#planitorwingit Taking a ferry in the Philippines for the first time can feel a little confusing — especially when you already bought your ticket online and assume that means you can simply show the QR code and walk onto the boat. Not quite. 😅 We booked our OceanJet ferry from Cebu to Tagbilaran, Bohol through Trip.com: 6:00 AM departure, Economy Class, US$38.49 total for two people. And this is exactly the kind of journey I would put firmly in the PLAN IT category. There are several steps between arriving at Cebu Pier 1 and actually sitting on the ferry. Here’s the process shown in the boarding instructions for our booking. 👇 🎫 STEP 1 — Have your e-ticket AND passport ready Your Trip.com booking confirmation is important, but it isn’t necessarily the final thing you’ll use to board. The instructions for our booking say to present your e-ticket and passport at the pier for entry. So before getting out of the taxi, I’d already have both ready on my phone/in my hand rather than standing at the entrance searching through screenshots and bags. 💡 I also recommend downloading or screenshotting your voucher beforehand. When you’re traveling, I never like making an important boarding process dependent on having perfect mobile internet. 💰 STEP 2 — Pay the terminal fee / port tax This is one of the details that can surprise first-time travelers. Even though our OceanJet tickets were already completely booked and paid through Trip.com, the boarding instructions still tell passengers to go to the terminal fee counter inside the pier and purchase/pay the applicable port fee using the e-ticket. In other words: online ferry ticket ≠ automatically finished with every step at the port. Keep some Philippine pesos accessible instead of putting all your cash deep inside your luggage. 🇵🇭 🎟️ STEP 3 — Go to the OceanJet counter Next comes a particularly important step. According to the instructions attached to our Trip.com booking, you need to find the OceanJet counter and use your e-ticket to get your seat number printed. So don’t arrive, see that your Trip.com booking says “confirmed,” and assume you can immediately head toward the boarding gate. Your online reservation gets you much of the way there — but there is still a physical port process. And here is the detail I would take VERY seriously: ⚠️ Seat-number printing stops 30 minutes before boarding time, according to our booking instructions. That alone is enough reason for me not to wing this journey. 🧳 STEP 4 — Deal with your luggage After the ticket/seat process comes baggage. The instructions for our booking specifically say to check baggage at the OceanJet counter, while handbags do not need to be checked. There are different rules for Business Class, and oversized baggage is treated differently, so don’t assume the suitcase rules are identical for every passenger. This is especially important if you’re traveling around Asia with proper luggage rather than doing a Bohol day trip with one tiny backpack. 😂 Another reason I wouldn’t arrive at the last minute: checking luggage creates an additional step and potentially another queue. 🛂 STEP 5 — Head into the waiting hall Once the ticket formalities, terminal fee and luggage are sorted, you can finally enter the waiting area and relax a little. From here, watch and listen for your boarding announcement. And don’t automatically follow a crowd just because everyone suddenly gets up. Cebu Pier 1 handles multiple ferry routes, so check the destination and departure information. You want your OceanJet departure to Tagbilaran, not an accidental adventure somewhere else in the Visayas. 😂🏝️ 📢 STEP 6 — Boarding When your departure is called, have your boarding documents ready again. This is where the whole process finally starts feeling straightforward: follow the boarding instructions, proceed toward the vessel and find the seat assigned to you. Once you’re actually onboard, you can finally switch from transport logistics mode to WE’RE GOING TO BOHOL mode. 🌴💙 ⏰ SO HOW MUCH TIME WOULD I ALLOW? For our 6:00 AM departure, I would personally aim to be at Cebu Pier 1 at approximately 5:00 AM. Not because every passenger will need an entire hour to complete the formalities, but because there are several separate things that can consume time: 🎫 entering with your booking and ID 💰 terminal fee ⛴️ OceanJet counter 🎟️ seat assignment/printing 🧳 baggage check if required 🛂 terminal procedures 🚶 finding the correct waiting/boarding area 👥 possible queues And most importantly, our Trip.com instructions explicitly warn that seat-number printing stops 30 minutes before boarding. I would much rather spend an extra 20 minutes sitting in the terminal than spend my morning running between counters wondering whether we’re about to miss a ferry. 