Place to go if you want lazy vacation. Relax near sea. Beautiful beach. Long and clean. Clean water. Can rent sun umbrella and lounger or just buy it in local supermarket. A lot of boat trips. Can go and see Itaka - place of born of Odyssey. Or just go to nice beaches. Scala is a small village. A lot of cafes and restaurants. Traditional greek food. Good and tasty. A lot if shops with souvenirs. Excellent money vs value choice. Definitely recommend to visit this place.

Old Valsamata, near St Gerasimos Monastery, Kefalonia Island ❤️ A once prosperous settlement which was badly damaged in the 1953 earthquake then abandoned by the inhabitants, leaving a ghost village which is absolutely amazing, tranquil, atmospheric, and a little spooky but absolutely worth a visit. Children must be supervised at all times as some of the buildings are unsafe and there are numerous deep and sometimes open areas. Mountainous Kefalonia, the largest of the Ionian group of islands, is a justifiably popular beach holiday destination. Although the island is dominated by Mount Ainos, and pine-clad hills that run down to the sea, it’s the sandy beach coves lapped by the turquoise waters that draw the most visitors. The best way to enjoy the top beaches on Kefallonia is to book your accommodation so that some of the many enchanting beaches are within easy reach. If you arrive by ferry at the capital, Argostoli, head south for the nearby beaches of Makris Gialos and Platis Gialos, which end at the tiny islet of Tourkopodaro. Makris Gialos has an area of sun lounges ideal for soaking up the sun, but there is jetski hire if you feel like being more active. The smaller Platis Gialos is quieter and less developed than its neighbour. Both beaches have bars and you will find a choice of excellent villa accommodation at nearby Lassi. Myrtos is a 1 km arc of pulverised white shell-sand between two headlands, water a violent turquoise because of the limestone flour. The beach is free, the descent road is 17 hairpins—don’t attempt in a bus. Spent 90 minutes, then drove 40 min north to Assos, parked free at the village entrance, walked 10 min down to the isthmus: a sandbar joining the cypress-covered headland where a 16th-century Venetian castle sits. Assos has two tavernas (€9 moussaka, card ok), no entry fee to the village or isthmus. Mistake: I did Myrtos at noon first—no shade, the reflected light off white pebbles burns; 9 am or 5 pm. Second mistake: swimming at Myrtos in wind—rips form fast, red flag ignored by tourists = lifeguard whistle. Worth it? Yes: two of Greece’s most photographed spots, both free, for the price of fuel and a sandwich. Myrtos is better from above; Assos is better from the water. Question: is the famous Myrtos overrated because the sand is coarse and the rip dangerous, or does the color alone justify the hype?

After visiting the nearby Church of Santa Croce (see reviews), I returned yesterday afternoon to revisit this monument and pay tribute to the victims of Nazi brutality. The monument honors the sacrifice of the Italian soldiers and officers of the Acqui Division stationed on the Greek island of Cephalonia. Following the armistice of September 8, 1943, they refused to surrender to the Germans. After a desperate struggle with minimal help from the new Allies, they were massacred in violation of any international codes. The monument features a slab depicting the profile of the Greek island. In front of it lies a stone from one of the cemeteries where the martyrs rest, which yesterday was nearly hidden under flowers. A stark reminder to never forget these horrors!

