#summervacay Originally, I just wanted to check out that peculiar, long beach strip, Chesil Beach, extending away from the mainland behind Weymouth on the map. So, I simply decided to book a stopover here on my journey south, and it turns out this little town held quite a few unexpected delights! 🥰 I only found out upon arriving that Weymouth was the host city for the sailing events during the 2012 London Olympics! That immediately created a sense of familiarity and connection. Moreover, as an important naval defense base from the Middle Ages right up to modern times, it still has remnants of WWII military fortifications that were in use even then. During the D-Day landings, Portland Island, just south of Weymouth, was also one of the crucial assembly and departure points. I've visited quite a few "once-glorious" seaside resort towns in the UK, and while each has its own character, they generally feel quite similar. However, Weymouth stands out! With its subtropical vegetation and colorful old harbor buildings, it truly has the distinct feel of a charming European continental seaside town. On the south coast of Great Britain, Weymouth is like a pearl gently wrapped in time, exuding a unique and charming luster. When you first arrive in Weymouth, the first thing that catches your eye is the clear and boundless beach. The fine sand glistens with golden light in the sun, like the tiny treasures of nature. Walking along the coastline, the sea breeze with a salty and wet breath blows away the haze in your heart, making you want to be one with the sea and sky. The harbor of Weymouth is the soul of the town. The old boats are moored on the shore, and the mottled paint on the hulls tells the story of past voyages. Walking along the harbor trail, the colorful houses on the street look like they came out of a fairy tale, and behind every window is the warmth of life. Here, you can taste fresh seafood just caught from the sea, and the tender fish melts in your mouth with the taste of the sea. Every bite is a tribute to the ocean's gift to Weymouth. History lovers should not miss Nothe Fort in Weymouth. This ancient fortress stands by the bay and has witnessed countless changes. Walking into the castle, the stone walls and gun ports seem to whisper about past wars and defenses. Touching the mottled bricks and stones, you can travel through time and feel the grandeur of the past. If you love natural scenery, you might as well go to Radipole Lake. This is a paradise for birds, and the tranquil lake reflects the sky and reeds, like a natural ink painting. When the sun sets, the afterglow spills over the lake, sparkling and breathtakingly beautiful. When night falls, the streets of Weymouth are lit up, and the bars are filled with melodious music and laughter. At this time, find a small shop on the street, order a cup of fragrant English tea or a local malt beer, watch the people coming and going outside the window, and enjoy this romantic night unique to Weymouth. In Weymouth, time seems to slow down, every moment is worth remembering, and every encounter is an unexpected encounter with beauty.

This area is also a paradise for fossil enthusiasts, with Charmouth and Lyme Regis being two renowned fossil hunting spots where dinosaur-era fossils are frequently discovered, evoking a deep sense of reverence for the history of this land. 🌅 Visitor Information The Jurassic Coast is worth visiting year-round, with each season offering its own unique charm. There are multiple trails and viewpoints along the coast, perfect for hiking and scenic photography. It's recommended to wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a camera, as you'll want to capture every magnificent moment~

Not the first time I’ve stayed at the Alexandra hotel and definitely not the last, it is such a great location right on the beach and is also close by to all the local shops and restaurants. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A peaceful coastal escape — the perfect Dorset getaway! 🌊🫧 We had such a lovely few days at The Garden Room – Lynwood Lodge! The place is beautifully kept, peaceful, and has everything you need for a relaxing break. We spent most days in the hot tub and enjoyed exploring the nearby coastal paths. We walked to The Smugglers Inn on Saturday in the wind and rain — totally worth it for the views and atmosphere — and then ventured down to Ringstead Beach the next day. Even though the café was closed, the walk back along the coast was stunning. The Garden Room itself is spotless, cosy, and perfectly private, with gorgeous views that make it hard to leave. Thank you for providing such a welcoming space — we’ve made lovely memories here and would absolutely stay again. 💚

Train to Weymouth

From Bristol, take the train to Weymouth (2.5 hours, day return tickets available). After getting off, you're in the city center. I had lunch at a fried chicken place opposite the train station – £15 for 8 large chicken legs and 2 Cokes. The prices were great – see picture 10. Then take the X54/30 bus, which takes about half an hour (note that buses run every 1-2 hours, so check the schedule in advance). When we went, there were no suitable buses, so we took an Uber for a little over £20! The X54 is a double-decker bus with an open-top sightseeing upper deck. The scenery along the English countryside is beautiful – see picture 9. The seaside is also stunning, with its gradient hues resembling jelly and the white cliffs – a double treat! Highly recommended!