😅 For weekends, holidays, lots of luggage or your first time using Cebu Pier 1, I’d give myself an even more comfortable buffer. 📱 WHAT I LOVED ABOUT BOOKING THROUGH TRIP.COM The part I wanted to PLAN was already done before we arrived. Our reservation clearly showed: ⛴️ Cebu → Bohol Island / Tagbilaran 📅 October 2 🕕 6:00 AM 💺 Economy Class 👫 2 passengers 💵 US$38.49 total And, importantly for a first-time passenger, the booking also included a step-by-step boarding guide explaining exactly what to do at the pier. That little “How to use” section is worth reading BEFORE you arrive rather than discovering it while standing inside the terminal. 💡 MY FIRST-TIMER OCEANJET CHECKLIST ✔️ Book the ferry in advance if your schedule depends on a specific departure. ✔️ Download/screenshot your e-ticket before leaving the hotel. ✔️ Bring your passport/required ID. ✔️ Go to the correct Cebu pier — ours was Pier 1. ✔️ Don’t assume an online booking means you can walk directly onto the boat. ✔️ Look for the terminal-fee counter. ✔️ Then find the OceanJet counter for your seat assignment/printing. ✔️ Sort out checked luggage if you have it. ✔️ Keep some Philippine pesos accessible for port-related expenses. ✔️ Enter the waiting hall and pay attention to announcements. ✔️ Keep your documents handy until you’re actually onboard. ✔️ For a 6:00 AM ferry, I’d personally target around 5:00 AM at the pier. 🌊 PLAN IT OR WING IT? For local jeepneys around Cebu? I’m happy to wing it. For wandering around Bohol after we arrive? Absolutely wing it. #travelmistakesmoments One of the easiest travel mistakes to make in Cebu is choosing accommodation based on the words “great location” without asking one important question: great location for WHAT? 😅 Avida Towers Cebu is a huge condominium complex in the IT Park area, and there are tons of apartments here offered as short-term rentals. On paper, it can look almost perfect: modern neighborhood, restaurants everywhere, malls nearby, swimming pool, security, Grab at your fingertips and plenty of apartments at competitive prices. And yes — the location is genuinely highly rated by guests. Some listings here score around 9–9.3/10 specifically for location. But after staying in this part of Cebu, I think there is an important warning worth sharing: ⚠️ If the Cebu you are imagining is beaches, tropical nature, silence and waking up somewhere that feels like an island paradise, choosing IT Park can be a travel mistake. This is Cebu City, not a beach destination. 🌴 WHERE IS THE BEACH? This is probably the biggest misconception. You are not going to walk outside Avida Towers and find palm trees, white sand and turquoise water. The famous resort/beach areas are mainly on Mactan Island, while many of Cebu’s spectacular nature experiences require leaving Cebu City completely. Even Mactan-Cebu International Airport is about 8 km away in a straight line, but actual driving distances and times are longer because you have to cross between Cebu and Mactan. So if your plan is basically “wake up → beach → swim → sunset → repeat”, I would absolutely look at accommodation on Mactan rather than here. 🏝️ 🏙️ IT PARK FEELS LIKE A CITY — BECAUSE IT IS ONE This area makes much more sense for people who want restaurants, cafés, shopping, nightlife, coworking and city convenience. You are surrounded by buildings, offices, traffic and commercial development. It can be incredibly practical, but it doesn’t give you that peaceful tropical Philippines atmosphere many first-time visitors picture when booking Cebu. And silence isn’t guaranteed either. Experiences vary considerably by tower, floor and direction of the apartment, but residents and guests have reported street entertainment, motorcycles, neighboring-unit noise and slow elevators during busy periods. One 2026 guest specifically described a 29-floor building with only two slow elevators, while other guests have also mentioned elevator delays at peak times. 📍 AND WHAT ABOUT CEBU’S MAIN ATTRACTIONS? This is another thing I would check before booking. Approximate straight-line distances from Avida/IT Park are: 📌 Ayala Center Cebu — ~1.5–1.7 km 📌 Cebu Taoist Temple — ~2.1–2.3 km 📌 Casa Gorordo Museum — ~3.5–3.7 km 📌 Yap-Sandiego Ancestral House — ~3.6–3.8 km 📌 Colon Street — ~4 km 📌 Basilica Minore del Santo Niño — ~4.2–4.4 km 📌 Magellan’s Cross — ~4.3–4.5 km 📌 Fort San Pedro — ~4.3–4.5 km 📌 Temple of Leah — ~5.5–5.6 km 📌 Tops Lookout — ~5.8–5.9 km. And remember: those are map distances, not realistic Cebu driving times. Traffic can turn a relatively small number of kilometers into a much longer journey. So Avida isn’t really a “step outside and explore historic Cebu on foot” location either. For the old-city sights — Magellan’s Cross, Basilica del Santo Niño, Fort San Pedro, Colon Street and the heritage houses — you’ll normally need transportation. 