glassy canvas, reflecting fluffy clouds and endless blue skies—you’ll feel like you’re walking in a dream! Your adventure starts with a scenic tourist train ride right up to the shimmering lake (it’s both fun and super convenient!). Don your provided salt lake boots (trust me, they’re perfect for wading in without getting salty shoes!), then head straight out for those famous photo ops. 📸 On calm days, the surface becomes a flawless mirror—stand on the lake with sky stretching beneath your feet and snap that iconic reflection shot that’s all over travel feeds. Mornings and evenings offer the best lighting (hello, golden hour magic). Craving a snack or drink break? Plenty of stands serve local treats—bring small cash and try something new before hopping back onto the train. Quick tip: Sunglasses are essential—glare is no joke! Chaka Salt Lake truly delivers a one-of-a-kind, playful photography playground. #ChakaSaltLake #ChinaTrip #LandscapeLover #TravelTips #EpicPhotos #china #chinatravel #travel2026 #naturalwonders #familytravel

Xining is great, but I won't be going back 😭 A brutally honest guide to avoiding pitfalls I just finished a 5-day trip to Xining and the Qinghai-Gansu small loop. Honestly, Xining's blue skies, evening breeze, and vast Northwest scenery are truly healing. Every photo looks like a wallpaper. It's niche, relaxed, uncrowded, and quiet—a sense of vastness you don't find in inland cities! But I honestly wouldn't blindly come back a second time... It's not that the scenery is bad; it's that the trip involves hidden suffering, too many scams, and it's very easy for beginners to fall into traps! I've compiled a ton of real, hard-earned experiences that no one tells you. It's all the truth. If you're planning to go to Xining, make sure to read this before you leave to avoid 90% of the pitfalls!! 🌬️ Reason 1 to reconsider: The climate is far more intense than you'd imagine, and it's really tough Don't be fooled by the "Xining summer resort" label! The comfort only lasts while you're in the shade during the day; the actual experience is super grueling! The altitude in downtown Xining is 2,261 meters. It doesn't look high, but most visitors from out of town experience mild altitude sickness upon arrival! Don't try to be a hero just because you're in good shape! On the first day, don't run around taking photos, don't stay up late, and absolutely do not take a hot shower! I took a shower the night I arrived, and by early morning, I had a headache, chest tightness, dry mouth, and shortness of breath. I couldn't sleep until 3 AM—it was agonizing! Plus, the climate is extremely dry! If you're coming from the south or coastal areas, you'll likely have a dry, sore throat, chapped lips, and dry, bleeding nasal passages on the first day. Skincare products won't save you—you must prepare moisturizer, lip balm, and nasal spray in advance. The most ridiculous part is the extreme temperature difference between day and night + the toxic UV rays! It's comfortable when it's sunny during the day at around 25°C, but it cools down instantly when it's cloudy or windy. At night, it drops to just over 10°C. A 15°C temperature difference between day and night is the norm! Important!! The UV rays here are 3 times stronger than inland! Without cloud cover, you can get tanned or sunburned even on cloudy days! I was lazy and didn't apply sunscreen, and my shoulders were red, stinging, and peeling within half a day. Sunglasses, sun-protective clothing, a hat, and sunscreen are essential—you can't even dare to go out without proper sun protection! 🚗 Reason 2 to reconsider: The transport scams are deep, and beginners are 100% going to get ripped off This is the biggest pitfall of traveling in Xining, bar none!! All the attractions in Xining are super spread out. Qinghai Lake, Ta'er Monastery, and Chaka Salt Lake are hundreds of kilometers from the city center. Public transport is scarce and slow. If you're traveling independently, you're almost forced to carpool, charter a car, or join a tour group, which has become a disaster zone for illegal taxis and unscrupulous vendors ripping off tourists! ❌ Never trust people soliciting passengers at the train station/airport As soon as you exit, you'll be surrounded by drivers chatting you up, shouting "Qinghai Lake for 50 per person" or "Low-price one-day lake tour." It sounds like great value, but it's all a trap! After you get in at a low price, they'll force you to pay more halfway through. If you don't pay, they'll dump you on the side of the road. They'll also force you to go to jade, Tibetan silver, and local specialty shops, and won't let you leave unless you buy something! ❌ Absolutely do not book one-day tours under 200 yuan The lake tours you see online or on the street for 199, 99, or 88 yuan are all pure shopping traps! Most of the day is spent visiting various shops, with forced sales of oxygen, Tibetan costume photos, and gift boxes. You'll have less than 2 hours of actual time to explore and take photos at the scenic spots. You're just paying to suffer! ✅ Reliable transport advice 1. For short trips within the city, only take legitimate ride-hailing services or taxis; prices are transparent with no surcharges 2. For the Qinghai-Gansu loop, prioritize booking a pure-play chartered car through a legitimate platform. 