Climbing Fanjing Mountain with kids, want to see amazing sights but worried the kids will be exhausted? This guide is your “lifesaver”! Follow it for an easy and fun trip! Our family took the cable car up the mountain, saving a lot of energy. After getting off the cable car, the real climb begins. If the kids really can’t walk anymore (or if you want to take it easy 😜), there are price signs nearby where you can pay someone to carry you up, costing about 1,000 yuan. Climbing upward, you’ll first reach Mushroom Rock. It’s super magical here—the rock looks like a big mushroom, and the kids exclaimed it looked like a “chocolate mushroom!” 🍄 Here’s an important tip: there’s a sign nearby to scan a QR code to reserve a spot for the Red Cloud Golden Summit! Be sure to scan and reserve first! We reserved first, then went to the Old Golden Summit, and came back later to climb the Red Cloud Golden Summit—there was plenty of time. If your reservation number is far back, it’s recommended to head straight to the Red Cloud Golden Summit first. Continuing the climb, you’ll pass the Nine Emperor Cave, which is also a historical trail from the Red Army’s Long March—great for telling kids some stories. Then you can reach the top of the Old Golden Summit! The scenery is breathtaking! Afterward, follow the signs back to Mushroom Rock to climb the other side. Next, you’ll pass Cheng’en Temple and then arrive at Pudu Square. There’s a loudspeaker calling reservation numbers, and a small shop in the square, but prices are a bit high—one grilled sausage costs 10 yuan. Luckily, we brought snacks and fruit, so the kids could recharge anytime. 🎒 When our number was called, we headed to the gate to prepare for climbing the Red Cloud Golden Summit. This part of the trail is quite steep, especially the narrow steps shown in photos P9 and P10. Be sure to hold the kids’ hands tightly, have them grip the iron chains, don’t let them hold anything in their hands, and focus on climbing. 💪 Along the way, we passed Guanyin Cave and heard an interesting story: Fanjing Mountain was once underwater and was pushed up by tectonic plate collisions, which is why the mountain is so steep and knife-like. Whether true or not, it was a great geography lesson for the kids! 🌊 The moment we reached the Red Cloud Golden Summit, it was all worth it! On a clear day, you can see a stunning sea of clouds, and the kids excitedly searched for “cotton candy clouds.” ☁️ The way down was much easier. We passed the Heavenly King Hall and the Guanyin statue, then chose the cableway direction. There was a rest area with free ginger tea—perfect for warming up. Finally, we took the 8-person cable car down (about 20 minutes), then transferred to a shuttle van (9 seats) to the main entrance. We left around 5:30 PM and didn’t see any big buses, but the parking lot had 9-seat vans going directly to Tongren High-Speed Rail Station, about a 1 hour 20 minute ride. 🔖 Before reading this article, please confirm: You are a hot spring addict Sinan's hot spring resources are in a league of their own in all of Guizhou. But what really made me decide to write this piece is the hot spring pool built on the edge of a cliff—400m in the air beneath your feet, a starry sky above your head, and 37°C natural weak alkaline hot spring water beneath you. You can't find this experience anywhere else in China. ♨️ Cliff Hot Spring · Maximum thrills and relaxation Located on the edge of Sinan County, built on the cliff along the Wujiang River. The pools are tiered along the mountainside, and the scenery seen from each layer is different. The top layer is the sky pool, with tempered glass railings. Looking down while soaking—the Wujiang River flows right under your feet, the water is emerald green, and boats float on the river like leaves. That feeling of suspension makes you nervous and excited. After soaking for a few minutes, the tension fades, replaced by an ultimate sense of relaxation. Sinan is still hot during the day in summer, but the temperature drops in the evening. Choosing to soak in the hot spring at night is the smartest move: the temperature drops to around 25°C, the water temperature is 37°C, soaking inside is comfortable and refreshing, and looking up, there are stars all over the sky. 📌 Hot spring area tips: · Bring your own swim cap (buying on-site is expensive and choices are limited) · Waterproof phone pouch is a must, otherwise you can't take photos · Locker quantity is limited, arrive early to choose a spot close to the pool · Get up and rest after soaking for 20 mins, don't overdo it 🏯 Anhua Old Street · An old street that hasn't changed its name in 400 years The day after the hot spring, go visit Anhua Old Street. This street has been called Anhua since the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty. It hasn't changed its name or location for over 400 years, which alone is enough to command respect. The bluestone slabs underfoot have been polished smooth and shiny by time, with moss growing in the cracks. The street is not wide, and most of the buildings on both sides are from the late Qing Dynasty, with white walls, dark tiles, horse-head walls, and exquisite wood-carved window lattices. Some walls are covered with creeping ivy, which adds a sense of weathered beauty. Focus on two places— 🔸 Zhouheshun Salt Shop During the Ming and Qing dynasties, Sinan was one of the most important docks on the lower reaches of the Wujiang River. Sichuan salt was transported here via the Wujiang River and then transshipped to various parts of eastern Guizhou. Zhouheshun Salt Shop was one of the largest salt shops at that time and still retains its original architectural layout. Standing in front of the door, you can almost smell the scent of salt and tung oil from back then. 