This place is a cool and quiet spot perfect for a family trip during August and September.
01 Yichang | Hubei
When bringing children to Yichang, don't rush straight to the dam. Take a leisurely walk along the riverbank first. In the early morning, the Yangtze River's Three Gorges section is still misty, the river surface is hazy, and the sounds of ship horns can be heard from afar. Children can stand on the riverside promenade and watch cargo ships queuing to pass through the locks for half an hour.
⏰ 7:00 to 9:00 AM is the most comfortable time; the sun isn't too strong, the river breeze is cool, and you can rest under the shade of trees in the riverside park when you get tired.
The Three Gorges Family Scenic Area is best visited in the afternoon, avoid midday. Take a boat into the Longjinxi River; the stilted houses on both banks are adorned with red lanterns, and Tujia girls sing folk songs at the bow of the boat, captivating children. The stream water is refreshingly cool, perfect for wading barefoot.
⚠️ There are many steps in the scenic area, which can be overwhelming for strollers. A baby carrier or baby carrier is recommended; children over three years old can walk independently.
The Three Gorges Waterfall is a refreshing spot throughout the day. Reaching the base of the waterfall, the spray hits you head-on, instantly lowering the perceived temperature by five degrees. Remember to bring an extra set of dry clothes for your children, and also pack raincoats, otherwise they'll easily catch a cold from being wet and exposed to the wind after leaving the scenic area.
🚄 It's about a 40-minute taxi ride from the city center. Buy tickets online a day in advance; the queues on-site can be incredibly long.
The Qingjiang Gallery is perfect for a full day. Take a boat trip to admire the green mountains and clear waters on both banks, let your children run around on the deck, and watch egrets fly after the boat. Have lunch on the boat with a local farm-style meal: fried small fish and braised potatoes with cured pork—the kids will devour two bowls of rice!
⏰ Boats after 2 PM are less crowded, giving you a private experience, but don't miss the last return boat; make sure you check the schedule before boarding.
02 Haidong|Qinghai
Haidong is like a natural air-conditioned room in the summer. The best time to visit the Huzhu Tu Ethnic Homeland Park is in the morning, before the sun fully penetrates, leaving the prayer wheels and traditional Tu houses shaded. Children are most interested in the Tu embroidery and the traditional spinning wheel, and can easily spend half a day watching them. Tu women make pancakes on-site; the hot, fluffy pancakes sprinkled with sugar are so delicious that kids can easily eat two in one go.
Youning Temple is located on a mountain, and the afternoon is the best time to visit for better lighting. The temple is quiet, with towering pines and cypresses providing ample shade, and the steps are worn smooth and shiny. Children can count the steps; there are over 300 steps from the mountain gate to the main hall, and they can walk and count without getting tired.
⚠️ Loud noises are not allowed inside the temple, and shoes must be removed before entering the halls. Explain the rules to your children beforehand. It can be windy at the mountaintop, so bring a light jacket for your children to keep them warm.
For accommodation, choose Huzhu County, as it's close to both attractions. In the evening, the county town's night market offers braised mutton in a clay pot. A small portion is enough for a family of three. The potato noodles soak up the meat broth, and the kids can easily eat a whole bowl of rice with it.
🚄 It takes about an hour by taxi from Xining, but hiring a car is more cost-effective. You can visit both destinations in a day without rushing.
03 Zhaoqing | Guangdong
Xinghu Lake in Zhaoqing is a hidden summer retreat for Guangdong locals. Entering the scenic area after 6 pm in summer, the sun is setting, the lake surface shimmers with golden light, and the reflection of the Seven Star Crags is clearly visible. Children love taking a boat ride through the waterways between the rocky mountains, watching egrets fly overhead, you can even hear the flapping of their wings.
⏰ Before 10 am is the best time for cycling around the lake. Rent a bicycle with a child seat and pedal slowly along the greenway. The bald cypress forest by the lake is surprisingly cool for summer; the cicadas chirp loudly, but the dense shade makes it feel three or four degrees cooler than in the city.
⚠️ Don't try to tough it out at noon. Go back to the city and find a dessert shop. Their herbal jelly and mung bean soup are freshly made; a bowl will revitalize your child.
There are several types of tickets for Xinghu Lake. Walking along the lakeside path is free, but you need a ticket to enter the Seven Star Crags. If you have young children, just walk along the lake and watch the fish; you don't necessarily need to go into the caves.
📍 There's a shallow water area near the East Gate Square, only ankle-deep, where kids can splash and play. Remember to bring spare sandals and shorts.
04 Yichun|Jiangxi
Mingyue Mountain in Yichun is the kind of cool place you "don't want to leave once you've arrived." The cable car ride from the foot of the mountain to the summit takes twenty minutes, with a significant drop that will make your ears ring. The Qingyun Plank Road at the summit is built on a cliff, with clouds swirling below. Children are both scared and excited, holding onto the railings as they walk the entire way, feeling an immense sense of accomplishment.
⏰ Go up the mountain before 8 am; there are fewer people and more fog, making the plank road seem to float in the clouds. We had a bowl of Yichun rice noodles at the mountaintop restaurant for lunch. You can choose the non-spicy level; it came with a steamed egg, and the kids ate it all. Don't take the cable car down the mountain; walk the trail. There are waterfalls along the way, and the sound of rushing water is delightful—the kids can play in the water all the way down.
⚠️ The trail is slippery, so make sure your kids wear non-slip shoes, not sandals.
At the foot of Mingyue Mountain is Wentang Town, where foot baths are free. After a long day of hiking, we found a pool on Gujingquan Street in the evening. The water temperature was just right, and the kids' little feet got all red and rosy from soaking. The town's selenium-rich salted preserved eggs are a specialty; buy a few as souvenirs to mix with tofu at home—the kids loved them too.