800–1,200/day is the normal market price. Make sure to sign a formal contract to prevent mid-trip price hikes 3. Refuse all roadside low-price carpooling or private drivers soliciting you. Being greedy for small savings will definitely lead to big losses 🛕 Reason 3 to reconsider: The scenic spots are full of hidden traps; everything is a tourist trap 1. Ta'er Monastery | Full of pitfalls As a must-visit landmark in Xining, it looks solemn and quiet, but the surrounding scams are ridiculously numerous! ❌ Don't believe the "scalpers offering free tickets" or "secret paths into the scenic area" at the entrance. They are all scams. You'll be blocked on the secret paths and end up wasting your money ❌ Refuse all unlicensed guides or private guides who approach you; their explanations are confusing and they charge exorbitant prices ❌ The amulets, Tibetan-style bracelets, old Tibetan jewelry, and handmade items from grandmas at the stalls by the entrance are 99% mass-produced goods from Yiwu, marked up more than ten times. If you don't know the market, definitely don't buy them! ✅ The right way to play: Buy official tickets online for 70 yuan (students get half price), follow the official guide for the tour, and don't buy any roadside souvenirs! 2. Along the lake route | Tons of hidden fees Along the popular lake-loop road, there are tons of private, unauthorized pastures and niche photo spots. There are no official signs, and locals will randomly block the road to charge fees, ranging from 10 to 50 yuan! The scenery inside is ordinary and not worth the ticket price at all—it's just pure exploitation of tourists. If you see a private toll point, just bypass it. The official free viewing platforms have scenery that is more than enough! 🍜 Reason 4 to reconsider: Popular food streets are all traps—expensive and taste bad Don't be misled by popular travel guides anymore! Mojia Street and Shuijing Lane are definitely not where locals go for food! These two popular streets are specifically designed to rip off out-of-town tourists. All the snacks are marked up double. The liangpi, tianpei, and hand-grabbed mutton taste perfunctory and inauthentic. The value for money is extremely low; a casual meal costs over 80 per person, which is totally not worth it! ✅ Local's secret food guide If you want authentic Xining Halal food, go straight to the Xinqian Night Market or the alleys around Dongguan Street! It's affordable, authentic, and the portions are huge. The hand-grabbed mutton is tender and not gamey, the pan-fried potatoes are crispy on the outside and glutinous on the inside, and the Qinghai yogurt is rich and refreshing. You can eat until you're stuffed for just a few dozen yuan—it's the authentic Northwest vibe! 🏠 Accommodation pitfalls | Don't just book anywhere! If you pick the wrong location, you'll be struggling the whole time ❌ I don't recommend staying in homestays or hotels near Xining Station or scenic spots Most are simple, renovated properties with poor hygiene and terrible soundproofing. Prices double during peak season, and the value for money is extremely low! ✅ Best accommodation choice: The Chengxi area in the city center It has convenient transport, complete supermarkets, and tons of dining options. The environment is clean and comfortable, making it super convenient for daytime travel and nighttime food exploration! 📝 Honest summary | It's not that it's not beautiful; it's just too easy to fall into traps Xining's scenery is truly worth the trip: clear blue skies, vast wilderness, and quiet ancient temples that heal all anxiety But travel here is dense with scams, the climate is harsh, and there's a huge information gap regarding transport. If you set off blindly without doing research, you'll just fall into traps the whole way and pay to suffer My sincere advice: If it's your first time in Xining, prioritize choosing a legitimate, pure-play small tour group. Practice good sun protection and moisturizing, don't be greedy for low prices, and don't spend money recklessly—only then can you truly understand the romance of the Northwest! I've already helped everyone avoid all the landmines. Follow this guide, and you'll easily unlock the perfect Xining trip✨

While exploring Chaka Salt Lake (茶卡盐湖) in Qinghai, I found Liucui Coffee (流萃咖啡) inside the scenic area — a perfect place to take a break and enjoy a cup of coffee. Sitting by the window, you can enjoy the beautiful scenery outside while taking photos with the unique salt lake landscape as the background. It’s a lovely stop to relax, recharge, and appreciate the beauty of Chaka Salt Lake at a slower pace. 📍Location: Great Northwest, Haixi, Qinghai | Chaka Salt Lake & Xiaochaidan Lake Halfway through life, I've been to many places, but only standing here was I truly struck by nature✨ Looking out, the world is vast and boundless. The salt lake acts like a giant mirror, reflecting the blue sky, white clouds, and distant mountains, with the water and sky almost merging into one. A gentle breeze blows, creating ripples on the lake surface. The vastness before me sweeps away all the accumulated fatigue and inner turmoil. Walking to the lake, there is white salt crust underfoot, with the rolling Gobi mountains in the distance as a backdrop. You can stand anywhere—no need to hunt for the perfect angle—and every snapshot looks like an atmospheric photo. As evening approaches, the sunset casts a golden glow, dyeing the entire lake in warm orange tones. The visual impact is something you have to see in person to understand how healing it is. ✅Travel tips ▪️The UV rays are extremely strong; be sure to bring sunglasses, a sun hat, and high-SPF sunscreen. ▪️The salt crystals by the lake are sharp; it is recommended to wear anti-scratch shoe covers when entering the lake—do not go barefoot. ▪️Best viewing times: sunrise and sunset, when the light is soft and best for photos. ▪️It is windy with large temperature differences; bring a light jacket even in summer. After half a lifetime of rushing about, you must make a trip to see such vast scenery. Only when you see the vastness of the mountains and rivers do you realize that life is worth it.

