Wandering alone through the stone-paved paths and tranquil alleys felt like traveling through time—a perfect way to soak in the historic atmosphere in peace. 🎐 Ofusa Kannonji Temple | A Summer Symphony of 2,500+ Wind Chimes Ofusa Kannon is an iconic summer destination in Nara! The entire temple is adorned with thousands of wind chimes that tinkle soothingly in the breeze, creating a truly healing experience. You can catch this beautiful display every year from June to August for the ultimate summer vibe~ 🔥 Although the daytime heat can be intense, if you manage to wake up early, the cool morning breeze combined with the peaceful serenity is incredibly rewarding. 🚗 It's only about a 1-hour drive from Osaka, making it easy to hit up multiple spots even if you only have half a day~ This quick summer getaway to Nara was so relaxing. Café Hisohiso is a hidden cafe located a 30-minute walk from Kintetsu Miminari Station. There is an old gate with a rabbit sign. Just past the gate is the cafe. As the name suggests, this cafe is hidden away in nature and serves cute baked goods and desserts. The interior of the cafe is decorated with dried flowers, creating a stylish space. This is a large shrine located in Kashihara City, Nara Prefecture. In fact, its history of construction is relatively recent, dating back to the Meiji Period. However, its origins date back to the distant past, to Emperor Jimmu, the first emperor of Japan. A petition from private citizens was filed on the site where Emperor Jimmu's palace is said to have stood, and Emperor Meiji, inspired by this petition, founded the shrine. From Kintetsu Nara take the Kashihara line to Yagi-Nishiguchi (~30 min, ~470 yen IC), 5 min walk; or JR from Nara to Unebi (~40 min) then 8 min walk. Street is free, 24h; the Kawai Residence (old sake brewery, 100 yen cash, 10–16:30, Mon close) and the Imai Machiya Museum (free, 9–12) are the two indoor stops. I went 8:40 a.m. weekday: off at Yagi-Nishiguchi, crossed the moat bridge while the lane shadow still lay east, walked the grid counterclockwise from Shonen-ji. With no signboards and not even on Google Maps yet, the only thing marking the traditional house cafe "Saryo Hakutai" is the white curtain hanging out front. It opened around Golden Week last year🎊 Since they don't list their exact address on Instagram (though there is a map link), I’ll keep it a secret too. I highly recommend wandering through the town to discover it yourself. It's located where a certain shop used to be, so those in the know might figure it out🤭 The cafe is run by "Hakutai," an all-around production company based in Osaka City. They handle urban development and design, frequently partnering on projects in Nara’s Uda and Kashihara cities✍️ Their specialties include udon made with carefully crafted dashi broth, alongside authentic Yoshino kuzumochi (arrowroot cake). They also offer seasonal dishes and Western-style sweets. Prices are what you'd expect in a tourist area😌 This time, I tried their summer-exclusive set menu. It featured sudachi udon as the main dish, kuzumochi for dessert, and a "Chilled Plum Drop Black Tea Soda" to drink☀️ The dashi, brewed from bonito and kelp, is salt-free and super healthy. The sudachi udon is served cold with ice, topped with a beautiful ring of premium A-grade sliced sudachi from Tokushima🍊 The low-sodium, light dashi pairs perfectly with the perfectly firm udon noodles. The refined tang of the sudachi is incredibly refreshing and delicious. Biting into the sudachi slices adds a pleasant hint of bitterness from the rind, which is also fantastic🥰 True to its Yoshino Honkuzu name, the kuzumochi is amazingly chewy and jiggly! Try it plain first, then generously drizzle on the kinako (roasted soybean flour) and kuromitsu (black syrup)! The salted cherry blossom garnish was saltier than I expected🌸 Then there’s the drink. The candied plums, syrup, and plum drops are all made from fruit harvested from the plum tree in their very own courtyard. If you hustle out the West Exit of Kintetsu Kashiharajingu-mae Station, you can reach "Menya Ichibiri" in just 30 seconds. As the flagship store of the Ichibiri Group, they serve up an incredible seafood and tonkotsu (pork bone) soy sauce ramen🍜 Their broth is a double soup: a rich animal-based paitan broth made by simmering domestic pork and chicken for 10 hours, blended