Sukhothai - Marvellous hidden destination
#sukhothai #thailand #buddhism #temple #
Sukhothai is home to the first Siamese/Thai civilisation and a trip to the old town makes it a wonderful opportunity for natural sightseeing and cultural experience, in an often ignored destination.
Getting There:
Best and cheapest way to visit Sukhothai is via rapid train from Bangkok to Phitsanulok which takes 4 hours and cost less than 500 bath. From there you simply need to go to the bus station with daily buses to Sukhothai Old Town for 60bath and 1.5hr.
Highlight:
The main attraction in Sukhothai old town is the Historical Park, a large ruin complex of the first Siamese civilisation. The park is nicely shaded and the Buddhist and Brahmanist ruins beautifully maintained. It’s possible to rent a bicycle just outside the gate to visit the park.
Hotel:
I highly recommend staying at Sukhothai Garden Hotel, located right in the middle of the town. Rooms go for ~1,000 bath, and the old couple managing the hotel is very friendly and helpful. Very clean rooms and breakfast is great! Choose an upper floor room for a nice view of mountain at sunset.
Food:
Sukhothai noodles are a famous dish in Thailand which is possible to find in several franchise outlets in the country. Here however restaurants offer the original version which is very delicious. Visit Jay Hae Sukhothai Noodle to try them
Suggestions:
-Best tour guide for historical park and Sukhothai culture: Buu Tananya. (IG: buutananya). She speaks perfect English and can suggest best places to appreciate the culture. Highly worth it
-Almsgiving in Wat Traphang Tong bridge. Very unique atmosphere the offering of food to monks there. Anyone can join in the ritual.
Full Moon night at Sukhothai

A truly magical place
#tripblazers
My visit to Wat Si Chum left me utterly captivated, as this ancient temple in Sukhothai Historical Park offers a serene retreat into Thailand's rich cultural heritage. Here are the top three things to see and do at Wat Si Chum:
Marvel at the Enigmatic Buddha Statue: The highlight of Wat Si Chum is undeniably the colossal Buddha statue enshrined within its main hall. The Phra Achana, a 15-meter-tall seated Buddha, is a masterpiece of Sukhothai artistry. The serene expression on the Buddha's face and the sheer scale of the statue evoke a sense of reverence and wonder. Observing this magnificent sculpture up close is a truly awe-inspiring experience.
Explore the Intricately Decorated Vihara: The Vihara, or assembly hall, surrounding the Phra Achana is adorned with exquisite stucco reliefs and decorative elements. Take your time to explore the intricate carvings depicting scenes from Buddhist mythology and daily life in ancient Thailand. The level of craftsmanship and attention to detail in these reliefs is remarkable, offering a glimpse into the artistic brilliance of the Sukhothai period.
Embrace the Tranquil Atmosphere: Wat Si Chum is not just a site for historical enthusiasts; it's also a place of tranquility and spiritual serenity. The temple's peaceful surroundings, shaded by ancient trees, create a serene atmosphere perfect for meditation and contemplation.

Xichun Temple has a huge sitting Buddha statue with a magical print.
Xichun Temple, located outside the ancient city, has the style of Nan Buddhism and is the most mysterious temple in the Sukhothai temple. At the entrance to the temple, you can see the restored architectural map. The biggest attraction of the temple is a huge sitting Buddha statue in the temple with a height of about 15 meters. The fingers of the Buddha are gold-plated and the lines of the fingers are elegant and smooth. Sitting Buddha shines in the sunshine and slowly shines. If you have plenty of time, you can sit at the Buddha statue for a while and feel the history and the passing of time.
Wat Sa Si Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in May)
Wat Sa Si
Sukhothai attractions include another beautiful temple with a great atmosphere, Wat Sa Si, located within the Sukhothai Historical Park. The temple's highlight is the largest pond with a prominently situated chapel that is considered the highlight of this place. Inside the temple, there are many archaeological sites, such as bell-shaped stupas, a chapel in the middle of the water, and many other interesting things. There is also a plaster Buddha statue in the Maravijaya attitude in front of the vihara and small stupas that are a mix of Srivijaya art and Lankan style. It can be said that it is a Sukhothai Phitsanulok tourist spot with very good views and atmosphere.
Wat Sa Si
Wat Sa Si is built on a small island in the lake. The Buddha's body is full, the lines are smooth and soft, the right hand hangs down, the fingertips are slightly raised, and the left hand is raised, making a gesture of preaching. Next to the two huge bell-shaped pagodas is the famous walking Buddha bronze statue, with a full and light posture, beautiful and beautiful, exceptionally intoxicating.

The Shaxi Temple is surrounded by water and is a style-style Sukhothai-style temple. Shaxi Temple is built on a small island in the heart of the historical park. There is a beautiful walking Buddha in the temple. The walking Buddha is unique to Sukhothai and is a special idea of Thai artists. The Buddha's left foot is stepped on the ground, the right foot is raised, the left hand is lifted up in front of the chest, and the right arm is hung on the body, naturally swinging, showing a vivid posture that stops momentarily while walking. There is a straw shed near the temple, and the locals will bring food to picnic here, very lively. If you are interested, you can rent a motorcycle and hang out in the park.

Wat Mahathat
is located in the middle of the central district of Sukhothai Historical Park. It is the largest temple and site in the historical park and the most representative temple complex in the historical park. Wat Mahathat is the epitome of the entire historical park. The complete palace, sitting Buddha, standing Buddha, relief sculpture, etc., vividly show the prosperity and prosperity of the Sukhothai Dynasty. The high and low ruins of the ruins, the large and small temple pillars, and the tall and old trees that are intertwined, tell the history of ruthlessness and vicissitudes.
Wat Mahathat, the oldest temple in Ayutthaya.
This temple is located in the center of the city of Ayutthaya. It is also the largest ancient building complex. Many travel agencies will come to this temple.
Tickets are 50 baht and the opening hours are 8am-6pm.
15th century Thailand, the national treasury is sufficient, the people live and work in peace, just did not develop military, so that it was invaded by neighboring Myanmar, not only stole 170 kilograms of gold foil, but also set fire to the entire monastery. The fate is similar to China's Yuanmingyuan. After the victory of the war in
Burma, the temple and the Buddha statues were completely destroyed, destroying the status of religion in people's minds, thus undermining the politics, beliefs and indigenous culture of the Ayutthaya Dynasty.
So the head of the Buddha here has been cut off, leaving only the body, and the statue in the middle is free from heights.
This "tree hug Buddha" is a representative of the Great Wall ruins. Many people are looking at him at a glance, and some people call it "eternal smile."
Mahatai Temple is located in the center of the ancient city of Sukhothai and is the royal ancestral temple.
Wat Mahathat is the center of the city. It was built from the king of Indra and was completed in 1345 in the period of King Litai, belonging to the royal ancestral temple. The main tower of the
Mahatai Temple is a vegan Thai-style pagoda with a lotus-like shape on the upper part. This was reconstructed by Li Taiwang. It was originally a Khmer-style pagoda. Li Taiwang did not want to be high. Under the influence of cotton, the original Khmer tower was wrapped up and covered with a vegan Thai-style stupa. This example of not destroying the works of the predecessors can be seen in Thailand at the time, because the Thais believe that destroying the temple or the Buddha statue is against God. Not respectful.
