I visited the Yakult factory in Kitakami, Iwate, and it was so much fun! Right from the entrance, there was a wide display of Yakult from around the world, and it was fascinating just to see how the packaging differs from country to country. There were lots of exclusive designs for overseas markets like Korea, Thailand, and the Netherlands, and it really showed me how much Yakult is loved all over the world. The museum was filled with not only Shirota strain Lactobacillus products, but also a wide selection of Yakult Group products like ramen, noodles, soy milk drinks, and vegetable juice. I was amazed at how wide the range of products they offer. The exhibits were beautiful and the photos were great! There was also a commemorative photo spot, and a great way to add the date of your visit. It was a very interesting factory tour that was fun for both families and adults alike.

Last year, I visited the cherry blossom tunnel, a popular spot at the Taipei exhibition, on the first day of full bloom. The two-kilometer-long tunnel was bathed in sunlight filtering through the blossoms, creating a breathtakingly beautiful, continuous sense of light and transparency. The only downside was that it rained the night before, leaving the path muddy and making it difficult to walk and take photos, but it was still a very beautiful place.

🏔️ Unseen Kitakami: When cherry blossoms have yet to bloom, but the forest begins to enchant 🌸 When mentioning Kitakami City in Iwate Prefecture, most people think of the Tenshochi Park, home to over 10,000 cherry trees and ranked as one of the top three cherry blossom viewing spots in Tohoku. However, if you arrive a bit early and the cherry blossoms are still buds, don’t be disappointed! Nature here offers a rare gem after the snow melts. 🧘♂️ Zazensou: The meditative flower amidst the snow Our first stop was to see Zazensou (座禅草), or Eastern Skunk Cabbage, a fascinating plant with deep red leaves encircling yellow stamens, resembling a "meditating monk," hence its Japanese name. What’s special is that the plant generates heat up to $25^C$ to melt the surrounding snow and emits a unique scent to attract insects, perfectly embodying its floral meaning of "quiet waiting." 🤍 Mizubasho: The queen of the wetlands at Iwasawa Station Next, we traveled to Iwasawa Station (a charming JR station accessible with a JR Pass) to visit the Mizubasho (水芭蕉) garden, or Asian Skunk Cabbage. These pure white flowers, resembling peace lilies, bloom amidst clear waters at the foot of Mount Hayama. The atmosphere is serene, with the sound of melting snow from the mountain nourishing the wetlands. The best time to visit is late April, when the white flowers contrast beautifully with the fresh green leaves. Although the cherry blossoms didn’t show up as planned, witnessing these small flowers pushing through the snow to bloom, along with the warm hospitality of the locals, made this Kitakami trip truly special. Clean and comfortable

Located just a short walk from Kitakami Station, where the Shinkansen "Hayabusa" stops, this hotel is easily accessible via a covered walkway, ensuring you stay dry even on rainy days. Having just opened this year, the interior is exceptionally clean. From the windows, you can enjoy the sight of Shinkansen trains passing by, but surprisingly, the noise is minimal, allowing for a peaceful and relaxing stay. The bathwater is slightly on the hotter side, which was perfect for me, providing a truly rejuvenating experience. Breakfast is served buffet-style at 1,800 yen for guests (2,000 yen for non-guests or same-day visitors). The selection is just right—not overwhelming—and everything was delicious, leaving me completely satisfied. The room wear is a comfortable two-piece set with pockets, making it very convenient. Overall, it was an extremely pleasant stay.

Iwate Prefecture. Tucked away in the mountains, beyond the Geto Kogen Ski Resort, is the Geto Onsen open-air bath. It costs 700 yen to bathe in any of the seven baths. The main bath is Oyu, which is incredibly hot, straight from the source. It was 47 degrees on the day we visited, but apparently it was 49 degrees the day before. The front desk explained, "It's hot, and even people who couldn't walk can now walk. It's hot, but you can just pour the water over yourself, so please come and enjoy it." I managed to get in despite my broken left leg in a traffic accident. There is a mixed bath, but there are also women-only times. I went at the end of summer, and because it's in the mountains, the breeze was cool, so I really enjoyed the hot springs. #SecretHotSpring #MixedBath #GetoOnsen

That’s why I always say, better to be late than early when it comes to sakura season! To catch the cherry blossoms in full bloom, I timed my trip just right to be in Aomori’s Hirosaki, starting my sakura chase from the north and making my way down to Hakodate. Each year, sakura bloom dates can shift by about a week. Luckily, I arrived in Kitakami Tenshōchi Park just as the sakura snow was happening. Half of the petals were still clinging to the trees, and half were carpeting the ground, blowing around like a soft pink cloud in the wind. It was one of the most breathtaking sights I’ve ever seen. 🌸🌬️ To get there: Take the JR Line to Kitakami Station, then walk just 5 minutes to the riverbank. To catch the cherry blossoms in Aomori Hirosaki, I decided to start my cherry blossom chase in Kitakami, eventually making my way to Hakodate. Every year, cherry blossoms bloom with a one-week fluctuation period, and I was lucky enough to catch the sakura blizzard at Kitakami Tenshōchi. At this moment, some petals were still on the trees while others were falling to the ground, gently blown by the breeze. It was an incredibly beautiful sight. 🌸✨ How to Get There: Transportation: Take the JR Line to Kitakami Station, and it’s a 5-minute walk to the riverside. After crossing the bridge, you will see rows of cherry trees on the opposite bank. Suggestion: If possible, spend a night in Kitakami.