🔸 Old houses along the street Wander into an alley, push open a half-closed wooden door, and you'll find mostly Tujia and Miao elderly people living inside. They will warmly invite you to sit down for tea. They speak with a heavy dialect, and although you might not understand it well, that simple, warm enthusiasm cannot be faked. 🌿 Bailu Lake Wetland Park · The ultimate state of relaxation If you have time, go to Bailu Lake. Sit on a small boat drifting on the lake, surrounded by karst hills, like green emeralds scattered on the water. The water is so clear you can see fish swimming under the boat. In July, during the high-water period, the lake water takes on a very special emerald color. There are no commercial facilities here, just pure lake and mountain scenery. Rent a small boat and row slowly, or just sit on the shore and relax, clearing all the messy thoughts in your head. The room had an independent hot spring pool, so I could soak whenever I wanted. The pool was by the window, and while soaking, I could see the night view of the Wujiang River in the distance, with the city lights reflecting on the river like stars. After soaking, I took a shower and lay on the bed, every pore in my body was relaxed. I slept very soundly that night, without even dreaming. When I woke up the next day, the light coming through the curtain gap was warm orange, and I felt like I had been recharged by the hot spring and sunshine. Walking inside, you'll see needle-like, tower-like, pillar-like, and castle-like stones standing densely. Some look like mushrooms, some like swords, and others like pillars supporting the sky. Light filters through the crevices, making every photo look like a sci-fi blockbuster. A perk of visiting the stone forest in summer is that the gaps between the stones naturally form wind tunnels. While it's scorching hot outside, it's cool inside the crevices. Navigating through it feels like walking through a maze, with surprises around every corner. ⚠️ Tips: ① Many steps, some slippery, so wear non-slip sneakers ② The whole route takes about 3 hours, bring enough water ③ Arrive before 9:00 AM for the best light and to avoid the heat ④ Admission is around 50 yuan, great value ◑ Afternoon · Haojiawan Ancient Village · — A feng shui maze built of stone 600 years ago Drive from the stone forest toward Banqiao Township, and you'll reach Haojiawan in about half an hour. This village was founded during the Jingtai reign of the Ming Dynasty, nearly 600 years ago, and over 150 households surnamed Hao have lived here for generations. The most unique thing about the village is that all the buildings are made of stone—stone walls, courtyards, paths, alleys, and houses—arranged in an S-shape around a natural spring, said to be built according to the Bagua formation. Walking through the stone alleys, with stone walls towering over your head and narrow, crisscrossing paths, you really might get lost. Water channels lead from the spring throughout the village. You can hear the water constantly, but you can't see where it comes from or where it goes, which is quite mysterious. There's a Phoenix Mountain in front of the village. Viewed from above, the layout of the village resembles the Big Dipper guarding the moon—a textbook example of feng shui. 📌 Free admission. You'll see elderly residents chatting at their doorways, creating a very authentic, lived-in atmosphere, not the performative kind of ancient village. ◒ Evening · Slow time by the Wujiang River Back in the county seat, take a walk by the Wujiang River in the evening. Sinan is a small town where the Wujiang River flows through. The river is wide with emerald-green water. On summer evenings, the river breeze is gentle, lights on both banks gradually turn on, and their reflections stretch long across the water. Rent a bike to ride along the river, or just find a stone to sit on and watch the fishing boats go by. That slow, leisurely pace is unique to Sinan. If the weather is good, the surface of the Wujiang River at sunset is dyed gold, and the whole scene is incredibly peaceful. 🏡 About accommodation This time, I chose a river-view room by the Wujiang River. The balcony faces the river directly, with an unobstructed view. Sitting on the balcony in the evening, watching the river water change from emerald green to golden orange and then to ink blue, felt like watching a painting slowly change colors. The room's soundproofing was surprisingly good; despite being by the river, I couldn't hear any noise, only the occasional whistle of a boat reminding you that this is a living river. Opening the curtains in the morning, a thin layer of mist floated on the river, with the shadows of the mountains on the opposite side appearing and disappearing—that hazy feeling was so sophisticated. ✍️ Final thoughts My feeling about Sinan is this: it doesn't rush to please you, but once you leave, you'll always want to come back.
