Beijing | The Hidden Southeast Asian Cuisine Behind Xiaoyun Road Food Street

🍃 Nanyang Teahouse 📍 15-40, Xiaoyun Road, Chaoyang District My fondness for Nanyang has always been unwavering, especially after watching the drama "Little Nyonya"! Hence, this Nanyang cuisine, which I've been eyeing since its opening half a year ago, has finally made it to my itinerary! Yes, I visited it in its inaugural year. 😜 The restaurant is located at the back of Xiaoyun Road's food street. Upon entering, you feel as if you've been transported to the locale itself, with its lofty space, large murals, floral tiles, tin utensil holders, and rustic tableware... You're instantly enveloped by this atmosphere. 🍃 ❥ Teh Tarik, 25RMB 🍵 ❥ Coffee, 25RMB ☕️ Hmm... The Teh Tarik is rich and full-bodied, but where's my coffee?! ❥ Lele Rolls, 20RMB 🍢 Seems to be meatballs made from chicken and vermicelli, skewered and fried. Three skewers per serving, two balls per skewer. The exterior is delightfully crispy. ❥ Sarawak Laksa, 58RMB 🍜 Laksa, a Southeast Asian staple that I'm particularly fond of. I love the rich and layered broth of Laksa, but the coconut milk flavor isn't prominent. ❥ Special Coconut Milk Rice, 39RMB 🍛 I've had coconut milk rice a few times in Malaysia. The rice is cooked in coconut milk, giving it a faint coconut aroma. Paired with the side sauces, peanuts, cucumber, egg, anchovies, and curry potato chicken? It's a pretty close replica, except that in Malaysia, they usually serve it with a fried egg. ❥ Nanyang Fish Ball Soup, 58RMB 🍡 Comes with bouncy fish balls and fish tofu slices, along with fried tofu skin and some seaweed... A large bowl of this can really fill you up as a main dish.