🌿 AND FOR CEBU’S FAMOUS NATURE? This is where location matters even more. If your Cebu bucket list is waterfalls, canyoneering, sardines, whale sharks, snorkeling and beautiful beaches, most of those experiences are not in Cebu City at all. Moalboal, Kawasan Falls and the major southern-Cebu experiences require proper trips out of the city. So staying in IT Park doesn’t give you any particular advantage for them. Basically, don’t confuse “Cebu” the island/province with “Cebu City.” They can offer completely different trips. 🌊 🏢 Another thing to understand before booking: Avida Towers is a condominium complex, not one standardized hotel. Different apartments can have completely different owners, hosts, furniture, cleanliness, appliances and check-in procedures. Reviews show exactly that variation: some guests praise spotless apartments, strong Wi-Fi and well-equipped kitchens, while others report maintenance or cleanliness problems. So don’t judge your potential apartment only by the overall location rating. Read reviews for the exact unit you’re booking. ✨ BUT — THERE ARE 5 BIG REASONS TO CHOOSE IT I wouldn’t call Avida a bad place to stay at all. For the right kind of Cebu trip, it actually makes a lot of sense. 1️⃣ IT Park is incredibly convenient. Restaurants, cafés, shops and services are all around you, and Garden Bloc is only a few hundred meters away. 2️⃣ Sugbo Mercado is nearby. 🌮🍜 One of the easiest ways to sample lots of Filipino and international food without traveling across the city. 3️⃣ Great base for remote workers. 💻 Several guests specifically praise the Wi-Fi and the convenience of the area, and some apartments have proper desks or workspaces. 4️⃣ Many units have kitchens + access to a pool. 🏊♀️ For a longer stay, having an apartment rather than a standard hotel room can be genuinely useful. 5️⃣ Excellent city lifestyle. ☕🍽️ If your priority is food, shopping, Grab convenience, nightlife and having everything nearby rather than beaches, this location suddenly becomes one of its biggest strengths. 💡 My biggest lesson? Don’t ask whether accommodation has a good location. Ask whether it has a good location for YOUR trip. Avida Towers can be a very practical base for Cebu City, remote work and urban life. Step outside and you’re back in the energy of Cebu City — traffic, people, streets, buildings and the constant movement of a major Philippine city. 🌆 Step through the old stone entrance and the atmosphere changes surprisingly quickly. 🏰 These walls were created for defense. The site goes back to the beginning of the Spanish colonial era in Cebu, and for centuries its purpose was connected with military power and protection. Today, the contrast couldn’t be greater. Instead of soldiers, you’ll find tourists wandering around with cameras. 📸 Instead of preparing for battles, people sit under trees and take a break from the city. 🌳 And one of my favorite details: couples come here for romantic photoshoots. ❤️📷 Old stone walls that once represented defense now become the backdrop for engagement-style and romantic pictures. But what makes Fort San Pedro especially pleasant during a Cebu city walk is the greenery. 🌺🌴 There are trees, plants, flowers and shaded corners throughout the grounds. After walking around Cebu in the tropical heat, stepping inside feels like finding a little green pocket hidden behind centuries-old walls. It’s obviously not a replacement for Cebu’s beaches, waterfalls or mountains. 🌊⛰️ But if you only have a day in the city, places like this make a city break feel much less concrete-heavy. And that’s probably what I like most about it: history + city + greenery + everyday local life all exist inside the same small space. #sunsetplaces One of my favorite experiences was camping with friends at Tanyon Bay in Ronda, Cebu. We enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere, spent time together, and of course, watched the beautiful sunset by the sea. 🌅 The sunset views were absolutely stunning, perfect for taking photos and simply relaxing while enjoying the sound of the waves. The camping fee was ₱300 per person for an overnight stay, plus ₱300 for the tent. It’s a nice and affordable place for a simple weekend getaway with friends. #must-tryfood If you’re visiting the Philippines and keep walking past Pan de Manila thinking it’s “just another bakery,” don’t make that mistake. 