Anyone with a pet at home knows the feeling: you travel while already planning the day you'll be back. Since I can't bear being away from my four-legged companion for long, I put together a very concise five-day itinerary for Greece, focusing solely on the Ionian Islands. No rushing around to tick off a list of tourist landmarks—just some time to breathe, observe, and do a bit of sketching in my notebook. My first stop was Zakynthos. The sea there is a shade of blue I was certain only existed in a palette of gouache paints. I visited the famous Navagio (Shipwreck) Beach from the top of the cliffs. It's breathtaking in an almost surreal way, but what truly resonated with me was a simple moment: on the way, I saw two local dogs playing by the water's edge, completely indifferent to the crowds of tourists. I felt a sudden, sharp pang of homesickness, but it was one of those spontaneous moments that makes a journey truly beautiful. Afterward, I took a boat to Kefalonia, which is much quieter and less crowded. It was exactly what I needed. I spent an afternoon rowing through the Melissani underground lake. Sunlight streams through a breach in the rock, creating a dance of shadows on the water that left me mesmerized. I spent quite a while there trying to capture that shifting gradient of light in my sketchbook. For anyone who, like me, prefers slower, shorter trips, these two islands offer the perfect escape. I didn't need to race through all eight famous islands on the map to feel like the trip was worth it. Like a tiny swimming pool hewn out of the rock and with a small pebbly beach. The scenery is one of the most beautiful on the island: the cliff, the small pebble cove, the blue sea, the walkway leading to the beach, all beautiful. Spaces are limited, but if there is no room in the cove you can stand on the steps in the shade of the trees. There is a nice restaurant just above. Parking along the street St Jerusalem Beach Further along the coastline from Alaties Beach you will come across St Jerusalem Beach. Beautiful clear waters and very secluded beach, but very rocky. · You may need to wear water shoes for the pebbles. *Get there early if you want beds and an umbrella. · Great taverna on the beach

There is also the Spur-thighed tortoise, this is a little smaller at 300mm maximum length. The third and smallest is Hermann's tortoise, which can achieve 250mm in length and is the only species present on Kefalonia HERMANN'S AND MARGINATED TORTOISES This wonderful tortoise is the only wild tortoise on Kefalonia. Their high domed shell or carapace can be up to 250mm in length and can be a variety of colours. The carapace can be yellow, ochre, beige or pale orange with extensive black markings. The hatchlings have fewer contrasting markings which develop into the adult colouring after their second year. Mating takes place in spring and summer and females can lay up to 3 clutches of 8 eggs throughout this period. The little ones emerge in September. I look after the tortoises and have many hatchlings every year. These tortoises will be realised back on the island in the National park 🏞️ Mount Anios #Herman tortoise

Walk past the red villa (Rosa) and carry on walking on the road until you see the walking trail signs on your right. Follow the trails along the coastal path to see the sea caves, maybe the Monk 🦭 seals and just stunning pine trees. You will need sturdy shoes and water for both yourself and your dog 🐕. My dogs were fine off the lead but take them just in case you come across any goats 🐐. Bring some refreshments do you can sit at one of the many hidden coves. Lots of areas to swim and snorkel.

Eglina Beach is located 6 km south of Argostoli, on the southwestern coast of Kefalonia. It is a sheltered bay with gradually sloping beach that stretches for 100 meters. It is ideal for children to play and is perfect for a relaxed stay and a refreshing dive. The rocks outcrops scattered around the cove, make it an ideal spot for snorkeling. There is no water sport center, but it is an organized beach with a beach bar, sun beds and umbrellas. To get to Eglina, you pass through Minies village, an area which is somewhat developed but it offers the basic facilities. Situated next to the runway it’s fascinating to see the planes land and take off. Come and sea the famous sea turtles (loggerhead) in Kefalonia. The loggerhead turtles live all year in the harbour in Argostoli the capital. I was lucky enough to go swimming in St Thomas beach and saw this amazing turtle. There is a charity that work with the turtles and never try to feed or touch the turtles. #kefalonia #seaturtle

Great one bedroom house in the traditional village of Keramies on Kefalonia

#falladventures a great beach that’s next to the runway in Kefalonia. I love the beach due to its shallow waters and sand. Out of season it’s great to take my dogs for a run and a swim. This beach has a beach bar and sun beds during the summer season making it ideal for families. You also get to see and hear the planes land or take off overhead. A nice hidden beach mainly used by locals

#mediterranean The lighthouse of Saint Theodoroi in Kefalonia lies on an artificial peninsula close to Argostoli, the island's capital. It is a white, circular structure made up of 20 columns, and its tower is 8 meters tall. The building has a rather simple architectural design reminiscent of the Doric style, and it shines white light that reaches five miles. It showcases a unique layout, as it comprises an older windmill enclosed by pillars without featuring a room for a lighthouse keeper. It got its name from the chapel of Saint Theodoroi, which lies nearby. The entrance is free and it is so beautiful to walk along. #greece #kefalonia