August in Qinghai averages 20℃, perfect for summer escapes. This small loop route has no backtracking and offers a one-stop experience with Tibetan temples, lakes, grasslands, Danxia landforms, and popular scenic roads. The entire trip is self-guided with no low-price shopping traps. Day 1 Xining cultural and historical route Start by exploring city attractions. In the morning, visit Kumbum Monastery to admire the three arts of butter sculptures, murals, and embroidery. Stroll along the prayer corridor with its vibrant red walls and golden roofs. On the way back, pass through Laji Mountain, where prayer flags cover the hillsides against a backdrop of snowy peaks—free to enjoy and photograph. Then visit Riyue Mountain and Daotang River to trace the story of Princess Wencheng’s journey to Tibet. Arrive at the west side of Qinghai Lake in the evening, avoiding the crowded Erlangjian Scenic Area. The lakeside rapeseed flower fields stretch endlessly, the evening breeze is refreshing, and stay overnight in Heimahe for easy sunrise viewing the next day. Day 2 Salt lake secret day tour 💎 Watch the sunrise over Qinghai Lake at Heimahe in the early morning, with the lake shimmering golden. Then head to Chaka Salt Lake and take the small train to the lake’s center to capture the mirror-like reflections. In the afternoon, drive to the G315 U-shaped highway, a straight road that seems to reach the sky, with safe viewing platforms along the way. Visit the colorful Dacaidan Emerald Lake nearby, where the salt pools look like a painter’s palette. It’s quiet and perfect for aerial photography. Stay overnight in Dacaidan, far from light pollution, where the Milky Way fills the night sky. Day 3 Qilian snow mountain and grassland loop 🌿 Set off early for Aru Monastery, a quiet and less commercialized Tibetan temple. Travel through the vast Qilian grasslands dotted with cattle, sheep, and wildflowers, with opportunities for short horseback rides or walks. Cross the Datongshu Pass at over 4,000 meters elevation to see prayer flags against snowy peaks. In the afternoon, climb Zhuoer Mountain, known as the “Little Switzerland of the East,” where Danxia landforms, forests, grasslands, and snow-capped peaks come together in one frame. On the way, visit Binggou Forest, a pristine forest with flowing streams, ideal for cooling off and breathing fresh air. Day 4 Off-the-beaten-path mountain and countryside spots 🏞️ Wake early to admire the majestic pure white Gangshika Snow Peak. Pass by Menyuan rapeseed flower viewing platform, where the flower sea is endless in July and still lush green in August. On the way back, stop at Ebao Ancient City, a thousand-year-old post station rich in Silk Road history. Return to Xining and spend the afternoon at the Qinghai Provincial Museum to learn about the plateau’s history. In the evening, stroll along Mojia Street and Shuijing Alley to shop for yak meat and goji berry souvenirs, wrapping up your trip. Must-try foods: hand-pulled lamb, yak yogurt, niangpi (cold skin noodles), clay pot lamb, noodle soup, sweet fermented rice wine

Chaka Salt Lake niche 3-day travel guide Before departure, I read plenty of discouraging notes saying that during summer, Chaka Salt Lake is scorching at noon, strong winds disturb the mirror surface, the main scenic area is crowded, and mass-produced photo shoots are overpriced. Many people just check in quickly and leave, making it hard to appreciate the vastness where salt industry history, the Gobi grassland, and Tibetan villages blend together🍃. Only after spending three days with the mindset of avoiding peak times by visiting early morning and evening, resting indoors at noon, and steering clear of the popular lake heart boardwalk to explore the original salt flats and ancient temples did I realize that Chaka’s romance is more than just the sky mirror; it’s hidden among old salt field ruins, Tibetan temples, and the Gobi grassland. This salt lake town at 3,000 meters elevation has chilly Gobi winds in the morning and evening, a windless, crystal-clear lake surface at dawn, strong light to avoid in the afternoon exhibition hall, and sunsets that dye the salt flats golden orange. At night, the highland Milky Way fills the sky. This tested 3-day guide helps you avoid crowds and discover a different, slow-paced Chaidamu experience✨ 1️⃣ Three-day sightseeing and real experiences📸 Day 1 Chaka town old district + Chaka temple + salt lake east highland at dusk🌿 Skip rushing into the main scenic area early. Stroll the local old district of Chaka town in the morning to avoid the tourist commercial street and see local herders’ daily shopping. Visit Chaka temple on the town’s edge, a Gelugpa sect ancient temple with a quiet, solemn prayer corridor, almost free of tour groups. At noon, when UV rays are strongest, stay in the salt lake cultural center to learn about the thousand-year salt harvesting history and rest indoors to escape the heat. In the evening, climb the east highland of the salt lake without going down to the lake center. Enjoy the vast white salt plain and wait for the sunset to spread over the lake and distant mountains. For dinner, avoid restaurants near the scenic area and head into the town’s residential area for an old local eatery. A steaming clay pot of lamb with barley bread lets you experience Chaidamu’s local flavor🍲. Wear durable, breathable clothes👗. The salt flat ground is rough and sharp, so bring high-top