You wander through narrow alleyways beneath carved wooden balconies, turn a corner into a sun-drenched plaza, and a minute later find yourself back in the cool shade of endless market stalls. It's easy to get lost on purpose here: every dead end carries a new scent—fresh mint, raw leather, or the glowing metal of coppersmiths. The Taste of the City Pause amidst the chaos at a mobile cart. A vendor in an apron skillfully slices through a mountain of pomegranates, and the ice-cold ruby juice in a plastic cup feels like a drink from the gods after the Marrakech heat. Further along, in a tiny tea house, the host will brew the most delicious mint tea you've ever tasted—scalding hot, packed with fresh sprigs, refilled with boiling water again and again until you say "enough." Jemaa el-Fnaa at Night As the sun dips behind the Koutoubia Mosque's minaret, the market stalls fold away and the main square transforms. The scent of grilled fish mingles with shisha smoke. Snake charmers yield the stage to acrobats. Suddenly, dozens of performers in crimson robes begin their hypnotic fire show—spinning flaming torches to the rhythmic pulse of drums, sending sparks dancing into the African night sky. And the best way to end such a day is to sit on a riad's rooftop with a cup of thick black coffee or more of that mint tea. On this trip to Marrakech, I saved my most luxurious night for the Royal Mansour. My first impression wasn't that it felt "distantly expensive," but rather like staying in a carefully restored Moroccan palace—red clay walls, arches, pools, lanterns, and palm trees. Every step is incredibly photogenic. Highlights: The most attractive parts of the hotel are the courtyard and terrace spaces. The pool reflections, the play of light and shadow in the arcades, and the rooftop garden are all perfect for photos. During the day, you can explore the courtyards and photograph the pool and room details. In the evening, head to the roof to see the old city and distant mountains. Once the lights come on at night, the entire hotel takes on a truly special North African atmosphere. Photo spots: I personally recommend these angles: 1. Entrance long shot: Great for capturing the overall architecture and red-brown tones. 2. Central pool courtyard: The arches and reflections are perfect for symmetrical compositions. 3. Room window: Captures the warm texture of a Moroccan bedroom. 4. Private pool courtyard: Offers the strongest vacation vibe, perfect for a featured image. 5. Rooftop terrace: At sunset, you can capture the old city, mountains, and sky. 6. Nighttime pool: The light reflections feel very sophisticated. The Moroccan sun is very strong, and photos taken at noon are prone to overexposure, so it's best to shoot in the morning or evening. If you want to photograph the rooftop terrace, I suggest checking the opening hours in advance and arriving before sunset to be safe. I have put together a 10-day itinerary that allows you to see completely different sides of the country—from the Atlantic to the Sahara. And most importantly, this is not the kind of itinerary where you’ll say afterward, "I spent my whole time on a bus." Here, the scenery changes every single day. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🌊 DAY 1 — ESSAOUIRA Let's start not with Marrakech, but with the ocean. Essaouira is a blue-and-white city on the Atlantic coast, an ancient medina, a fishing port, fortress walls, and an ocean breeze. The atmosphere here is completely different: calm, slightly bohemian, and very laid-back. In the morning, you can stroll through the medina, head to the port in the afternoon to try some fresh fish, and simply sit by the ocean in the evening. If you're craving some action, surfing and other water sports are quite popular here. 📍 Overnight stay: Essaouira 💡 Essaouira is officially one of Morocco's premier coastal destinations, and the country's tourist office calls it the "Pearl of the Atlantic." ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🌴 DAY 2 — ESSAOUIRA → MARRAKECH A little more ocean in the morning, and then we head to Marrakech. And then a place appears that you've almost certainly seen in the movies. 🏰 Aït Benhaddou An ancient fortified ksar made of clay buildings, looking as though it was designed specifically for a film set. In fact, it is so cinematic that numerous famous movies and TV shows have been filmed here. Aït Benhaddou is a UNESCO World Heritage site. After a walk, we continue our journey to Ouarzazate. 📍 Overnight stay: Ouarzazate ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🏜️ DAY 5 — OUARZAZATE → DADES Today, Morocco starts looking like another planet altogether. We drive through valleys and canyons towards the Dades Valley. Red rocks, palm groves, tiny villages, and roads that literally cut right through the mountains. You can make a stop at the Dades Gorge and take a short hike. This is no longer the Morocco we saw in Marrakech. It's much quieter here. And that’s exactly why I would definitely recommend spending at least one night in a small hotel or guesthouse amidst the mountains. 