🚄 It takes about half an hour by taxi from Yichun Station to Wentang Town. Staying in the town the next day is the most convenient way to go up the mountain.
05 Mudanjiang|Heilongjiang
Summer in Mudanjiang is so cool that you forget it's August. Jingpo Lake is the highlight. It's as vast as the sea, and the water is so clear you can see the rocks at the bottom. Boating on the lake, children can be glued to the gunwale watching the splashes and the occasional fish leaping out of the water, keeping them excited for hours.
⏰ The best lighting is for boats after 3 PM, when the lake glistens with golden light, making photos perfect without filters.
Diaoshuilou Waterfall is located on the north side of the scenic area. There are diving performances every day at 10 AM and 2 PM, which kids watch with rapt attention. The mist at the base of the waterfall is refreshing; standing there for five minutes will cool you down completely.
⚠️ The viewing platform is close to the waterfall, so remember to use waterproof bags for your phone and camera to avoid fogging the lenses.
Mudanjiang city itself is also great for exploring. Jiangbin Park, built along the Mudanjiang River, is a popular spot for locals to stroll in the evening. Kids can rent small boats and paddle on the river; the sunset paints the water orange, creating a truly soothing scene.
🍜 The "Lao Song Bin" restaurant in the city center is famous for its sweet and sour pork, with a crispy outer layer; my child can easily eat half a plate by himself.
🚄 Jingpo Lake is about a two-hour drive from the city center. You can hire a car or join a day tour; avoid taking public transportation yourself, it's too much of a hassle.
06 Zhengzhou|Henan
Zhengzhou summers are hot, but those who know how to have fun can still find cool places. Zhenwei Water City is a newly built waterfront area with shady trees on both sides of the waterways; it's most comfortable to visit in the evening. Children can wade in the shallow water, while adults can sit on the shore drinking plum juice; the breeze carrying the steam is even more pleasant than an air-conditioned room.
📍 There's a handmade cold noodle shop at the east entrance; the sesame sauce is rich, and the chili oil is fragrant. Kids who don't like spicy food can order the original flavor.
Songshan Shaolin Temple is an all-day activity, so it's recommended to go in the morning.
⏰ Arrive at the scenic area before 8 AM. First, visit the Shaolin Temple, then catch the 10:30 AM martial arts performance – the kids will be completely captivated. Have lunch outside the scenic area for braised noodles; the mutton broth is rich and creamy, and the noodles are chewy – the kids can easily slurp down a whole bowl.
⚠️ It gets very sunny hiking in the afternoon. If you have kids, take the cable car up and down; don't force them to climb.
Xiliuhu Park is free and a local favorite for families with children. The beach area by the lake is perfect for kids to play in the sand all afternoon; the water is shallow and safe, and parents can sit in the shade and supervise. Remember to book your visit to the museum three days in advance through their official WeChat account; it's closed on Mondays, so don't make a wasted trip. There's a dinosaur exhibit inside that kids will love; leave at least two hours for it.
07 Zaozhuang | Shandong
The ancient city of Taierzhuang in Zaozhuang is a completely different world during the day and at night. It's hot during the day, but the ancient town is crisscrossed by waterways. Taking a rowboat, the boatwoman sings Shandong folk songs, and the wind carries the mist of the water, which the children can easily splash with.
⏰ Enter the town after 4 PM, first exploring the daytime sights, then check into the guesthouse.
The evening is the highlight. The ancient town is brightly lit, its reflections shimmering in the water, captivating the children. There are sugar painting stalls along the streets, where the craftsmen paint and sell on the spot; the children hold up the dragon-shaped sugar paintings, reluctant to eat them.
🍜 Dinner is at "Canal Family Restaurant" for spicy chicken, a mild version. The chicken is tender, served with scallion pancakes. The children imitate the local way of eating, laughing so hard their faces are covered in crumbs.
⚠️ The cobblestone streets in the ancient town are uneven, making strollers bumpy. It's recommended to carry the child or let them walk. Choose a guesthouse within the ancient town for nighttime views and a quieter morning with fewer crowds, perfect for taking photos.
🚄 A taxi ride from Zaozhuang Station to the ancient city takes about half an hour. Tickets can be bought on the day of travel, but it's best to book in advance for holidays.
08 Jincheng | Shanxi
The Huangcheng Xiangfu in Jincheng is the kind of place you might think your kids will be bored, but they'll end up not wanting to leave. This Qing Dynasty castle-like complex boasts high walls and layered courtyards; kids can easily spend an entire afternoon playing hide-and-seek.
⏰ Arrive before 9 am when the sunlight shines obliquely on the brick walls, creating beautiful photos, and there will be fewer crowds.
There's a live performance inside the scenic area telling the story of Chen Tingjing, with many martial arts scenes that will keep kids glued to their screens.
⚠️ Showtimes are limited, so check the schedule before entering the park to avoid missing it. Have lunch outside the scenic area with Jincheng-style braised pork and a bowl of millet porridge—the kids will enjoy it immensely.
Next to Huangcheng Xiangfu is the Xiangfu Manor, which has a small grove of trees with dense shade; you can easily spend an afternoon relaxing on a picnic blanket.
📍 There's handmade vinegar for sale at the entrance of the manor; you can try it. My child frowned at the sourness, but couldn't stop eating it with cold dishes.
🚄 It's about a 40-minute taxi ride from Jincheng East Station. I recommend hiring a car for the return trip.
These eight places are all great for taking kids to escape the summer heat in August and September. Which one are you planning to visit first? Let's chat in the comments; maybe we'll find some like-minded people.
