🇳🇱 From Fluffy Highland Giants to Storybook Lambs: The Stars of the Dutch Countryside! 🌾🐑
When you step outside the busy streets of Amsterdam, the Dutch countryside turns into a living storybook. The endless green fields, sand dunes, and canals are home to an incredible array of beautiful, photogenic animals. If you love wildlife and farm animals, here are the most iconic creatures you will meet roaming the scenic landscape of the Netherlands:🐂 The Scottish Highland Cattle (Schotse Hooglanders)You do not need to go to Scotland to see these gentle, shaggy giants. The Dutch use them as natural lawnmowers to maintain local national parks. The Look: Massive, elegant horns and thick, wavy ginger coats. The Experience: They wander completely free across the coastal heather fields of Nationaal Park Zuid-Kennemerland. They are very docile and used to humans, making them perfect for close-up wildlife photography.🐑 The Round & Fluffy Texel SheepThe northern countryside and the island of Texel are completely ruled by sheep. The native Texel breed is famous worldwide for its stocky, fluffy appearance and sweet faces.Spring Magic: If you visit between March and May, the green polders are alive with thousands of energetic baby lambs jumping over narrow water ditches. Many local countryside farms let you walk straight into the barns to cuddle them!🐎 The Majestic Friesian HorsesOriginating from the northern province of Friesland, this is one of Europe's oldest and most striking horse breeds. The Look: Pitch-black coats, powerful builds, and incredibly long, flowing manes and tails. You will constantly see them grazing gracefully in fields right next to historic wooden windmills.🐄 The Iconic Black-and-White Frisian CowsYou cannot talk about the Dutch countryside without mentioning the classic Frisian dairy cow. These are the famous animals responsible for the country’s world-renowned Gouda and Edam cheeses. They dot the flat green landscape for miles, lazily chewing grass right along the canal banks.🪺 Giant White StorksLook up at the chimneys of old countryside cottages, church spires, or the tops of historic windmills, and you will likely spot a massive stick nest. White storks are deeply loved symbols of good luck in the Netherlands. You can easily spot them wading through wet grass fields looking for frogs.💡 Pro-Tips for Your Animal Spotting Trip🌾 Maintain a Safe Distance: While the free-roaming Highland cattle and wild ponies are gentle, always keep a respectful 25-meter distance to avoid startling them.🚪 Mind the Gates: When walking or cycling through public dunes where sheep and cattle graze freely, always ensure the swinging metal trail gates latch securely behind you.🧀 Visit a Care Farm (Zorgboerderij): Traditional cheese-making farms around areas like Zaanse Schans allow you to walk right into the paddocks to pet and feed their resident goats and calves for free.

Texel — An Island of Dunes, Lighthouses, and the Endless North Sea.
Texel (Texel Island) is the largest and most well-known Dutch island in the West Frisian archipelago. This destination is famous for its wide sandy beaches, picturesque dunes, cozy villages, and stunning nature that draws in travelers all year round.
The island perfectly blends natural tranquility with a traditional Dutch vibe. Here, you'll spot grazing sheep, historic lighthouses, bird sanctuaries filled with rare species, and miles of untouched North Sea coastline.
✨ What's especially impressive:
🏝 Expansive sandy beaches and dunes
🌊 The North Sea coast with its powerful waves
🗼 The iconic red Eierland Lighthouse
🐑 Thousands of sheep that have become the island's mascot
🦅 Dunes of Texel National Park
🚴 Hundreds of miles of biking trails
📸 Some of the most stunning seascapes in the Netherlands
The most overwhelming feeling you get here is a sense of pure freedom and wide-open spaces. You can stroll along the beaches for hours, watch the ocean, and soak in a kind of silence that's hard to come by in major European cities.
Fun fact: the island actually has a larger sheep population than human population, and its natural habitats are highly protected as one of the most vital ecosystems in the Netherlands for migratory birds.
💡 Good to know:
· 📍 Located in the northern Netherlands, in the North Sea
· ⛴ Accessible by ferry from Den Helder
· 🚴 The best way to explore the island is on a bike
· ⏰ We recommend setting aside 1–2 days to fully experience it
· 🌅 The most breathtaking sunsets can be caught on the west coast
· 📸 You'll get the best shots by the Eierland Lighthouse and nestled in the sand dunes
Nearby, you'll find the Wadden Sea nature reserves, the charming villages of Den Burg and De Koog, as well as numerous lookout points offering spectacular views of the North Sea.

The best place in Holland
#freehotelstay
I had a few spare days last autumn and decided to take a little holiday to the Dutch Island of Texel.
to get there you need to take a big ferry from the city of Den Helder. The boat ride is a great experience itself. Seeing the waves and seaguls is amazing. I visited De Koog and Oosterend. I loved it and I will definetely come back to Texel one day.
