“In Yuncheng, you might be stepping on the ridges once walked by Emperor Shun, feeling the Tang Dynasty breeze, and basking under the same sun as Yuan Dynasty painters.” 📷 This is Yuncheng, Shanxi, one of the prefecture-level cities with the highest concentration of national protected sites. ‼️ For those planning to visit, I highly recommend buying the Yuncheng Tourism Annual Card (128 RMB/person) or the Black Wukong Card (68 RMB/person). I drove from Xi’an to Yuncheng and here’s my itinerary: DAY 1️⃣ Xi’an 🚘 Tongguan 🚘 Pujindu Ruins (Yellow River Iron Ox) 🚘 Guanque Tower 🚘 Yuncheng City Center 1️⃣ Tongguan 🌟🌟🌟 (free admission), featuring an ancient city area and a museum with a distant view of the Yellow River. After Tongguan, there’s a street selling roujiamo (meat sandwiches) that tastes pretty good. 2️⃣ Pujindu Ruins (Yellow River Iron Ox) 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟, free admission. This spot is truly underrated. You can see the national treasure up close in the open air, and the Pujindu Ruins Museum clearly explains the history and significance of the Yellow River Iron Ox. Highly recommended. 3️⃣ Guanque Tower 🌟🌟. I visited because it’s included in the Black Wukong Card combo ticket and because of the famous Tang poem “Ascending Guanque Tower.” I wanted to experience the ancient feeling of climbing the tower and seeing the sun setting behind the mountains and the Yellow River flowing into the sea, inspiring one to climb higher for a broader view. The stairs downstairs are great for photos, and there’s an elevator to the top. 4️⃣ It’s about a one-hour drive from Guanque Tower to Yuncheng city center. DAY 2️⃣ Yuncheng city center, Yongle Palace, Guangrenwang Temple, and in the afternoon, the Salt Lake and Swan Habitat 1️⃣ Yongle Palace 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟. I strongly suggest visiting in the morning when sunlight streams through the windows into the main hall, illuminating the murals clearly—especially the 700-year-old Yuan Dynasty Taoist deity painting “Chaoyuan Tu” in the Wuji Hall. The murals are 5-6 meters tall and truly breathtaking. You’ll need 2-3 hours to fully appreciate it. Unfortunately, photography is not allowed. 2️⃣ Guangrenwang Temple 🌟🌟🌟🌟. One of the three and a half surviving Tang Dynasty wooden structures. Approaching it, you can feel the lingering grandeur of the High Tang era. It’s a great spot for photos. 3️⃣ Salt Lake Swan Habitat 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟. I recommend arriving around 4:30 PM. The sunset combined with the swans on the salt lake is a perfect match! Navigation: Salt Lake Swan Habitat, then walk 1.5 km to Swan Lake, or take a shuttle bus for 5 RMB/person. DAY 3️⃣ Jiexiu Guandi Temple, Panzhou Zen Master Pagoda, Yuncheng Museum 1️⃣ Jiexiu Guandi Temple 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟. The oldest Guandi Temple in China, over 1,400 years old. Many visit specifically to see the Qinglong mural and to take photos of the “Shenyong” plaque. The site is large, and the walk from the parking lot to the temple is a bit long. 2️⃣ Panzhou Zen Master Pagoda 🌟🌟🌟🌟, free admission. Located among residential houses, I personally think it’s worth a visit. This Tang Dynasty ancient pagoda is listed in “Famous Chinese Towers” and is the only circular pavilion-style brick pagoda from the Tang Dynasty in the country. 3️⃣ Yuncheng Museum 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟. A national first-class museum! Worth taking your time to explore. It also makes up for the no-photography rule at Yongle Palace’s Chaoyuan Tu mural.