😅 This Filipino bakery chain is one of my favorite easy places to explore everyday local flavors — affordable, convenient, and full of things that also make great edible souvenirs. Here are 5 things I think are worth trying at Pan de Manila 👇 🥖 1. Pandesal — the essential first choice Start with the classic. Pandesal is one of the most iconic everyday breads in the Philippines: soft inside, lightly crusty outside, slightly sweet and incredibly simple. Filipinos eat it for breakfast or merienda, often with coffee. My tip: get it as fresh and warm as possible. That’s when you understand why something so basic is so loved. 🇵🇭 ☕ 2. Merienda Fresh Roasted Drip Coffee This was such a good discovery! Instead of buying ordinary instant coffee, you can get individual drip-coffee sachets that sit directly over your cup. The box I bought contains 6 × 10 g sachets and costs ₱230 — around ₱38 per cup. Just add hot water and you have proper brewed coffee without a machine. Perfect for hotels, Airbnbs, long trips and even as a small Filipino souvenir. ✈️ And naturally, it belongs next to fresh pandesal. ☕🥖 🍞 3. Spanish Bread Despite the name, this is very much a Filipino bakery favorite. It’s a soft rolled bread with a sweet, buttery filling and breadcrumbs on the outside. If you like pastries that are comforting rather than overwhelmingly sweet, add this one to your bag. 🧀 4. Ensaymada Another Filipino bakery classic! Soft, fluffy enriched bread topped with butter, sugar and cheese. That sweet-and-salty combination may sound unusual if you’ve never tried Filipino pastries before, but it works surprisingly well. 🍩 5. Pan de Donut For something less traditional but very easy to love, try their donut-style breads. I bought a single Pan de Donut for ₱58. It’s the kind of inexpensive snack that makes Pan de Manila so dangerous — you go inside for one thing and leave carrying a bag. 😂 💡 Bonus: look beyond the bakery counter. Pan de Manila stores can have spreads, bottled products, coffee and other packaged Filipino treats, so I’d actually recommend browsing the shelves too. Some of the best finds are things you can bring home. #planitorwingit Before coming to Cebu, I could have studied every jeepney route, saved transport guides and tried to understand exactly which colorful vehicle goes where. I didn’t. 😅 And Cebu immediately reminded me why sometimes I love winging part of a trip. Jeepneys are everywhere here — bright, loud, wonderfully local and completely different from the public transport I’m used to. At first glance, the system can look slightly intimidating: different route codes, destination signs, people hopping on and off, and no familiar metro map telling you exactly what to do. But that’s also part of the experience. 🇵🇭 💡 My Cebu strategy? Plan the important journeys, wing the short ones. If I absolutely need to be somewhere at a certain time — airport, ferry or tour — I’ll plan transportation in advance. But on a relaxed sightseeing day? I’d rather leave some flexibility, check the destination written on the jeepney, ask where it’s going and turn the journey itself into part of exploring Cebu. And there’s another reason to try one: the price. As of September 28, 2026, the minimum fare for a traditional jeepney is just ₱14 for the first 4 km, with ₱2 for each additional kilometer. Modern jeepneys start at ₱17 for the first 4 km. That makes jeepneys one of the most budget-friendly ways to experience the city. 🪙✨ 📌 A few tips I wish every first-timer knew: · Look at the route code and destination signs before getting in — the colors are fun, but they don’t tell you where the jeepney is going. · Keep small peso bills and coins with you. Cash is the safest option, especially on traditional jeepneys. · Not sure? Ask the driver or another passenger before boarding. · Tell the driver when you want to get off — don’t expect a system of perfectly marked stops like a metro. · Avoid relying on a jeepney when you have a tight airport or ferry connection. The marinade caramelizes beautifully on the grill, and I especially liked it with beef. 🐷 PORK vs BEEF? For pork, I’d focus on Samgyupsal, Soy Garlic and Korean BBQ. The fattier pork works beautifully with stronger marinades, while classic samgyupsal is worth trying simply because it’s such an essential part of the Korean BBQ experience. Cebu surprised me. I came expecting to spend most of my time jumping between paid attractions, but I ended up discovering that some of the city’s most interesting places didn’t cost me anything. I started downtown at Magellan’s Cross, then walked over to the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño. The area was busy, but there was something special about seeing these historic places right in the middle of everyday Cebu. From there, I wandered around Plaza Independencia and checked out the outside of Fort San Pedro before continuing along Colon Street, where the old buildings and busy streets gave me a glimpse of the city’s everyday rhythm. The fort’s grounds are free, although entering the actual fort requires a small fee. My next stop was the Heritage of Cebu Monument, which was probably my favorite. The huge sculpture tells so much of Cebu’s history in one place. I also made time for Cebu Taoist Temple and wandered through Carbon Market. By the end of the day, I realized I had experienced plenty of Cebu without needing a big budget. #cebu

