When people think of Armenia, ancient monasteries and beautiful mountain landscapes are usually the first things that come to mind. But there's another side of Armenia worth seeing. And for that, I'd recommend taking a look at Lake Sevan. Just over an hour's drive from Yerevan, you'll find an enormous blue lake surrounded by mountains. It's so vast that it almost looks like the sea. Even just sitting by the shore, enjoying the mountain views and watching the water, seems like a good enough reason to make the trip. This is Lake Sevan, one of Armenia's most famous natural attractions. Armenia is a landlocked country, so Lake Sevan has become a popular summer getaway for locals and tourists alike. Sitting around 1,900 metres above sea level, it's a huge freshwater lake surrounded by mountains. But there's more to see here than just the lake. On a small peninsula overlooking the water stands Sevanavank Monastery, which dates back more than 1,100 years. Yes, over 1,100 years! Founded in the 9th century, the monastery sits on a hill above the lake. From below, you can see its ancient stone churches standing against the mountain landscape. After climbing the steps to the top, you're rewarded with one of the best views of Lake Sevan. On one side are the old stone churches. On the other, the endless blue water stretching towards the mountains. And this isn't somewhere I'd recommend visiting just to take a few photos. Take your time, enjoy the views, and spend a little while simply looking around. If you enjoy fish, there's also a local speciality worth trying: Ishkhan (Sevan trout), one of the dishes Lake Sevan is known for. When Is the Best Time to Visit? ☀️ Lake Sevan looks different depending on the season. July and August are great months to visit if you want to enjoy the blue lake, warmer weather, and summer activities. They're also the busiest months, as many locals come here for their holidays. If you'd prefer fewer crowds and pleasant weather, I'd suggest late May to June or September. Winter is a completely different experience. Snow-covered mountains, cold blue water, and the ancient monastery create a very different scene from what you'd see in summer. How to Get There from Yerevan 🚗 Lake Sevan is just over 60 km from Yerevan, making it an easy day trip. Driving usually takes around 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on traffic and where you're going around the lake. If you're travelling on a budget, you can take a bus or minibus to Sevan town and then a taxi to Sevanavank Monastery. I'd recommend setting aside at least half a day so you have enough time to visit the monastery and relax by the lake. And don't forget to bring a light jacket. Lake Sevan sits at a high altitude, so it can feel quite cool and windy, even when Yerevan is warm. Another Beautiful Side of Armenia 🇦🇲 One thing I really like about Armenia is how different the scenery can be from one place to another. At Noravank, you have an ancient monastery surrounded by dramatic red cliffs. At Lake Sevan, you get a huge blue lake surrounded by mountains, with the 1,100-year-old Sevanavank Monastery overlooking the water. If you're visiting Yerevan, I'd definitely recommend spending half a day exploring Lake Sevan rather than staying in the city the whole time. Sometimes, the best travel memories aren't about how many famous places you've visited. They're about those quiet moments when you find a beautiful view and have the time to simply sit there and enjoy it. #lakesevan #sevanavank #armenia #visitarmenia #explorearmenia #armeniatravel #travelarmenia #hiddengems #ancientmonastery #beautifulplaces #naturelovers #travelinspiration