1. Detailed introduction to Xiezhou Guan Di Temple The construction history of Xiezhou Guan Di Temple can be traced back to the Sui Dynasty, with a history of more than 1,400 years. During the Northern Song Dynasty, as the court increasingly honored Guan Yu and granted him higher titles, the Guan Di faith further developed. Xiezhou Guan Di Temple underwent large-scale repairs and expansions during the Northern Song’s Dazhong Xiangfu period (1008–1016) and the seventh year of Yuan You (1092). Xiezhou Guan Di Temple is generally divided into two parts: the southern section is the Brotherhood Garden, which is smaller and consists of structures such as the archway and Gentleman’s Pavilion, established in the 48th year of the Ming Wanli reign (1620). The northern section is the main temple. The main temple’s architectural layout follows the palace-style design principle of “front court and rear chambers” with a symmetrical central axis. Along the central axis from south to north are the Duan Gate, Zhi Gate, Wu Gate, Imperial Calligraphy Tower, Chongning Hall, and Chunqiu Tower. On both sides are the Bell Tower, Drum Tower, and Stele Pavilion, with long corridors on the east and west sides. There are 10 hall gates, 7 archways, 6 halls, 5 pavilions, 2 gazebos, and 1 screen wall in total. Inside the Brotherhood Garden, the main buildings such as the Brotherhood Archway and Gentleman’s Pavilion are arranged in a staggered manner, surrounded by lush ancient cypress trees, blending the lake and mountain scenery into one harmonious whole. In the main temple, the majestic buildings and towering pines complement each other, highlighting solemnity and grandeur. Chongning Hall is the main hall dedicated to Guan Di, located at the rear of the temple’s central axis, built in 1718. It is five bays wide and four bays deep, with stone pillars and a coiled dragon corridor outside, a double-eaved hip-and-gable roof, and a front moon terrace. Inside the hall is a shrine with a seated statue of Guan Yu in imperial attire, dignified and solemn. As the core hall of Xiezhou Guan Di Temple, Chongning Hall’s name originates from Emperor Huizong of the Song Dynasty’s honorary title for Guan Yu as Chongning Zhenjun. During the Jin and Yuan dynasties, since Guan Yu was titled king, many Guan temples were called Guan Wang Temples. However, in the late Ming Dynasty, Xiezhou Guan Temple began to be renamed Guan Di Temple, while the main hall dedicated to Guan Yu retained the name Chongning Hall. Chongning Hall is grand and imposing, over 20 meters tall, seven bays wide, six bays deep, with a surrounding sub-step platform. The hall’s roof features a double-eaved hip-and-gable design covered with brightly colored glazed tiles. Chunqiu Tower, also known as Linjing Pavilion, is located at the northern end of the rear palace and was rebuilt in the ninth year of the Qing Tongzhi reign (1870). It stands 23.4 meters tall, with a Yongding column waist wrapped in a flat base structure, and a two-story triple-eaved hip-and-gable roof. The second floor shrine houses a Ming Dynasty statue of Guan Gong reading the Spring and Autumn Annals at night. 2. Highlights 1. Dougong brackets The eaves of Chongning Hall use a five-step double-angled dougong bracket structure, painted in bright colors, fully displaying the grandeur of the main beams. 2. Plaque Under the outer eaves of Chongning Hall hangs a long rectangular plaque surrounded by dragon patterns, carved with the characters “Shen Yong” (divine bravery) in red with gold inlay, exquisitely ornate. The plaque’s blue background and gold characters are complemented by a vertical inscription in the center with the characters “Qinding” (imperially commissioned) in gold on a vermilion background, surrounded by golden dragons, highlighting the imperial style. 3. Beams and purlins The beams and purlins of Chongning Hall are intricately carved with various patterns, showcasing superb craftsmanship and complex, exquisite designs. The carvings include dragons, phoenixes, flowing clouds, flowers, figures, and animals, serving not only decorative purposes but also embodying rich cultural connotations and symbolic meanings. 