Wow, Caerphilly Castle is absolutely incredible! Standing here, gazing at its massive walls and the surrounding moats, you really get a sense of its sheer scale. It's so much bigger than I imagined, a proper medieval powerhouse. Exploring the towers and the impressive gatehouses, you can almost hear the echoes of knights and battles. And that leaning tower – how has it stood for so long?! It's beautifully preserved and incredibly atmospheric. It's a beautiful walk, you can see the original walls from all angles and the grassy area and moat provides. There will be lots of ducks and geese around too. It's around a 20 minute circumference walk around the walls and it's very enjoyable The ruins themselves are very impressive. Huge thick stone walls, windows with slots in, drawbridge, flags. This really gives an idea of what life would have been like here in the past. Where: Caerphilly, Wales UK When: July 2017 Wales is know for its historic castles and strongholds and while most are in ruins there is something magical about stepping on to the land where these majestic towers once stood. Some castles have more of the structures still standing than others but each still manages to tell a story of old (even if you have to use a little imagination to picture it). Caerphilly Castle still has a number of walls still standing, some showing the various levels and floors that stood 3-4 stories high. And there are still plenty of turrets and chambers you can climb around which is what we did one glorious afternoon in July 2017. This particular trip was made even more special by some visiting Welsh dragons Dewi & Dwynwen. At the time of our visit the Dragons were only in Caerphilly for a holiday but it appears that they have made the castle their personal lair. We very much enjoyed the tale of their love story on our visit and are glad to see they are still around. This is a perfect mix Fantasy and History and I can not wait to visit again. #gooutside

These are perfect for families across all the seasons. . Save this for a sunny day in South Wales and tick off some Welsh trig points! It’s surprising how having a physical goal to reach can really help motivate a person, especially kids. So if you want to start ticking off some Trig points but don’t know where to start here are 3 beginner friendly ones. . 1. Caerphilly Mountain Technically a hill but still offers up some fantastic views across Caerphilly and Rhondda Cynon Taff. There is an easy circular route from the Snack Bar carpark that takes you up to the Trig Point and around. We do this often and takes around 30mins although you can extend the route (see AllTrails for some ideas). . 2. The Garth Just over 1000 feet this is a fantastic first Trig for kids who like a bit of an adventure and challenge and the views across both Cardiff and the Severn as well as The Valleys is fantastic. There are many routes ranging in length but I would start with the AllTrails circular that takes around 1-1.5hrs. . 3. Twyn Y Gaer, Bannau Brycheiniog A lovely wander up along Mynydd Illtud to the Iron Age fort of Twyn Y Gaer with it’s fantastic Trip point and views of the surrounding mountains. The trail starts at the National Park Visitors Centre and takes around 1.5-2hrs. The circular route is on AllTrails . Of course there are plenty of others in and around South Wales but these 3 have always been personal favourites with the kids happy to join in. Caerphilly Castle feels like a time travel. And at the free Cardiff Museum, you can even see the famous Blue Lady! And don't miss the Welsh cake, a treat only found in Wales. A fantastic day out at Europes 2nd largest castle. There are extensive grounds and ruins to explore, and a huge moat that you can walk around and enjoy on a sunny day .Inside the castle there are toilets, a picnic area and a gift shop but not much else. I understand that they're building a new cafe and eating area just inside the main gates .The leaning tower, which apparently leans further than the one in Pisa, is superb and make sure you get a picture where you're holding it up! #wales #castles #awesomepic #summervacation
