A complete guide to 6 summer getaways with kids—tested and approved for being uncrowded and cool
01 Weifang | Shandong
Qingzhou Ancient City sounds old-fashioned, but it's actually a breeze to walk around. When visiting with kids, don't rush to enter through Fucai Gate. First, head to the "Old Locust Tree Pan-Fried Bun" shop on East Gate Street. Bite into one while it's hot; the meat juices mixed with the aroma of the dough will have your child asking for another one the whole way. The main street of the ancient city has smooth stone paths, so it's stroller-friendly. The shops on both sides feature traditional crafts like sugar painting, bamboo weaving, and peach wood carving—your kids will be so mesmerized they won't want to leave. Take a break at the entrance of Ouyuan Garden. The admission ticket is affordable, and the rockeries and caves inside are perfect for exploring—your child will discover their own "secret base." In the afternoon, find a nearby local eatery to try Chaotian pot. The wraps are thin, the meat is tender, and a bowl of hot soup makes everyone, adults and kids alike, feel comfortable. In the evening, the slanted light makes the bluestone paths by the ancient city wall shine—no filters needed for photos.
⚠️ Ouyuan Garden is closed on Mondays, so don't make a wasted trip.
🚄 It takes about 30 minutes by taxi from Weifang Station to the ancient city. The fare is around CNY 40.
02 Beihai | Guangxi
The sand at Beihai Silver Beach is as fine as flour. Walking barefoot, your child's feet will sink in and pop out, making them giggle non-stop. Arrive before 10:00 AM when the tide has just receded. You'll find sand crabs in the little holes on the beach—use a small shovel, and you're sure to catch one. The sun is harsh at noon, so head back to the hotel for a nap and come back out at 4:00 PM when the sea breeze is just right. Set aside a separate day for Weizhou Island. Book your ferry ticket in advance; the trip takes about 1 hour, so be sure to pack motion sickness medicine. Renting an electric scooter is the most convenient way to get around the island, but with kids, I recommend hiring a tricycle. The drivers know the routes well. Just walk a short section of the Crocodile Mountain volcanic rock trail—don't try to do too much. Don't miss the sunset at Dishuidanping. Water drips from the sea-eroded cliffs, and when your child reaches out to catch it, they might say, "The rock is sweating."
🍜 The banana chicken on the island is worth a try; the meat is firm and pairs well with suanye (pickled fruit) to cut the greasiness.
⚠️ At night, there are people at Silver Beach soliciting boat rides to see the night view. Don't go; it's dark and unsafe.
03 Yulin | Shaanxi
The Danxia landform patterns in Wave Valley look like they were carved by the wind. My child pointed at them and said, "These are the earth's wrinkles." When walking the boardwalk with kids, don't go down to the valley floor. A morning of exposure to the sun is enough—remember to wear sun hats. Head back to the county town at noon for a bowl of lamb noodles. The soup is rich, the meat is tender, and your child can easily finish a small bowl. In the afternoon, head to Red Stone Gorge. The stream in the gorge is cool. Your child might not understand the carvings on the rock walls, but they'll have fun touching them and splashing in the water. The Yellow River side in Jia County is better to visit in the evening. The river water glows with a bronze light in the sunset. My child picked up stones to skip, and I sat on the bank watching the boats.
⚠️ Some sections of the Wave Valley boardwalk have low railings, so hold young children tightly.
🚄 A round-trip chartered car from Yulin city to Wave Valley costs about CNY 300. The driver can wait for two hours.
04 Zhangye | Gansu
There are shuttle buses between the viewing platforms at Rainbow Danxia, so you don't have to walk long distances—it saves energy when traveling with kids. My child was most excited that the "mountains look like rainbow cake," especially at Viewing Platform No. 4, where red, yellow, green, and purple layers stack up. The colors are most intense when the sun hits them at an angle around 6:00 PM. It's hot at noon, so hide in the Giant Buddha Temple. It's cool inside, and the reclining Buddha is huge. My child looked up and asked, "Is he asleep?" The 33-Day Grottoes at Mati Temple require climbing narrow ladders. Six or seven-year-olds can take on the challenge, while younger ones can just look at the Gesang flowers at the foot of the mountain. Liqian Ancient City is remote but uncrowded, making it suitable for families who prefer peace and quiet. There's a grassy area under the ancient city wall where kids can run around.
🍜 In the evening, have chicken with dough rolls in the city. The rolls soak up the soup, and my child can eat two bowls with a chicken leg.