4. Multicolored glazed tiles The color scheme of Chongning Hall follows traditional Chinese architectural color rules, with vivid but harmonious contrasts and smooth transitions. The glazed tiles on the hall’s roof mainly feature blue and green tones, creating a solemn and tranquil atmosphere. Other bright colors such as yellow and red are used as accents, making the color scheme more vivid and lively. Gold, white, and other neutral colors are also used to balance the overall palette, achieving a rich yet harmonious effect. 5. Stone carvings A circle of exquisite stone-carved railings surrounds the corridor pillars of Chongning Hall. The square pillars are carved with lifelike crouching lions, monkeys, and transformed child figures. The railing panels mainly depict various dragon shapes, as well as lions, tigers, qilin, figures, and floral patterns. The carving techniques combine deep relief and semi-round carving, blending an ancient, robust charm with strong local characteristics. 6. Stone steps The stone steps in front of Chongning Hall’s moon terrace are carved with patterns of curling grass, flowing clouds, and two dragons playing with a pearl. These delicate and refined patterns follow imperial palace standards, fully reflecting Guan Di’s noble status and the temple’s solemn structure. As recorded in the temple’s inscriptions: “The hall’s stone pillars are carved with dragons soaring, the temple’s appearance is magnificent, unmatched in the world.” The grandeur and delicacy of Chongning Hall make it worthy as the main hall of the largest existing Guan Di Temple. 7. Wood carvings The wooden shrine inside Chongning Hall is exquisitely carved, housing a seated statue of Guan Yu in imperial attire, with a brave and resolute yet dignified expression. The shrine’s exterior features carved beams and painted rafters, arranged ceremonial guards, and wood-carved clouds and dragons spiraling up the golden pillars, their fierce eyes meeting, perfectly matching Guan Yu’s heroic spirit. 8. Chunqiu Tower One of the core buildings, the “suspended beam and hanging pillar” structure on the second floor is a marvel of Chinese ancient architecture. Inside the tower is a seated statue of Guan Gong reading the Spring and Autumn Annals at night. 3. Tips 1. Tickets: Peak season (April–October) 60 yuan. Off-season (November–March) 50 yuan. Free for seniors over 60. Included in the Yuncheng tourism card. 2. Opening hours: Peak season: 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM (last entry at 5:50 PM) Off-season: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM (last entry at 4:50 PM) 3. Recommended visit duration is about 2 hours or more, as the Guan Di Temple is quite large. 4. Public transportation is well developed, with direct buses from the airport and high-speed rail station, and traffic is generally smooth. Taking the bus is recommended. Public parking lots are also available. 5. There is a temple fair every year on the first day of the lunar new year and on Guan Gong’s birthday.

Who says the Northeast is only about ice and snow? Who says Guangxi is only about Guilin’s scenery? These 8 destinations are either underrated or at their most beautiful season. You can get there by high-speed train within 2 hours or take a direct flight and then rent a car. There’s bustling city life and wild hidden spots, all in one trip offering completely different experiences. 01 Hezhou | Guangxi You have to get to Gupo Mountain early, before the mist clears, when the sound of the stream arrives first. I started hiking at 6:30 AM, and the whole forest was mine alone. At the mid-mountain waterfall, the mist hits your face and opens your pores. Before 9 AM, sunlight filters through the trees and hits the rocks like scattered gold. Dongtanling is even more spectacular. After a rain at dusk, a sea of clouds pushes up from the valley. Only a few old photographers with tripods are on the viewing platform. 