Cebu is definitely the second kind. At first glance, it looks like the perfect tropical destination: turquoise water, white sand, palm trees and endless sunshine. But spend a few days exploring beyond the city and you’ll realise Cebu has a completely different side. There are winding coastal roads, tiny towns, dramatic mountains, waterfalls hidden between limestone cliffs and adventures that somehow turn into stories you’ll still be talking about months later. And that’s exactly why Cebu keeps pulling travellers back. 🇵🇭 🌊 THE CANYONEERING ADVENTURE One of the experiences that immediately comes to mind when people talk about Cebu is canyoneering around Badian and Kawasan Falls. This isn’t your typical sightseeing activity where you walk to a viewpoint, take a photo and leave. You’re actually part of the adventure. The route takes you through a beautiful canyon landscape, with towering rock walls, clear pools and flowing freshwater. Depending on the route and conditions, you can find yourself trekking, swimming, climbing, scrambling over rocks and jumping into natural pools. And yes, some of the jumps can look absolutely terrifying when you’re standing at the edge. 😂 But once you’re in the water, the whole experience becomes less about getting the perfect photo and more about enjoying the moment. 💦 KAWASAN FALLS Then you reach the famous turquoise water of Kawasan Falls. The colour almost doesn’t look real. It’s that bright blue green shade that makes you check your camera settings because surely your phone must be exaggerating it. But the water really can look incredible. The waterfalls and surrounding jungle create one of Cebu’s most recognisable natural landscapes, and seeing it after working your way through the canyon makes the arrival feel even more rewarding. If you’re planning to do canyoneering, remember that conditions can affect access and the exact experience. Water levels, weather and local safety rules matter, so follow your guide rather than treating an online itinerary as a guarantee. 🛣️ THE ROAD IS PART OF THE TRIP One thing I love about Cebu is that some of the best memories aren’t necessarily at the final destination. They’re somewhere between destinations. A random roadside viewpoint. A tiny local restaurant. A village you weren’t planning to stop in. A conversation with someone you met for five minutes. A beautiful stretch of coastline appearing around a corner. That is the part of travelling around Cebu that photos don’t really capture. You start with a destination in mind, but the road keeps giving you little reasons to slow down. 🏝️ CEBU ISN’T JUST ONE BEACH If your Cebu itinerary is only beaches, you’re missing a huge part of what makes the island interesting. The Philippines sits within one of the world’s most biodiverse marine regions, so the underwater scenery can be just as memorable as what you see above the surface. Depending on where you go, you can encounter colourful reef systems, tropical fish, turtles and other marine life. If you’re not a diver, don’t worry. There are plenty of snorkelling experiences that let you enjoy the water without needing scuba certification. Just choose operators carefully, follow local guidelines and avoid touching marine life or coral. 🌅 THE BEAUTY OF A CEBU ROAD TRIP There’s something about travelling around Cebu by road that makes the island feel much bigger than it looks on a map. You leave one town and suddenly the scenery changes. Busy streets become quiet roads. Buildings give way to greenery. The coastline appears. Then the mountains. Then another little village. And eventually you arrive somewhere that looks completely different from where you started that morning. That contrast is what makes a Cebu trip feel like an adventure rather than simply a beach holiday. 