Portland UK is an island off the coast of Dorset, England, connected to the mainland by Chesil Beach. Geography The island is joined to the mainland by a narrow strip of land (a tombolo)in this case, the pebble ridge of Chesil Beach. Steeped in maritime history and heritage, there are museums, castles and not one but three lighthouses to explore. Portland Museum: Located in a historic stone cottage, it covers the island's history of quarrying, smuggling, and maritime life. Portland Harbour is one of the largest man made harbours in the world.

Starting at the library this walk affords fine views across the harbour and the marina. The ferry leaves here for the Channel Islands. In my youth I travelled to Jersey on the ship. Easier these days to get the fast catamaran. Much quicker. Plenty to see and do for all the family. Great shopping and good pubs en route. As I write this synopsis we are well into autumn so expect a rain shower in places. Weymouth boasts a long beach and the affords plenty of opportunities for safe swimming and water sports. Currently a section of the footpath is closed due to essential path maintenance and roadworks.

#mytraveldiary Ambience & Setting Perched on clay cliffs above Portland Harbour in Weymouth, Dorset, Sandsfoot Castle is a crumbling Tudor artillery fort whose silhouette is drawn against sea and sky. Even in ruins, the stone walls, broken battlements, and gardens below evoke centuries of salt-air, storm-spray, gull cries, and shifting tides. The views across the bay to Portland and the harbour are wide and open; pathways and gardens make the place feel both melancholic and alive.  ⸻ Highlights • Built under Henry VIII (~1540) as part of coastal defences to protect against invasion.  • Rectangular blockhouse, octagonal gun-platform (now partially lost to erosion), earthwork defenses, and walkways added in recent times to help visitors trace its original form.  • Sandsfoot Gardens below offer landscaped beauty, ponds, and views from garden terraces overlooking the sea.  • Dramatic coast and harbour views: Portland Castle opposite, Weymouth Bay, changing light over water. Excellent at sunset.  ⸻ Practical Info • Location: Old Castle Road, Weymouth, Dorset, England. On cliffs above Portland Harbour.  • Access & Walking: The castle is accessed via the Rodwell Trail and nearby paths. The ground is uneven; some parts are unstable. Visitor access has been restricted at times due to safety.  • Facilities: Public gardens (Sandsfoot Gardens), benches, signage, pond, viewing areas. Limited café / refreshments in nearby Weymouth.  • Best Time to Visit: Clear weather, spring or summer for gardens in bloom; early evening for golden light over the sea. After storms can be dramatic but cliff erosion and safety may affect access.  ⸻ Why It’s Worth Visiting Despite its ruinous state, Sandsfoot Castle is rich with atmosphere. It offers a blend of history, sea-air, coastal scenery, and the melancholy beauty of decay. You can feel the weight of time—of seaforts, erosion, shifting ownership—and still enjoy beauty: gardens, light, sea reflections. For photographers, history lovers, or anyone who loves shoreline drama, it’s very compelling. ⸻ Final Thoughts Bring sturdy shoes and a windbreaker (sea wind up on cliffs is strong). Check current access status (this ruin has been fenced off before). Stay for sunset if you can—the light over Portland and the ruins is especially good. Walk the gardens, peer through battlements, let the sound of waves and the wind fill the space. Sandsfoot is best felt as much as seen.

Our trip to weymouth, we visited durdle door, man o war & lulworth cove. We had such a lush time. Great an easy to get to even if you dont have access to a car. The bus drops you right off at each point! The Jurassic Coaster is the bus by first buses. Plenty of times to get there and back. My room was spacious and bright, furnished comfortably and warmly. It was well-equipped, and everything from the soft bed to the high-quality toiletries impressed me. In short, this hotel offers not only an elegant environment and comfortable rooms, but also attentive service and thoughtful care.