waterproof shoe covers. The highland UV rays are intense, so sunglasses are essential. Dress modestly when entering temples. Day 2 Mohe old salt field ruins + Gahai Lake wetland light stroll🏔️ Say goodbye to the commercial main scenic area and spend the day at Mohe old salt field, an original salt harvesting flat still in operation. Salt piles and old salt harvesting machinery are scattered across the wilderness with no vendors or trendy installations, letting you enjoy the vast salt sea alone. Cars should avoid potholes and dirt roads. In the afternoon, head to Gahai Lake, a freshwater lake with reeds and waterfowl, a warm wetland amid the Gobi. The grass waves in the wind are very soothing. Have a simple lunch in town with northwest-style noodles and fresh beef and lamb. Rest in the car or under a tree during the strong noon light, then continue when the light softens. Return in the evening with the Gobi breeze. Wear slip-resistant hard-soled shoes🥾. Salt flat stones are sharp. The temperature difference between day and night is huge, so even in summer, carry a thick windbreaker. The highland has frequent gusts, so secure your hat well. Day 3 Mohe camel farm ruins + suburban grassland highland leisure walk🌌 On the last day, explore the history of Tibetan camel transport at the Mohe camel farm ruins. The old assembly hall and dormitories preserve memories of the camel caravans. Camels stroll leisurely on the grassland, letting you feel the stories of the old camel routes into Tibet. At night, go to the gentle suburban highland, away from the town’s lights and noise, to sit quietly and gaze at the brilliant highland Milky Way. Temperatures drop sharply at night, so change into thick long pants for warmth👖. 2️⃣ Convenient travel and transportation guide🚗 Most people choose to drive to Chaka town; short trips within town can be done by taxi. Mohe salt field, camel farm, and wetland sites are best reached by car. Rural roads have many bends and potholes, so drive carefully. Official parking lots charge reasonable fees; do not enter private pastures without permission. Travel route: town cultural temple → original salt field and Gobi wetland → camel transport ruins and grassland highland, moving forward without backtracking. Stick to outdoor activities in the morning and evening, rest indoors at noon to avoid strong light and wind. Most town streets and old salt field outskirts are free; buy tickets for the main salt lake scenic area as needed. Check wind and weather before entering the lake. 3️⃣ Local accommodation recommendations🏡 Chaka town residential courtyard homestay 📍Location: deep in the residential area of Chaka town, away from the noisy main road near the scenic area entrance 💰Average price in July–August: 190–320 CNY per night (includes northwest-style homemade breakfast) ✨Accommodation highlights: tucked in a quiet part of town, clean and tidy courtyard, isolated from the noisy traffic of the scenic area. The host is a local Mongolian-Tibetan resident who knows niche spots for sunset and stargazing. Shops and restaurants are within walking distance. Much better value than the popular hotels near the scenic area entrance. 4️⃣ Practical travel tips⚠️ Clothing preparation: The highland summer has extreme temperature differences between day and night. Short sleeves plus a thick windbreaker are standard. Barefoot walking on the salt flats is strictly prohibited; salt crystals are sharp and can easily cut skin. The wilderness has wind, sand, and mosquitoes, so bring insect repellent. UV rays remain strong on cloudy days, so high SPF sunscreen and lip balm are essential. Drink plenty of warm water to prevent altitude sickness. Pitfall avoidance: ❌ Don’t buy expensive salt sculptures or souvenirs in the scenic area; town shops offer better value. ❌ Avoid roadside private salt pits and cheap one-day tours; brine caves pose safety risks. ❌ Don’t enter herders’ private pastures without permission. ❌ Rinse skin promptly with clean water after leaving the salt lake; salt water is corrosive. Travel tips: Chaka temple is quiet and good for peaceful visits early in the morning. Mohe salt field has excellent light and atmosphere at dusk. Mohe camel farm is sparsely visited on weekdays. On windless, clear days, the salt lake reflection is best; don’t force entry on windy days. Personal travel impressions and summary💚 After leaving Chaka, the memories are not just the popular mirror salt lake but the slowly turning prayer wheels at Chaka temple, the endless white salt piles at Mohe salt field, the swaying reeds by Gahai Lake, and the vast grassland at Mohe camel farm. I used to think Chaka was only good for photo check-ins, but wandering the Gobi made me realize this place blends a thousand years of salt harvesting history, Tibetan beliefs, camel transport stories, and salt lake wilderness into one. There is no over-commercialization here. Herders live peacefully, and the ancient temples, old salt fields, and grasslands retain their original appearance. No need to rush through checklists or endure scorching sun and crowds. Walk slowly through town streets, original salt flats, and Gobi grasslands to understand the vast, quiet essence of this highland salt lake. In July and August, Chaka is a secret salt realm above the Qinghai wilderness. This niche slow travel guide is for travelers who love Gobi salt lake scenery🌟. Pick a windless, clear day to set off and meet the Chaidamu salt lake.