📍 It takes about 40 minutes to drive from the park entrance to the top of Dongtanling. The road is narrow and winding. New drivers should be cautious. ⚠️ The temperature difference between the foot and the summit can reach 10℃. Bring a jacket so you don’t shiver like I did. 02 Anshan | Liaoning Qianshan is neither Jiangnan nor snowy mountains, but strangely, a thousand-year-old Taoist temple hides among the rocky peaks. I chose to start from Wuliang Temple, passing through Yixiantian, a narrow stone crevice you can only squeeze through sideways. It took two and a half hours to reach Wufoding. From the top, the whole mountain looks like a skeleton carved by an axe. 🍜 At the foot of the mountain is “Yufuyuan Dumpling House.” Their three-flavor dumplings have thin, translucent skins. Dip them in garlic paste for a fresh taste that makes you want to take some home. ⚠️ Qianshan is huge. Don’t try to see it all in one day. Pick the highlights. The cable car stops running after 4 PM. 🚄 It’s about a 30-minute taxi ride from Anshan Station to Qianshan’s main entrance, costing around 40 yuan. 03 Yuncheng | Shanxi Yuncheng Salt Lake looks like a giant palette spread across the land from afar. I always thought salt lakes were only in Qinghai, but Shanxi hides one too. 📍 Standing on the viewing platform on the east shore at 5 PM, the sun hangs low. The lake water bakes into a gradient of pink and light green. When the wind blows, the air carries a salty scent. ⚠️ Some people outside the salt lake try to lure visitors to “wild spots.” Don’t go. The official viewing platform is great. I recommend visiting the nearby Xiezhou Guandi Temple, a 20-minute drive from the salt lake. Its ancient architecture and paintings are exceptionally well preserved. 🚄 It costs about 20 yuan by taxi from Yuncheng North Station to the salt lake. 04 Qiandongnan | Guizhou You’ve probably seen countless beautiful photos of Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village at night, but the real-life impact is something photos can’t capture. 📍 Enter from the north gate and take the sightseeing bus to the viewing platform. After sunset, every household’s lights turn on one by one, making the whole mountain look like it’s crawling with fireflies. The next morning, head deep into the village before the tour groups arrive. Sit on the Wind and Rain Bridge and listen to a few elders playing the lusheng. 🍜 Try the sour fish at “Caotang Tea House.” The tomato sourness is just right. Paired with sticky rice, it’s amazing. ⚠️ Zhenyuan Ancient Town is much quieter than Xijiang, perfect for a slow family stroll. Zhaoxing Dong Village’s drum towers and Wind and Rain Bridge are more authentic. If you want to avoid crowds, Zhaoxing is the top choice. 05 Bayingolin | Xinjiang The vast grasslands of Bayinbuluke stretch as far as the eye can see. The winding sunset over the nine bends and eighteen turns is a must-see. Arrive at the viewing platform before 7:30 PM to secure a spot. Summer is busy, and if you come late, you’ll be stuck behind a crowd. 🍜 At the park entrance, they sell baked stuffed buns. The lamb filling sizzles with oil. One bite, and the crust is crispy while the meat is tender. ⚠️ The Taklamakan Desert and Tarim Poplar Forest are near Korla. If you’re driving, fill up your tank before taking the desert highway. From mid-October to early November, the poplar leaves turn yellow like splashed paint. It’s a sight you must see once in your life. 06 Xinxiang | Henan The water in Baoquan Tourist Area is as clear as emerald. I stood under the waterfall, feeling the cool spray on my face. 📍 Walk the cliffside trail with transparent glass railings. Below is the bright green pool. If you’re faint-hearted, your legs might go weak. Bali Valley has an even bigger drop. Passing through Tianhe Waterfall feels like entering a water curtain cave. ⚠️ Both spots are great for summer cooling, but weekends get crowded. Visit on weekdays or take an early bus. 🚄 There’s a direct tourist bus from Xinxiang East Station to the park. The trip takes about 1 hour. 🍜 Try “Henan Hui Mian” at Bali Valley’s entrance. The lamb broth is milky white, and the noodles are chewy. 07 Chongqing The Thousand-Hand Guanyin at Dazu Rock Carvings is breathtaking in person. The folds and ribbons on the statues look like they’re truly flowing in stone. 📍 Baodingshan is the highlight. Be sure to visit Beishan’s carvings too, which are less crowded and often missed. ⏰ Chongqing summers are scorching. Jinyun Mountain and Wulong Karst Tourist Area are natural air-conditioned spots. Walking under Wulong’s Three Natural Bridges makes you feel like an ant. ⚠️ The Lion Peak trail in Jinyun Mountain is steep. If your knees aren’t strong, take the cable car up. 