👫 SOLO, COUPLE OR GROUP? Cebu works surprisingly well for different types of travellers. Travelling solo? You can join organised activities and meet people along the way without needing to plan every detail yourself. Travelling as a couple? You can mix adventure days with slower evenings, beaches and sunset spots. Travelling with friends? This is where Cebu gets chaotic in the best possible way. Canyoneering with your friends, getting soaked, screaming during cliff jumps and then laughing about it over food afterwards is exactly the kind of travel memory that stays with you. And if you’re travelling with a group, splitting transport costs can also make longer road trips easier to manage. 🎒 WHAT TO BRING FOR ADVENTURE DAYS Keep your packing simple. Swimming in water that looks unreal. Laughing with the people you’re travelling with. El Nido was one of those places I had seen so many times online that I wondered if it would actually look that good in real life. After spending 4 days here, I can say the limestone cliffs, clear water and small islands really are worth the trip. Here’s my simple 4D3N itinerary and how I got there. ✈️ How to Get to El Nido The easiest option is flying directly to El Nido Airport (LIO) from Manila or Cebu. Flights are limited and can be more expensive, but you save a lot of travel time. Another option is flying to Puerto Princesa International Airport (PPS) and taking a van to El Nido. The van ride takes around 5–6 hours and usually costs around $12–20, depending on the operator and vehicle. I chose the Puerto Princesa route because there are usually more flight options and the overall cost can be lower. 🌴 Day 1 — Arrive in El Nido After arriving in El Nido, I checked into my hotel and spent the afternoon walking around town. El Nido town itself is quite small, so most places are easy to reach by walking or tricycle. In the evening, I went to Corong Corong Beach to watch the sunset. It was a relaxing way to start the trip. 🛶 Day 2 — Island Hopping Tour A This was the highlight of my trip. I joined Tour A, which usually includes places such as Big Lagoon, Secret Lagoon, Shimizu Island and Seven Commandos Beach. The scenery is exactly what you imagine when you think of El Nido — turquoise water surrounded by huge limestone cliffs. A shared island-hopping tour usually costs around $20–30/person, depending on the season and inclusions. Bring a waterproof bag because you'll spend quite a lot of time getting on and off the boat. 🌅 Day 3 — Nacpan Beach + Sunset Instead of doing another full-day boat tour, I kept the third day slower. I visited Nacpan Beach, one of the most famous beaches around El Nido. The beach is long, quiet and much more spacious than the small beaches visited during island hopping. In the afternoon, I went back toward town and spent the evening at Las Cabanas Beach for sunset. This was probably my favorite part of the trip because there was no strict schedule — just beach, food and sunset. ✈️ Day 4 — Slow Morning & Departure I had breakfast, walked around El Nido one more time and checked out. If you're flying from Puerto Princesa, remember to leave plenty of time for the 5–6 hour van journey. If your budget allows, flying directly from El Nido Airport is much more convenient. 🍜 What to Eat in El Nido Don't spend the whole trip eating Western food. El Nido has plenty of Filipino dishes worth trying. 🍚 Chicken Adobo — chicken cooked with soy sauce, vinegar and spices. Simple but very flavorful. 🍢 Pork BBQ — grilled skewers that are great for a quick and inexpensive meal. 🍜 Pancit — Filipino stir-fried noodles, usually served with meat, seafood or vegetables. 🥥 Halo-Halo — a colorful Filipino dessert with shaved ice, sweet beans, fruit and other toppings. Perfect after a hot day at the beach. Fresh seafood is also worth trying, especially at local restaurants around town. Prices can vary a lot, so I recommend checking the menu before ordering. 💡 Travel Tips for El Nido 1. Bring cash 💵 Some smaller restaurants, shops and local services may not accept cards. ATMs are available, but it's better not to rely on them completely. 2. Bring a dry bag It's extremely useful during island hopping. Your phone, wallet and camera can easily get wet when transferring between the boat and beach. 3. Don't overpack If you're staying in El Nido town and joining boat tours, a small backpack is much more convenient than a large suitcase. 4. Book island hopping early Tour A is very popular, especially during peak season. Booking in advance can save time and give you more choices. 5. Bring reef-safe sunscreen You'll spend a lot of time outdoors and on the water, so sunscreen is essential. 