📍 Overnight stay: Dades Valley ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🐪 DAY 6 — DADES → MERZOUGA → SAHARA Today is the day many people fly to Morocco for in the first place. We head towards Merzouga. The landscape changes gradually. The mountains disappear. There is less greenery. And then they appear: 🏜️ the immense golden dunes of the Sahara. Merzouga is located near the famous desert massif of Erg Chebbi, where the dunes reach impressive heights. Morocco's official tourist office recommends staying overnight in a camp here, taking a camel ride, and trekking through the desert. You can get to the camp by a 4x4 or ride there on camels. After that comes dinner under the stars, music, and a night in the middle of the desert. 📍 Overnight stay: Sahara camp And here, I definitely wouldn't skimp on the camp. It’s better to book a beautiful desert camp with a proper bed and an en-suite bathroom. Because sunrise over the dunes is an absolute must-do on the itinerary. When the first rays of the sun begin to illuminate the sand, the Sahara turns practically golden. After breakfast, we head towards Fes. This will be one of the longest drives of the route, so it's best to treat today as a road trip day. Along the way, the landscapes, climate, and even the architecture change. By evening, we arrive in Fes. 📍 Overnight stay: Fes ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🕌 DAY 8 — FES If Marrakech is about energy and color, then Fes is all about history. Its medina is considered one of the largest car-free historic urban areas in the world. Narrow streets. Ancient workshops. Leather tanneries. Madrasas. Souks. Doors concealing hidden riads. It's especially nice here to just walk around without a set itinerary. And be sure to try to find a traditional riad for the night. It's not just a hotel. Often, behind an unassuming door on the street lies a beautiful courtyard with a fountain and plants. 📍 Overnight stay: Fes ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 💙 DAY 9 — FES → CHEFCHAOUEN And right here, the picture changes once again. A few hours later, you will find yourself in a town that looks like it was painted. 💙 Chefchaouen Blue walls. Blue stairs. Blue doors. Blue alleys. The town is nestled in the Rif Mountains, and its famous medina is indeed painted in various shades of blue. Morocco's official tourist office calls Chefchaouen the "blue diamond" and also recommends nearby hiking trails and the Akchour waterfalls. Just take a stroll. Don't look for one specific landmark. Here, the street itself is the landmark. If you have enough energy left, you can hike up to the Spanish Mosque for a panoramic view of the town. 📍 Overnight stay: Chefchaouen ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ✈️ DAY 10 — RETURN Here, everything depends on your return ticket. If you are flying out of Tangier, you can head there in the morning—it's about a 2-hour drive from Chefchaouen.

If I could pick a city that feels completely different from anywhere I’ve been before, Marrakech would be high on my list. There’s something about the colors, the sounds, the smells and the rhythm of everyday life here that makes it feel like you’ve stepped into another world. 🕌 Getting Lost in the Medina I think the first thing I’d want to do is simply walk through the Medina without following a strict route. The narrow streets, old buildings, tiny shops and hidden courtyards seem made for getting a little lost. One minute you’re walking past a quiet doorway, and the next you’re surrounded by colorful rugs, lanterns, ceramics and local crafts. I’d probably put the map away for a while and just see where the streets take me. 🛍️ Exploring the Souks The souks would definitely be one of my favorite parts. Spices, leather goods, handmade pottery, woven baskets, colorful textiles and traditional lamps fill the small shops. Even if you don’t buy anything, there’s so much to look at. And I think bargaining would be part of the experience. 😄 🌿 Jardin Majorelle After the energy of the Medina, I’d want somewhere much quieter. Jardin Majorelle looks like the perfect escape, with its striking blue architecture, exotic plants and peaceful paths. It’s one of those places where I’d probably slow down, take a hundred photos and still feel like I hadn’t captured the colors properly. 🏰 Bahia Palace I’d also make time for Bahia Palace. The detailed tilework, carved wood, courtyards and traditional Moroccan architecture are exactly the kind of details I love seeing when traveling. Rather than just taking a quick look around, I’d want to pay attention to the small patterns and craftsmanship that make each room different. 🍊 And then there’s the food… A trip to Marrakech would obviously have to involve food. I’d want to try traditional Moroccan tagine, couscous, pastilla, freshly baked bread and as many local dishes as possible. And I don’t think I could leave without sitting somewhere with a glass of Moroccan mint tea, watching the city move around me. 🌅 Marrakech at Sunset But I think the moment I’d look forward to most would be sunset. As the light changes over the old buildings and the streets become more atmospheric, Marrakech seems to take on a completely different character. I’d find a rooftop somewhere, order something simple, and just watch the city turn golden. 