Before going to Xining, I always thought of it as just a transit point for Qinghai Lake and Chaka Salt Lake. After staying and exploring for a few days, I realized Xining itself is worth visiting: it has temples, museums, a highland zoo, and plenty of parks and old streets perfect for leisurely walks. Plus, Xining’s pace is much more relaxed than the popular loop routes, prices are relatively affordable, and the food has a distinct northwest flavor. For first-timers, I recommend setting aside 4 days to separate the city and surrounding areas. This way, you won’t feel rushed and your body can gradually adjust to the high altitude. Xining’s average elevation is about 2,261 meters. Although most people won’t experience obvious discomfort, avoid intense exercise and overpacking your schedule on the first day. 🗺️4 days 3 nights itinerary Day 1: Dongguan Mosque → Moji Street → Central Square → Shuijing Alley Day 2: Qinghai Provincial Museum → Xinning Square → Qinghai-Tibet Plateau Wild Animal Park Day 3: Nanliang Hutai Ruins Park → Xining People’s Park → Beichan Temple Day 4: Ta’er Monastery → Danggar Ancient City → Riyue Mountain 🏙️Day 1: old town culture and Xining cuisine My first stop was Dongguan Mosque. This is an active religious site, so when visiting, pay attention to the open areas, avoid entering prayer zones, don’t take photos of people praying, and dress modestly. After leaving Dongguan Mosque, you can walk or take a taxi to Moji Street. It’s now quite commercialized, so don’t expect every trendy shop to be amazing. It’s mainly good for soaking up the city center vibe and sampling some local snacks. In the afternoon, head to Central Square and Shuijing Alley. Shuijing Alley is a good place to buy souvenirs and snacks, but when purchasing items like yak jerky, goji berries, or cordyceps, always check the price, net weight, and production info first. Don’t rush into buying just because the staff are enthusiastic. Try to get back to your hotel early on day 1, drink less alcohol, and avoid long hot showers right after arriving in Xining. 🏛️Day 2: museums and highland animals On the second morning, visit the Qinghai Provincial Museum. It’s best to do this in the first half of your trip to get a sense of Qinghai’s history, ethnic culture, and artifacts. This background makes the natural sights you see later more meaningful. The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with last entry at 5:30 PM. It’s usually closed on Mondays. Admission is free but requires advance booking through official channels. Summer is busy, so plan ahead. After the museum, have lunch near Xinning Square, then head to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau Wild Animal Park. The zoo is quite large—I set aside most of the day. The highlight isn’t common animals but highland species like snow leopards and Pallas’s cats. There are slopes inside, so wear comfortable shoes. If you’re with elderly or children, don’t rush the route. 🌳Day 3: leisurely park visits and city views Start day 3 at Nanliang Hutai Ruins Park. It’s not the most popular spot in Xining, but it’s less crowded and good for history enthusiasts. Next, visit Xining People’s Park. The park has a local, everyday feel where you can see residents walking, exercising, and drinking tea. After two busy days, a relaxed park visit is more comfortable than rushing to more attractions. In the afternoon, go to Beichan Temple. It’s built on a hillside, so some paths require climbing. Don’t push yourself to go higher if the weather is bad or you’re tired. From a viewpoint with a wide view, you can overlook Xining city. This day is mainly for slow exploration. In the evening, try a Qinghai-style hot pot to save energy for the next day’s trip outside the city. 🏔️Day 4: Ta’er Monastery, ancient city, and Riyue Mountain Day 4 covers the longest distances, so I recommend hiring a car, joining a carpool, or booking an official day tour. First stop is Ta’er Monastery. This isn’t just a photo spot. Don’t touch Buddha statues or ritual items, and some halls prohibit photography. Follow all on-site instructions. The monastery usually opens early in peak season, but opening times vary by season. Confirm via official channels before you go. Next, visit Danggar Ancient City. You can stroll the main street at a relaxed pace. Some internal exhibition halls may charge separately. If you don’t want to visit the exhibitions, walking around the outer streets is fine. The last stop is Riyue Mountain. It’s higher in elevation than downtown Xining, and the wind is noticeably stronger. Even in summer, bring a windbreaker. If it’s cloudy, rainy, or you feel dizzy, don’t keep climbing quickly. Visiting all three places in one day is tight. If you’re with elderly or children, consider only Ta’er Monastery plus either Danggar Ancient City or Riyue Mountain. 🏨Where to stay For first-timers, I suggest staying near Central Square, Dashizi, or Xining Station. Central Square and Dashizi are convenient for dining and shopping, making it easy to explore city attractions. Xining Station is good if you plan to take a train or join a loop tour the next day, but check the actual distance to the station entrance when booking. If you prefer quiet and higher-quality accommodation, choose the Haihu New District, but you’ll need taxis to reach some old town attractions. 🍜Xining food recommendations 🥣 Qinghai old yogurt: thick texture, try it with little sugar first to taste the original flavor. 🍲 Qinghai-style hot pot: usually served in a copper pot with beef, lamb, meatballs, tofu, and vegetables. Best shared with a group. 