⚠️ It's windy at the Danxia scenic area, so bring a light jacket for your child.
05 Xinxiang | Henan
The water in the Baoquan Tourist Area is blue-green, like spilled emeralds. Take the scenic shuttle bus with your child to the gorge entrance, then walk along the boardwalk. The sound of the water follows you the whole way, and my child said, "It sounds like it's singing." You can take off your shoes and wade in the shallow areas. The water is cool but not freezing—remember to bring a towel and a change of pants. Baligou is a bit wilder than Baoquan. Don't take kids up the "Sky Ladder" section; it's tiring and exposed to the sun. Just walk the flat path to Tianhe Waterfall. The mist from the waterfall hits your face, and the kids will scream and dodge, but they won't be able to resist getting closer. Have "pot-rim chicken" at the entrance of the scenic area at noon. Dip the flatbread into the soup—my child got covered in corn while eating.
⚠️ The rocks by the water in both scenic areas are slippery, so wear non-slip sandals.
🚄 It takes about 40 minutes by taxi from Xinxiang East Station to Baoquan. The cost is around CNY 80.
06 Chongqing
Summers in Chongqing are hot, but Wulong is an exception; the temperature in the gorge is 5–6 degrees lower than in the city. The elevator at the Three Natural Bridges takes you straight to the bottom of the sinkhole, so kids don't have to climb stairs. Looking up at the sinkhole and shouting to hear the echo is so fun that they'll want to keep trying. Baoding Mountain at the Dazu Rock Carvings has shaded walkways. Kids might not understand the stories behind the carvings, but the "Six Realms of Reincarnation" wheel looks intimidating—my child pointed at it and asked, "What is the cow pulling?" Jinyun Mountain is best visited in the evening. The mountain breeze is cool. Take a short walk in the botanical garden to see the bamboo forest. The Three Gorges of the Yangtze River are best experienced by cruise ship. Stop at Baidi City. It's windy at the Kuimen viewing platform, so button up your child's jacket.
🍜 Hot pot in the city is too spicy, so have a bowl of clear-soup wontons ready for your child.
⚠️ The steps in the Wulong scenic area are slippery, so don't wear flip-flops.
07 Bijie | Guizhou
Zhijin Cave is a natural air-conditioned room. It's around 10–20 degrees Celsius year-round, so put on a long-sleeved shirt before entering in the summer. The cave route takes about two hours. Lights shine on the various stalactites, stalagmites, stone curtains, and stone flowers. My child asked the whole way, "Does this look like an elephant?" When you come out of the cave and hit the sun, the temperature change is sharp, so have a light jacket ready for your child. The Baili Dujuan (Hundred Miles of Rhododendrons) scenic area is better for walking on gentle slopes with kids. Although the flowering season is over, the lush green mountains in summer are still comfortable. There are snack stalls at the Soma Flower Square—try the roasted potatoes dipped in chili powder. My child stuck their tongue out after one bite, but wanted to try again a moment later.
⚠️ It's slippery inside Zhijin Cave, so wear sneakers, not sandals.
🚄 It's about a 1.5-hour drive from Bijie city to Zhijin Cave. You can charter a car.
08 Taiyuan | Shanxi
The Jinci Museum is worth spending half a day at. The sound of the Nanlao Spring is tinkling. My child leaned on the railing to watch the fish and could stay there for 20 minutes. At the coiled wooden dragons in front of the Hall of the Holy Mother, my child counted, "One, two, three, dragon claws," then looked up at the painted maid statues and asked, "Why isn't she smiling?" There are many ancient trees in the garden, making it cool and shady in the summer. It's not tiring to push a stroller on the stone paths. For lunch, have dalo noodles (noodles with thick gravy) near Jinci. The gravy has yuba, wood ear mushrooms, and daylily buds—my child can mix it and eat half a bowl. In the afternoon, go to Tianlong Mountain and walk the grotto trail. The mountain breeze is cool, but there are many steps, so it's suitable for kids who can walk on their own. Go to Jinyang Lake Park in the evening. It's windy by the lake. My child flew a kite while I sat on a bench watching. When the sun set, the lake surface shimmered with gold.
⚠️ Tianlong Mountain is crowded on weekends, so go early.
🚄 It takes about 30 minutes by taxi from Taiyuan city to Jinci.
Six places, all cool, all uncrowded. When traveling with kids, do less rushing and more relaxing. The kids will be happy, and the adults won't be tired. Where do you plan to go first? Let's chat in the comments.