🍜 After hiking, try “Nanshan Spring Chicken.” The numbing Sichuan peppercorns spread from your tongue to your ears. Paired with cold beer, it’s so relaxing you’ll sigh. 08 Songyuan | Jilin Chagan Lake’s winter fishing is famous, but summer at Chagan Lake is even more fun. 📍 Jinchan Island is hidden in the lake’s center, a 15-minute speedboat ride from the dock. There’s a small temple on the island. The stone steps at the entrance are polished shiny. Legend says touching them brings good luck. ⏰ On a July morning, standing by the lake, water birds flutter out of the reeds. A thin mist floats over the water, like a fairyland. ⚠️ In summer, don’t rent private cars to roam. There’s an official sightseeing bus for 10 yuan per person, very convenient. 🍜 The lakeside fish restaurant kills a bighead carp on the spot and stews it in a large iron pot. NO.1 Tianjin I arrived at the Italian Style Street at 3 PM that day, and there were more pigeons than people in Marco Polo Square. 🍜 Turn onto Ziyou Road, and the sizzling sound of jianbing guozi fills your ears. Mung bean batter is spread, two eggs are cracked on top, then brushed with sweet bean paste and chili. One bite, and it's perfectly crispy. ⏰ At 5 PM, as the sun sets, the villas in Wudadao are bathed in a warm orange glow, tree shadows sway on the walls, and an old man cycling by hums a tune. ⚠️ Don't go to Fantawild Adventure on weekends; the queues can be soul-crushing. If you're traveling with children, staying near Wudadao is most convenient. Minyuan Stadium is right outside, where kids can run wild on the lawn. 🚄 Taking a taxi from Tianjin Station to Italian Style Street costs just the starting fare, saving time and effort. NO.2 Qingyuan You have to go inside Lianzhou Underground River to truly understand its hidden wonders. 📍 The entrance is in Baoan Town. Book tickets online in advance, as they are much more expensive on-site. As you enter the cave, a cool breeze greets you. Stalactites hang down like inverted icicles. Take a boat along the underground river, and the sound of water echoes off the rock walls, creating a buzzing reverberation. 🍜 Don't forget to try a bowl of Lianzhou beef offal when you come out. The broth is rich, and the radishes soak up the flavor, bursting with juice when you bite into them. ⚠️ The temperature inside the cave is only about 18 degrees Celsius, so even in summer, bring a jacket, or you'll shiver. In the 24th year of Jian’an (219), Guan Yu was defeated and killed at Maicheng by Eastern Wu. Sun Quan sent his head to Cao Cao, who buried it with the honors of a feudal lord in Luoyang (today’s Guanlin in Luoyang). Guan Yu’s headless body was buried with the honors of a feudal lord in Zhangxiang, Dangyang, which is today’s Guanling. Together with the Guan Emperor Temple in Jiexian, Shanxi (a tomb for his clothes and official robes) and Luoyang’s Guanlin, it is known as one of China’s three great Guan temples. It’s not Xinjiang or Inner Mongolia, but a wild mountain deep in Shanxi. July is its most beautiful time of year, with thousands of acres of wildflowers blooming all at once. I ran for ten minutes on it and then just lay down in the flowers, not wanting to get up. Let’s start with the most hardcore fact—this mountain stands at 2,358 meters, the highest peak in southern Shanxi and the only place in North China with a fully preserved primeval forest. The forest coverage exceeds 95%, and the negative oxygen ion concentration is over 8,000 per cubic centimeter. What does that mean? Taking ten deep breaths here is better than breathing city air for a whole month. 🗺️ How to choose your route Here are two routes to pick from based on your energy level: ❶ Relaxed easy route (2–3 hours) Take the shuttle from the scenic area entrance → 10 minutes to the back mountain gate → horse carriage ride through the flower path → straight to the meadow core area → take photos, roll around, picnic → return the same way Perfect for families with kids, those who don’t want to hike hard, or a tight weekend day trip.