🍜 Lamb intestine noodles: has a distinctive flavor. If you don’t like offal, order with caution. 🥩 Hand-pulled lamb: choose reputable restaurants with steady customers. Order by the number of people, don’t order too much at once. 🥔 Pan-fried lamb ribs: lamb ribs, potatoes, and side dishes stir-fried together. The flavor is strong and pairs well with staple foods. 🥟 Sweet fermented rice, niangpi (cold skin noodles), and gamianpian (hand-pulled noodles) are also worth trying. If you have a sensitive stomach, don’t mix cold dishes, lamb, and yogurt all on the first day. ⚠️Useful tips and warnings ☀️ UV rays in Xining are strong. Apply sunscreen even on cloudy days. Bring a hat and sunglasses. 🧥 There’s a big temperature difference between day and night. Bring a light jacket in summer. Take a windbreaker for Riyue Mountain. 🚗 Ta’er Monastery, Danggar Ancient City, and Riyue Mountain are outside the city center. Don’t rely on straight-line distances on maps. 💊 Don’t treat oxygen tanks as a must-have. For normal city trips, slow down and rest well. Seek medical help if you feel unwell. 🛍️ Be rational when buying medicinal herbs, silverware, and expensive souvenirs. Don’t buy so-called “collector’s items” if you don’t understand quality. 📅 Museum, temple, and attraction opening hours may change unexpectedly. Confirm again on the day you go. My biggest takeaway from this Xining trip is: don’t just see it as a transit point for Qinghai travel. Spend a few days exploring slowly, and you’ll find a city with the vastness of a highland city plus the everyday charm of parks, old streets, and snack stalls. For your first trip to Xining, do you want to check in at Ta’er Monastery, the highland zoo, or start with a Qinghai-style hot pot? travel guide days 3 nights in Xining travel food check-in northwest travel

Friends! Stop crowding Chaka Salt Lake!! 😭 On this trip to Qinghai, I unexpectedly discovered Chaerhan Salt Lake—the largest salt lake in Asia and the second largest in the world, with an area equal to 56 Chaka Salt Lakes! Fewer people, stunning scenery, and no need to wait in line for the classic "dumpling" photo—this place is legendary‼️ 📍Location Golmud City, Qinghai Province, about 60 km from downtown. Just search for "Chaerhan Salt Lake Scenic Area" on your map. 🚗 How to get there? Self-drive: About 40 minutes from Golmud along National Highway G215. The road is in great condition. Carpool/charter: Around 100–150 yuan per person round trip from the city. Drivers all know the way. Group tours: Many Qinghai-Gansu loop tours stop here, but self-driving is recommended for independent travelers. 🎫 Tickets & transportation Ticket: 20 yuan (very reasonable!) Shuttle bus: 60 yuan (mandatory, since the entrance to the core scenic area is over 10 km away, and the views along the way are breathtaking!) Total cost: 80 yuan per person, more than half cheaper than Chaka Salt Lake! 🌈 Best time to visit Season: June–September (summer temperatures around 20℃, just right) Time of day: 4–7 PM (softest light, the salt lake turns emerald green, perfect for reflection photos) 📸 Photo tips (pay attention!) Outfit: Red or white long dress ✅ Avoid blue or green (they clash with the salt lake colors) Spot: Deep inside the park at "Wanzhang Salt Bridge" and "Salt Flower Viewing Platform"—few people and wide-open views Technique: Use your phone’s wide-angle lens and crouch low to capture the sky, salt lake, and yourself all at once Caution: The salt lake looks soft but is actually very hard. Don’t wear flip-flops (they hurt!) ⚠️ Reminders Wear sunglasses 🕶️: The salt lake reflects strong UV rays that can sting your eyes Bring sunscreen: The high altitude plus salt reflection can cause sunburn quickly Don’t drink too much water: There are very few restrooms in the park, and the conditions are questionable… Avoid splashing salt water on your clothes: When dry, it leaves white salt stains and makes clothes stiff 💡 Why do I strongly recommend it? Because this place is truly undeveloped! No awkward crowds like at Chaka where 50 people stand in front of one mirror spot. Here, you can run freely or even lie on the salt lake (the salt layer is thick and won’t collapse). Plus, it’s China’s most important potash fertilizer production base. You get to enjoy beautiful scenery while witnessing an industrial marvel—super meaningful! Go before it gets popular! When you return, remember to tag me in the comments so I can see your emerald green salt lake photos~✨

Sisters! When you go to Qinghai, don’t just focus on the salt lakes and Chaka‼️ This time I went all in, flooring it into the Hoh Xil no-man’s land— a world natural heritage site, one of China’s largest uninhabited areas, known as the “forbidden zone of life.” What happened? I cried😭 Not from fear, but moved to tears! 📍 Where is Hoh Xil? Yushu Prefecture, Qinghai Province. About 200 km south from Golmud along the Qinghai-Tibet Highway (G109). The core area is near the Sonam Dargye protection station. 🚗 How to get there? ⚠️ Important reminder: Hoh Xil is not a tourist attraction! No tickets are required, but you must respect nature. Self-drive: Golmud → Kunlun Pass → Budo Spring → Sonam Dargye protection station → Tuotuo River. The entire route is paved, but altitude rises from 2,800 m to 4,600 m, so be sure to prevent altitude sickness. Charter/shared ride: Local travel agencies in Golmud offer one- or two-day tours to Hoh Xil, priced at 800–1,500 CNY per person. Drivers know the roads and can act as guides. Don’t hike on your own: This is no joke. No signal, wild animals, extreme weather— even locals don’t dare. 