II. Two Classic Routes (Choose as needed)
Option 1: One-day tour (Suitable for those with limited time who only want to see the lake view, not sunrise or sunset)
06:30 Depart from Lhasa (G109 National Highway, 240km one way, 4.5h)
09. 30 Cross Nagenla Pass (5,190m), stay for ≤15 minutes, avoid running or jumping
10. 30 Arrive at the scenic area entrance, transfer to the sightseeing bus to Tashi Peninsula (30 minutes)
11. 00–14:00 Explore core attractions on Tashi Peninsula
✅Must-see: Welcoming Stone (Husband and Wife Stone), Hand-Clasping Stone, Tashi Monastery, lakeshore boardwalk, Mani piles; view the Nyainqentanglha snow mountains from a distance, feed seagulls by the lake (¥5 for instant noodles)
14:00 Return trip, arrive back in Lhasa around 8:00 PM
⚠️Cons: 8–10 hours of total driving time, only 3 hours spent by the lake, no sunset or starry sky views
Option 2: Two-day in-depth tour (Best for photography, sunrise + sunset + Milky Way, highly recommended)
Day 1 (Stay in Damxung, recommended to alleviate altitude sickness)
Lhasa → Nyainqentanglha Observation Deck → Nagenla Pass → Namtso Tashi Peninsula → Watch sunset + photograph the Milky Way by the lake; stay at an oxygen-equipped hotel in Damxung County (altitude 4,200m). Staying in lakeside shacks is not recommended.
Day 2
Enter the scenic area early in the morning to photograph the sunrise over the lake; afterwards, you can choose to visit the Holy Elephant Heaven Gate; on the return trip, stop by Yangbajing Hot Spring, and return to Lhasa in the evening.
III. Transportation
1. Carpooling/Private Charter (Recommended)
· Carpooling: ¥200–300/person round trip from Lhasa; one-day tour group ¥300–500 (includes transport, excludes admission)
· 5-seater private charter: ¥800–1,200/day, stop for photos as you like, maximum flexibility
2. Self-driving
Sedans are perfectly fine; the entire route is paved. Four-wheel drive is needed for snowy sections in winter. Search for "Namtso Tourist Distribution Center" in your navigation app. Private cars can only park at the main entrance parking lot and cannot enter the lake area.
3. Public Transportation (Not recommended)
Lhasa East Suburb Bus Station → Damxung bus, then charter a car to enter the scenic area. Time-consuming and troublesome.
IV. Accommodation Options (Choose one)
1. Damxung County (Priority recommendation, altitude sickness-friendly)
Altitude 4,200m, with hot water, heating, and oxygen-equipped rooms. Facilities are well-developed, and it is a 1-hour drive from the scenic area entrance.
· Home Inn (Lhasa Damxung County Government Branch): Economy hotel with 24-hour oxygen supply, convenient parking, and high cost-performance.
· Baishichen Oxygen-Rich Hotel: New hotel, mountain view rooms, sufficient oxygen supply, ensures a good night's sleep.
· Namtso Shenyang Manor Hotel: Highly-rated, comfortable local hotel with complete facilities and stable oxygen supply.
2. Lakeside (Only for photography enthusiasts)
Tashi Peninsula shacks/tents: ¥80–180/person; no private bathrooms, temperatures below freezing at night, high risk of altitude sickness. Proceed with caution. Alternative: Namtso Yangdacang View Hotel (opposite the scenic area, relatively the best conditions).
V. Dining Guide
There are very few dining options inside the scenic area, and prices are high. It is recommended to bring your own dry food, hot water, chocolate, and beef jerky.
· Damxung County: Chuan Cai Yin Xiang (affordable Sichuan cuisine), Anduo Kitchen Buffet Hot Pot.
· Scenic Area Entrance: Tangji Baiweige, home-style dishes, rice noodles, suitable for a quick meal.
VI. Essential Gear & Altitude Sickness Survival Tips (Crucial)
Clothing (Cold all year round!)
Windbreaker + thickened down jacket, warm hat, gloves, thick socks; summer temperatures by the lake are around 5℃, and below freezing at night. Wind protection and warmth are the top priority.
Sun Protection & Supplies
Sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen, lip balm, face mask; buy oxygen bottles in Lhasa in advance, as the price inside the scenic area is 10 times higher than in the city. Prepare glucose, ibuprofen (for headaches), and Gaoyuan'an (altitude sickness medication).
Golden Rules for Altitude Sickness
1. You must acclimatize in Lhasa for 1–2 days before going to Namtso; do not rush there immediately upon arriving in Lhasa.
2. Do not run or jump at Nagenla Pass; walk slowly and talk less.
3. If you experience severe headaches or vomiting, descend to a lower altitude immediately; do not try to tough it out.
4. Try to stay in Damxung County; do not stay at the 4,718m lakeside accommodations.
VII. Photography & Avoiding Pitfalls
1. Best Season
· June–September: The lake water is deep blue, snow mountains are clear, suitable for regular sightseeing.
· November–March: Frozen blue ice, fewer people, great for photos, but roads are prone to icing and are often temporarily closed. Be sure to check road conditions before traveling.
2. Recommended Photo Spots
Tashi Peninsula boardwalk, by the Welcoming Stone, the highest point of the peninsula for reflections of the Nyainqentanglha snow mountains; the mirror effect is best when there is no wind on the lake in the evening.
3. Avoiding Pitfalls
· Negotiate the price for photos with yaks in advance (¥20–50) to avoid price hikes later.
· Drones are strictly controlled; flying drones in the lake area is prohibited and will result in confiscation.
· Make sure to catch the last sightseeing bus; do not stay on the peninsula alone.
· Do not trust low-priced tours on the side of the road; many involve dormitory-style accommodation with very poor conditions.
VIII. Trip Simplification Suggestions
· Just checking it off the list, limited time: Choose a one-day tour, leave early and return late.
· Want to see sunrise, starry skies, blue ice: Definitely choose a two-day tour + stay at an oxygen-equipped hotel in Damxung. The experience is doubled, and the risk of altitude sickness is lower.
