That’s exactly what we did: we left our heavy bags at our hotel in Guangzhou (pro tip: many hotels are completely fine with holding your luggage for a few days—just ask!) and traveled light to Yangshuo. It was hands down the best decision! · -- 🚄 How to get there Grab tickets for the Guangzhou–Yangshuo high-speed train (I broke down exactly how to do this in my previous post). The ride is a breeze—just 2 hours. Once you step out of the Yangshuo railway station, you'll spot city buses ready to shuttle you straight to Xingping. No long waits here; you'll be there in about 10–15 minutes. · -- 🏘️ What to do in Xingping 1. Take a stroll down the old street—it's got a super vibrant vibe where you can grab a bite and really soak in the spirit of this ancient town 🏮 2. Head down to the Li River waterfront and walk along the bank. If you're feeling energetic, hike up to the observation deck. Fair warning, the climb isn't a walk in the park, but it's worth every single step! The mind-blowing panoramic views of the karst mountains from the top will literally give you goosebumps. · -- 🏨 Evening in Yangshuo After exploring Xingping, hop back on that same city bus and head into Yangshuo. I highly recommend booking a hotel with panoramic views—and if your schedule allows, stay for two nights. This gives you plenty of time to kick back, enjoy the epic scenery right from your room, and wander around the town at your own pace without rushing. · -- ⛰️ The next day — Guilin From Yangshuo, you can keep the adventure going and head to Guilin. You can take a taxi or even cruise down the river on a boat (which is a whole adventure in itself!). Extraterrestrial landscapes in China can be found in Yangshuo and Xingping. This year, we discovered these places, which can easily compete with the Avatar mountains. In the Yangshuo area, I recommend booking a hotel with panoramic mountain views to enjoy them from morning till evening. Also, make sure to go rafting on the river; there are many options nearby, so choose the one that suits you best. Next, definitely rent an electric bike (around 300₽, no license required) and explore the area thoroughly. We rode along the Yulong River, and the views were stunning. Along the way, there are small cafes and coffee shops (the route runs almost directly along the river, not on the main road). Xingping is a super famous place in China; I think everyone has seen the traditional-style photo of a raft with cormorants. It is taken right here. Additionally, there is an amazing rafting experience (called Li River Bamboo Raft), located just 15 minutes on foot from the old town. You should also climb Laozhai Mountain—it’s challenging, but the views are worth it. We visited in winter and were thrilled. We want to return in spring or summer because the views we saw there are unmatched, and the scenic pools in the hotels were waiting for us due to the weather. The most striking exhibit is the dragon-patterned large tile end, also known as the "king of tile ends," unearthed at the Huangshan Palace site. But someone wrote in trip.com Moments: "Don't miss Xingping, get off and stay a couple of days." They also included a photo: karst mountains, a river, reflections in the water, and not a single crowd. I checked the information right in the trip.com app: map, directions, reviews, hotels. And I rewrote my itinerary. Thanks to that stranger from Moments—you gave me the best place of this trip. What is Xingping? This ancient town on the banks of the Li River boasts 1,200 years of history. Cobbled streets, wooden houses, carved balconies. But the main thing is the panorama you all know: this very landscape is printed on the 20-yuan bill. As you enter, take out the bill, compare, and take photos. What captivated me (to the point of shivers): 1. The view from Laozhai Mountain The climb is 1,159 steps. I huffed and puffed, cursed, but at the top, I simply sat down and fell silent. The river curves like a horseshoe, the karst peaks disappear into the haze, and below are the tiled roofs of the old town. This isn't a view, it's an engraving. 2. A bamboo raft cruise (not bamboo, though—PVC, honestly). From Xingping Wharf to Nine Horse Village, it's a 40-minute boat ride. Silence, only the sound of the water and fishermen with cormorants. Price: 150 yuan. A great value. 3. Sunset Walk Along the River A paved path runs along the water from the old town. As I walked, mountains towered to my right, and the Li River reflected the sky to my left. Elderly locals were fishing from the dams. I sat on a rock and simply vanished into thin air. 4. Morning at the Market Everything here is authentic: grandmothers sell pomelo and tangerines, men carry baskets of bamboo shoots. No tourist trappings, just real life. Useful info (save!): How to get there: From Guilin, take the train to Yangshuo Station (25 minutes), then a bus to Xingping (40 minutes). From Yangshuo, take a direct bus (50 minutes). I booked my train tickets through trip.com—everything went smoothly, including the time and location, no stress. Where to stay: I rented a guesthouse in the old town with a mountain view for 150 yuan/night (through trip.com, of course). There are simpler and more expensive options, ranging from 80 to 600 yuan. Where to eat: Street noodle stalls for 10-15 yuan. A local specialty is "Xingping rice rolls" (米粉): thin dough filled with pork and mushrooms, 15 yuan. Finger-licking good. Number of days: Minimum 1 night, ideally 2-3. I planned for 1 day and stayed 3. Summary: Xingping is neither the hyped-up Yangshuo nor the bustling Guilin. Xingping is a small Chinese town neighboring its big brother, Yangshuo. Tourists usually stay in Yangshuo or Guilin, and if they do visit Xingping, it's typically for a very short time. But that's a mistake, guys—this spot offers the absolute best views of the mountains🌄 and the Li River🏞️ in Guangxi Province. You should definitely stay for a day in this amazing place. As a photographer and a seasoned traveler who has visited 60 countries, let me give you some tips on how to spend a perfect day here. Here we go: 🌤️Morning. Laozhai Mountain. It's best to hike up in the morning: the lighting is great for photos, there are fewer tourists, and the climb itself is pretty tough, so you'll want to beat the midday sun. You'll be climbing old stone steps, and for most of the trail, there are no handrails. At the very end, you have to scramble up a steep rocky section. But trust me—it is absolutely worth it; the view from the viewing platform is breathtaking. 🌞Afternoon. Spend the afternoon just wandering around the old town. Forget about the time and get lost in the narrow streets. You'll be greeted by mouth-watering aromas from numerous local eateries (try the bamboo with beef, you won't be disappointed), souvenir shops, and teahouses. 🌜Evening. Dedicate the golden hour and sunset to the gorgeous landscapes of the Li River. When you're on the riverbank, make sure to take a photo holding a 20 RMB banknote (the scenery you'll see right in front of you is exactly what's printed on the bill). After that, go ahead and wade across the river. Don't worry—you'll be able to spot safe places to cross right from the bank. How to get there: 🚌 By bus from Yangshuo - it takes about 40-45 mins, from Guilin - about 1.5 hours. 🚅 By train from Yangshuo or Guilin. I took the train from Guangzhou. Don't make the same mistake I did: when I got out of the Xingping railway station, I grabbed a taxi to the town (the station is 8 km away). The taxi drivers aren't licensed to enter the town itself, so they only drop you off at the town gates. From there, you either have to walk or find another ride. It’s way more convenient to just hop on the local bus at the railway station that goes directly to town (buses run every 30 minutes).
