My Solo trip at Bongeunsa Temple

#localescapes Buddhist monasteries during the mid-16th century, by which time Korean Buddhism had come to be dominated by two schools, one based on meditation and the other on texts. The temple was moved to its current location in the ninth month of 1562 as Jeongneung, the tomb of King Jungjong, was moved to the temple site east of today's Seolleung, where King Seongjong is buried with his Queen Consort Jeonghyeon. During the late Joseon period, the temple was also the seat of a Rectification Office (Gyujeongso), a government agency responsible for the supervision of the religious life of the Sangha, Buddhist priests. Bongeunsa played a leading role in the national effort to provide relief for the victims of the 1925 floods that hit nearly the entire Korean Pen-insula. Now situated in Gangnam, at the heart of Korea's most prosperous commercial district, the temple is the hub of various religious and charity activities in the local Buddhist community and leads the effort to spread Korean Buddhism and culture to international visitors.