📅 Best time: June–August (weather is relatively stable, Tibetan antelope calving season, you can see lambs running with their mothers) 📸 Highlights & photo tips 1️⃣ Tibetan antelope 🦌 Near Sonam Dargye protection station, easiest to spot between 5–7 PM. Remember: stay quiet, don’t get out to chase! Use a telephoto lens (phone cameras won’t cut it, renting a camera is recommended). Seeing their white rumps as they run is super heartwarming💖 2️⃣ Kunlun Pass 🏔️ At 4,767 m altitude, surrounded by endless snow-capped mountains and fluttering prayer flags. You can stop here to take photos, but it’s windy and cold, so wear a windbreaker. 3️⃣ Budo Spring 💧 A magical spring that never freezes. Water temperature stays near 0°C year-round but never freezes. The ice-blue spring water against the snowy background is stunning. 4️⃣ Hoh Xil snow mountains and wilderness The overwhelming vastness can’t be captured even one-thousandth by a phone. Use a wide-angle lens, crouch low, and frame the sky, road, and wilderness together with a caption like “No one is here, yet life thrives.” ⚠️ Survival guide (key points!) Altitude sickness: Take Rhodiola 2 days in advance, bring oxygen, avoid bathing and strenuous activity. Clothing: Down jacket + windproof outerwear. It can snow even in summer❄️ Food: Self-heating rice, chocolate, hot water. No convenience stores along the way. Toilets: None! Use a cloth for privacy in the wild... Phone signal: Basically none once you enter the mountains. Download offline maps in advance. Don’t litter: Every plastic bag could be mistaken for food by Tibetan antelopes and cause death. 💡 Why strongly recommend? Because this is not a tourist spot, it’s the last pure land on earth. When your eyes meet those of a Tibetan antelope, you’ll understand what “life” really means. No commercial noise, only wind, snow mountains, and freedom. It’s not for enjoyment, it’s for reverence. Before you go, watch the movie Hoh Xil to better understand the weight of this land. After you go, remember to share your story with me—I’ll be waiting in the comments✨

#cultureshock One of the biggest culture shocks for me at Qinghai Lake wasn't the scenery—it was the pace of life. I'm used to traveling with a packed schedule, trying to see as much as possible in one day. But at Qinghai Lake, everything felt slower. People weren't rushing from one attraction to the next. Many simply stood by the water, sat quietly, or watched the distant mountains without saying much. Another surprise was how vast everything felt. There were long stretches where all I could see was the blue lake, the open sky, and endless grasslands. At first, the emptiness felt unfamiliar. Then it became incredibly calming. It made me realize how rarely I experience a place with so much open space and so little noise.

Girls! If you think Qinghai only has the sky mirror, you’re missing out big time! Right in Dachaidan lies a palette spilled by the gods—Emerald Lake! 🌊 The lake’s water is naturally Tiffany blue, with salt lakes scattered like emeralds, so clear you can see the white salt crystals at the bottom. The best part is fewer crowds and beautiful scenery—every shot looks like an “Iceland alternative” 📸! This detailed guide will walk you through unlocking this emerald secret spot. Don’t go too late or you’ll have to wait in line 😭 📍 Location: Dachaidan Town, Haixi Prefecture, Qinghai Province About 400 km from Chaka Salt Lake. Self-driving or chartered car recommended. Navigate to “Dachaidan Emerald Lake.” It’s convenient from Golmud Airport or Dunhuang, with scenic views of the U-shaped road and water yardang formations along the way 🚗 ⏰ Best time: mid-June to late September (sunny days!) Emerald Lake’s beauty depends on sunlight! On cloudy days, the water looks dull. Only under bright sun does the lake show its dreamy blue-green color. The light is softest from 4 to 7 PM, perfect for capturing golden reflections on the water ✨ 🎫 Tickets & transportation Tickets: 60 CNY in peak season (tentative this year), round-trip small train 60 CNY. It’s best to buy a ticket and ride in, then walk out (5 km one way, about 1 hour). You’ll see salt lakes of different colors along the way. Internal transport: The small train stops at 4 stations. The first is the largest and bluest lake. The last has the fewest people and clearest water, ideal for reflection shots. 📸 Must-do spots: 4 photo locations 1️⃣ Largest lake (station 1): The bluest and biggest lake, like a huge sapphire. Stand on the white salt shore and shoot from a low angle for perfect human and reflection harmony. 2️⃣ Heart-shaped lake (near station 2): Only visible fully by drone or from a high vantage point. A must-visit for couples! 💕 3️⃣ Tiffany blue lake (station 3): The water is light blue-green, like emerald. Wear a white dress and stand in the water up to your ankles for the “standing on emerald” effect. 4️⃣ Sky mirror twin (station 4): Shallow and calm water with reflections as clear as Chaka Salt Lake, but fewer people! Hold your phone close to the water for stunning shots without filters. 