with a seafood stock that extracts umami from six types of fish, including Chiba-sourced dried black-backed sardines and mackerel flakes. You can enjoy three styles of noodles here—ramen, tsukemen (dipping noodles), and mazesoba (mixed noodles)—and they carefully select a different type of noodle for each dish💡 For the ramen, they use whole-wheat, highly hydrated, medium-thick straight noodles. The aroma of the wheat and the chewy texture are amazing♪ This time, I went with the "Special" which comes with double the bamboo shoots, 2 extra slices of chashu pork, and a seasoned soft-boiled egg☺️ I'm totally obsessed with the soup, so my personal style is to dunk every topping into the broth first. Upgrading to the "Special" lets you fully enjoy the contrasting textures of the noodles and the various toppings🥰 I also ordered the "Sudachi Rice" because a follower told me how good it is. Squeezing the sudachi citrus over sesame-salt rice creates an irresistible balance of saltiness and acidity... plus, it pairs insanely well with the soup🥹 There's usually a bit of a wait, but it's so delicious that you'll completely understand why people line up for it. I visited Horiuchi Fruit Garden's new cafe parlor, "Horiuchi Fruit Garden TEA PARLOUR," located on the 2nd floor of Aeon Mall Kashihara, in the space formerly occupied by Marufuku Coffee Shop! I arrived around noon, and there were many people waiting in front of the store, showing just how popular it is! 👀 This time, I tried their signature afternoon tea! It's a three-tiered set, featuring sweets and savory items made with plenty of Horiuchi Fruit Garden's signature fruits. 🍇🍓🍎 The scones on the top tier are supervised by the popular Osaka shop "Tawanico." They're crispy on the outside and moist on the inside, with a gentle flavor that showcases the quality of the ingredients. ☺️ The clotted cream and strawberry (or something similar) sauce were also delicious! 🍓 The middle tier features cheesecake, pound cake, and pie, served with fruits like strawberries and grapes. The small tart topped with banana was particularly tasty! 🍌 The bottom tier is savory. The afternoon tea consisted of quiche and fruit salad. Horiuchi Fruit Farm is known for its persimmons, and the persimmons in the salad were incredibly sweet and tender – absolutely delicious! 🥳 The tea, an essential part of afternoon tea, is from 'TEA ROOM KIKI,' a tea specialty shop with its main store in Kyoto. It's served in authentic British 'Burleigh' teaware. 🫧🫖 The tea is free-flowing (90-minute limit), with 10 different teas offered randomly each time. Enjoy the fragrant flavored teas combining fruits and herbs! 🥰 They also offer parfaits, pancakes, quiche and curry lunch sets, and French toast available only in the morning! Hearing that the Nara branch of the popular Okayama-born book cafe "Unomachi Coffee" has introduced a new tofu-based lunch menu, I headed down to Imai-cho in Kashihara City🚶 The new offerings are the "Agedashi Tofu Set Meal" and the "Tofu Rice Bowl Set," and I went with the Agedashi Tofu Set Meal! To be completely honest, this was my third lunch of the day...😇 The set meal centers around agedashi (deep-fried) tofu topped with plum and whitebait, accompanied by boiled tofu, pork miso soup, rice, and pickles. The softly rising steam gives off such a comforting vibe💭 The tofu is soft enough to pick up with chopsticks (if you're gentle!). You can enjoy the crispy batter of the agedashi, or let it soak up all that delicious dashi broth—both ways are super tasty〜♪ My photography skills don't really do it justice, but the pork miso soup was packed with ingredients. Approaching Toichi Pancake, the exterior walls are draped with greenery and flowers. Neon lights are shaped into cute pancake designs, and photos of seasonal limited-edition desserts are displayed by the entrance. Pushing the door open, the air is filled with the aroma of butter and coffee. The high ceilings, warm lighting, and the framed illustrations and dessert photos on the walls all make you feel like you aren't just here to eat sweets, but to experience a kind of "kawaii culture." The staff are busy preparing drinks, while customers chat softly, take photos, and share their desserts. I ordered the seasonal "Whole Peach Pancake." When it arrived at the table, I was truly left speechless. The pancake was as fluffy as a cloud.
