I spent a morning climbing Marjan Hill, Split’s green lung, starting from the Varoš neighborhood. Entry to the park is free, but the climb is no joke—178 stone steps just to reach the first viewpoint (Telegrin). At the top, the pine-shaded terraces offer a sweeping view of the Diocletian’s Palace rooftops melting into the Adriatic. I followed the dirt path west to the 15th-century St. Nicholas Church, then doubled back to descend toward Bačvice Beach. The walk downhill took 40 minutes; the return climb would have been brutal in the 32°C heat, so I cheated and took a Bolt ride from Bačvice back to the old town for €5. Bačvice is Split’s most famous sandy beach (rare in Croatia), but it’s crowded and the sand is pebbly. The real value of this route isn’t the swim, but the contrast: the scent of Aleppo pines on Marjan versus the salty chaos of Bačvice. I bought a 0.5L cold press from a kiosk near the beach for €4; inside the park, vendors charge €2 for water. Mistake: I wore flip-flops for the Marjan trails—the dusty paths are slippery. Wear trainers. Also, don’t expect solitude at the "quiet" viewpoints; a wedding party was shooting photos at the main terrace. Is it worth it? Yes, for the perspective shift—seeing Split from above makes the palace feel smaller and the sea feel bigger. But if you hate stairs, take the hop-on-hop-off tourist train (€15) that loops the hill. Question: Would you rather pay for a hilltop view or spend those euros on a beach club lounger at Bačvice?

First time in Croatia? Seriously, don't book a group tour. The cookie-cutter itinerary just doesn't do this coast justice.