🏔️ Beyond the City One of the things I like about Marrakech is that the experience doesn’t have to end at the city limits. The Atlas Mountains are close enough to make a day trip possible, giving you the chance to trade the busy streets of Marrakech for mountain villages, valleys and a completely different side of Morocco. That contrast is probably what would make the trip feel even more memorable. Marrakech doesn’t seem like a city you simply visit. The moment I stepped inside, it felt like I had been transported to another world. 🧡 Both sides of the narrow alleys were packed with tiny shops lined up one after another, selling everything from leather bags and Moroccan Babouche slippers to rugs, spices, lanterns, ceramics, and all sorts of souvenirs. What truly makes this market so captivating is the sheer explosion of colors and the lively vibe—the heady scent of spices, vendors calling out to customers, the hustle and bustle of the crowd, and the endless array of goods hanging from every storefront. At times, the pathways were so tight I had to dodge pedestrians and handcarts, not to mention the motorbikes that would occasionally weave through, keeping me constantly on my toes looking left and right! 😅 But the deeper I ventured, the more thrilling it became. You never quite know what awaits you around the next corner. Pro tip: stay in the Maarif district—it's the city's liveliest, trendiest, and most central neighborhood. It makes getting to all the landmarks a breeze, whether by taxi or on foot. 🔸Day 1: Casablanca - The largest city in Morocco, often treated as just a layover spot by travelers. But trust me, there's plenty to see here. 📍What to see: Hassan II Mosque, El Hank Lighthouse, the Corniche promenade, Arab League Park, Mohammed V Square (where you'll find the giant 'Casablanca' sign for a photo op), the Medina and its vibrant markets, including the seafood market. You absolutely have to try the fresh oysters—locals sell huge ones right on the street downtown for just 10 dirhams a pop! The city has a really unique vibe and feels incredibly diverse—especially when you explore it on foot! 🔸Day 2: Rabat - Morocco’s capital. Compared to Casablanca, it's so much calmer, cleaner, and more organized! I absolutely loved this town and its laid-back rhythm. Wandering through the old Medina is pure bliss, soaking in the charming, narrow streets painted in striking blue and white. 📍What to see: We took the high-speed train from Casablanca and started exploring on foot. There’s some amazing street art on the buildings along the way to Nouzhat Hassan Garden. Next up were Hassan Tower and the Mausoleum of Mohammed V—the city's crown jewels of architecture. You should also stroll through the Medina and the Salé neighborhood. And Kasbah of the Udayas? Totally mind-blowing! It’s an ancient citadel right in Rabat, boasting stunning Moorish architecture from the Almohad era. Don't miss a walk along the Rabat Corniche to watch the locals cliff-jumping off the citadel walls into the water). 🔸Days 3-4: Tangier - A historically rich city sitting right at the gateway to Europe. Brace yourself—this will be the most action-packed and visually stunning day of the trip. You'll get to see traditional Berber villages, sweeping mountain vistas, and hike out to some local waterfalls . Agafay Desert: Just 30 km outside of Marrakech, you'll find a rocky desert dotted with white dunes that gives off major Sahara vibes. It’s the perfect place for a short camel trek to catch a stunning desert sunset. 🔸Day 10: Back to Casablanca. Hotel with a Pool. · This is your downtime day. The drive isn't too long, so use this time to soak up the ocean views and decompress from all the noise and hustle! We took a detour through the coastal town of Essaouira, though we ran out of time to hit up the resort city of Agadir. Maybe next time. Plan your time carefully, as the driving distances are pretty hefty overall. You want to make sure you aren't rushing! Also, use extreme caution during rain or snow (up in the passes), as roads can shut down without much warning . · Parking: Trying to park in the Medinas (old towns) is a massive headache. Your best bet is to leave your car in a secure parking lot near your hotel and rely on taxis to navigate the city . Speed cameras and cops are literally everywhere on the roads, especially right before toll booths—we actually snagged a few speeding tickets ourselves. Fines run anywhere from 150 to 400 dirhams. So seriously, stick to the speed limit strictly! Africa honestly surprised me. Before going, I mostly imagined safaris and wildlife, but there’s so much more to see. These three countries really stayed with me. 🇿🇦 South Africa South Africa feels like several countries in one. Cape Town was easily my favorite mountains, ocean, beautiful roads, and amazing sunsets everywhere. Driving along the coast was one of those moments where I kept wanting to stop just to take photos. 🇲🇦 Morocco Morocco is completely different, and that’s what I loved about it. Walking through the old streets of Marrakech, getting lost in the souks, and seeing the Sahara for the first time felt almost unreal. It’s colorful, chaotic, beautiful, and full of character. 🇹🇿 Tanzania Tanzania gave me some of my favorite memories in Africa. Seeing wild animals in the Serengeti was incredible, but Zanzibar was the perfect contrast afterward white sand, clear blue water, and a much slower pace. Safari and tropical island in one trip is pretty hard to beat. If Africa is on your bucket list, I’d happily recommend starting with any of these three.