6. Expect slow island life Don't expect everything to run exactly on time. Water looking so clear, yet I picked up a bag full of trash in about 40 mins😒 I have been trying my best to reduce trash for about a decade, bringing my own reusable bags everywhere and refusing as much disposable plastic as I can, and still, some plastic bags creep in my house. I will stuff them in every corner of my suitcase, and always bring a lot more than what seems necessary. Wherever I go, I can't help it and pick up trash. The plastic bags end up super useful then, after they've helped keeping slightly damp clothes, making sure no thing leaks all over my bags, etc. I have also been bringing empty dog food bags as they are so sturdy and have ziplock openings: I use them to protect electronics and notebooks when it's raining, do my laundry (stuff the dirty clothes with warm water and soap, shake it all up and step on it to get the water out)... I've had people seeing me using them asking if I could leave it to them as I leave. Cebu is relatively affordable even among Southeast Asian destinations, and compared to my other overseas trips, I was able to keep costs quite low. In particular, dining and transportation costs via Grab felt significantly cheaper than in Japan. However, there were a few things I thought, "I wish I had known this beforehand!" after actually going, so I'll introduce them here along with the costs. ⸻ 💰 Cebu Travel Expenses The general breakdown of the costs for this trip is as shown in the image. Including airfare, hotels, meals, sightseeing, and transportation, I was able to travel quite reasonably overall. Of course, costs vary greatly depending on the hotel rank and activities, but for those who say "I want to go abroad but want to keep costs down as much as possible," Cebu is highly recommended. ⸻ 4 Things to Watch Out for on a Cebu Trip ① Be careful with domestic transfers in Manila Many people traveling from Japan to Cebu use routes that involve a domestic transfer in Manila. What you need to be careful about is the transfer at Manila Airport. The airport is quite large, and depending on the situation, you may need to move between terminals. And if you get the terminal wrong, it’s a big deal. In my case, there was a gate change midway, and it was quite a rush. If you think, "Once I get to Manila, I just need to get on the plane to Cebu!", you might actually struggle quite a bit. If you are booking a connecting flight, I recommend checking the terminal thoroughly in advance. It's especially safer to allow plenty of time for your layover. ⸻ ② It's recommended to carry some cash There are many shops in Cebu where you can use credit cards, and I didn't feel like "cards can't be used at all!" during my trip. However, there are occasionally shops that only accept cash. Therefore, instead of going completely card-only, it's recommended to have a certain amount of cash ready. Basically, I used a style of using my card for most things and using cash where necessary. I don't think you need to exchange a large amount of money all at once, but having a minimum amount of cash will give you peace of mind. ⸻ ③ Whale shark tours are very early in the morning! A popular activity for Cebu trips is the whale shark tour. I participated as well, but what you should be careful about here is how early the meeting time is. It depends on the tour, but hotel departure times are often around 3:00 to 4:00 AM. It’s really early 😂 Moreover, since the environment during the tour isn't one where you can take a leisurely shower, I personally strongly recommend making sure you can return to your hotel afterward. I used the hotel's late check-out on this day. After returning to the hotel from the tour, I: · Took a shower · Changed clothes · Slept a little · Then checked out leisurely That was the flow. This was really great. Since it was after waking up at 3:00 AM and participating in a long tour, just being able to return to the hotel, shower, and rest in bed for a bit helped me recover a lot. If you're planning a whale shark tour, please definitely consider a late check-out. ⸻ ④ The Grab app is a must! The thing I personally recommend most for a Cebu trip is to install Grab beforehand. I basically used Grab for all my transportation. Personally, Grab felt safer than using street taxis. You can specify the destination on the app, and you know the fare in advance. And above all, the fare was quite cheap. It was useful in various situations, such as moving from the airport to the hotel, going to sightseeing spots, and returning to the hotel. It's safer to download the app and complete account registration while you're still in Japan. If you're going to Cebu, I think Grab is almost a mandatory app! ⸻ 【Summary】 · 🇵🇭 Check terminals for domestic transfers in Manila · 💵 Have a certain amount of cash ready · 🐋 Late check-out is recommended since whale shark tours are early morning · 🚕 Utilize Grab for transportation These four points are things I thought "I wish I had known beforehand!" after actually going.