👗 Outfit guide Colors: white / light blue / pale yellow! Avoid dark colors that spoil the fresh look. Shoes: wear sandals or go barefoot! Bring waterproof shoes (or rent shoe covers for 10 CNY). Salt crystals sting your feet but it’s worth it for the photos 😆 Accessories: sunglasses + wide-brim hat (to block glare) + red shawl (great for close-up shots) ⚠️ Pitfalls to avoid (learned the hard way) Don’t step on salt caves! There may be hidden salt caves (deep pits) under the lake. Don’t go too deep. Safety first! Bring a drone! Only aerial shots capture the full view and color layers of Emerald Lake. Great value. Sun protection, sun protection, sun protection! The high-altitude UV is strong. You can get sunburned in 30 minutes with no shade. Don’t drink the lake water! It looks clear but is extremely salty. Avoid touching your eyes after contact. Arrive before 10 AM! After noon, tour groups arrive and it gets crowded. You’ll have to queue for the best spots. 🍜 Food and drink nearby Dachaidan’s “Yibula specialty clay pot”: lamb clay pot (tender lamb, sticky potatoes), about 70 CNY per person, served with Qinghai old yogurt. Bring your own snacks: no restaurants inside the park (only water for sale). Remember to bring self-heating rice or snacks. When you see that pure Tiffany blue, you’ll instantly forget all the travel fatigue. The sunlight sparkles on the lake like scattered diamonds, and you standing there become part of the painting 🖼️ Some say Emerald Lake is “the earth’s tears,” but I think it’s “a treasure box hidden by heaven” 💎. Before it gets too popular and crowded, go now! Guess why Emerald Lake’s water is Tiffany blue? Share your answer in the comments for a chance to win a “Qinghai travel map” 🎁

Only after completing the full Qinghai-Gansu loop will you realize that instead of squeezing into the crowded Chaka Salt Lake, it’s better to head straight to Chaerhan. Here, the lake naturally glows with a soft apple green. Whether it’s cloudy or sunny, you can capture clear, stunning shots without relying on strong light filters. The entire scenic area has a clear route plan, with a continuous walkway running through the core salt fields, so you don’t waste energy backtracking. The salt lake and Gobi have no shade, and long hikes can cause severe sun exposure. You don’t need to check in at every viewpoint. Just focus on three hidden spots to fill your entire travel photo album. Tested and organized with detailed, easy-to-follow tips. 📍Complete guide for entering and traveling Location: Chaerhan Salt Lake Visitor Center, Golmud, Qinghai Province Fees: Peak season pass is 100 yuan, including round-trip shuttle bus; students and seniors over 60 get half-price tickets. Visitors with Shaoxing ID can enter free but must buy the sightseeing bus ticket. Entry transport: Private cars can only park in the external lot. Visitors take the official shuttle bus about 30 minutes to the core salt fields. After getting off, choose to walk around the lake for an immersive experience or pay 15 yuan for a one-way sightseeing electric cart to save energy. Opening hours: Peak season (Apr–Oct) 8:00 AM–8:00 PM; off-season (Nov–Mar) 8:30 AM–6:30 PM Altitude 2,670 meters. After arrival, slow your pace to avoid mild altitude sickness. Plan 3–4 hours for the best experience. 🌤Seasonal and time-of-day photo guide Best months to visit: May–Oct May and June have fewer visitors and a comfortable experience, but some salt pools have low water levels. July and August bring abundant rain, making the lake full and emerald green, but summer tour groups increase, so popular spots require waiting. September and October see fewer crowds, with fully crystallized salt flowers, though the surrounding Gobi grasslands turn yellow. Daily golden photo windows: 9:00–11:00 AM and 5:00–7:00 PM These times offer soft light, making skin tones even and avoiding the harsh midday sun from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Midday light causes glare on the lake and coincides with large tour groups, making photos crowded. 📸Three hidden photo spots to avoid crowds and enjoy the salt lake 1. Sightseeing bus end point rest area The first rest stop after getting off has a drink shop where you can buy the signature green apple salt lake drink for about 25 yuan. The green drink matches the lake’s color perfectly, creating a great atmosphere. Nearby are Instagrammable swings, beach chairs, and a giant Ferris wheel installation, perfect for relaxed vacation-style photos. 2. West side secluded salt pool Walk straight from the bus stop to the first fork, then head west. This area rarely has visitors, so you can have the entire jade salt pool to yourself. The pure white salt flats paired with gradient green water create a spacious, cool, and sophisticated look for portraits without waiting in line. 3. Lotus salt pool at Bishui Yaotai The iconic lotus-shaped brine lake in the park. Drone shots capture the full lotus outline, while ground-level photos show rich, soft water layers with a texture similar to Cotton Castle. This unique feature stands out on the entire route. Other viewpoints have very similar scenery and can be passed by without detours. ⚠️Tested tips to avoid pitfalls—must read before traveling 1. The once-popular long salt road is now closed, with staff patrolling the area. Do not climb over fences to get close. 2. The once-famous water piano installation has been removed. No need to detour looking for it to avoid wasted trips. 3. If you want to reach the shallow water’s edge for photos, wear waterproof shoes. Regular sneakers easily get soaked by the brine, while waterproof boots let you freely access secluded lakeside spots. 4. The Gobi lake area has no shade and very strong UV rays. Sunscreen hats, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen are essential. At night, remember to apply hydrating masks to repair sun-damaged skin.
