We all know that the grand dame of hotels in Manila is the venerable Manila Hotel that overlooks the bay and the Luneta. So much of our city’s history has involved this once staid and resplendent landmark that we may forget that at one time, there was another first class hotel that was the only one considered quite elegant enough to attract foreign tourists arriving in Manila as well as being linked with its own history. The Hotel de Oriente was built in 1889 by Don Manuel Perez Marqueti, the father of Luis Perez Samanillo, owner of the Perez Samanillo building in Escolta. It was a first class hotel and indeed, at one time was the only one in the entire archipelago. Don Perez Marqueti selected the site in Binondo at the Plaza Calderon de la Barca (now Plaza Lorenzo Ruiz) next to the La Insular Cigarette and Cigar Factory. Its location was quite convenient, just a few blocks off the docks of the Pasig, next to the Chinese retail businesses and close to the busy Escolta shopping district, as well as the old walled city of Intramuros. The Spanish architect Juan Jose Huervas y Arizmendi, who also designed the La Insular building, was commissioned to design the hotel at a cost of $100,000. It had three floors with 83 rooms, stables for 25 horses, an attic, and a broad entrance floored and roofed in red clay tiles. It was an elegant building with seven bays along its front. On the ground floor was a narrow arcade with Moorish arches, with the arch on the central bay rising to the top of the second floor. The windows and ventanillas on the lower floor were protected by iron grilles. There were windows also on the entresuelo (mezzanine). I got lucky to let my stress out a bit for a weekend.Just a two-hour ferry from Manila to the southernmost tip of Bataan Peninsula, you will reach Camaya Coast Beach Resort. The resort welcomes you a fine sand to get a good tan. Adults will definitely enjoy kayaking here. It is also a great place for family picnics as the resort offers many tables under coconut trees.Children would definitely love to spend their relaxation on the kiddies pool. For those who wish to see the beautiful sunset, you can stay overnight. Shuttles would give you a ride to roam around inside the resort.The entire surrounding of the resort maintained its cleanliness.This place is really ideal for family getaways as well as a day tour from the busy metropolis of Manila. Cut flowers like aster, chrysanthemum and gerbera are locally cultivated while bamboo and jungle vines can be gathered from Orani’s forestlands. Seafood like milkfish, tilapia, prawns, crabs, mussels and oysters are caught in Orani’s fishing grounds and fishponds. #falladventures #travel #familytravel I had a fantastic time on the Pamulaklakin Forest Trail. In fact, it was the best experience I had had in a long time. I learned about outdoor survival from the Alta, a tribe of hunters and gatherers who live in the jungle on the island of Luzon, in the Philippines. I spent two hours walking through the jungle with Noel, my Aeta guide. Along the way, he showed me how to identify and harvest edible plants and medicinal herbs. He also showed me how to find water in the jungle. In the photos below, you see Noel and me drinking water from sections of a water vine. Noel found the vine, cut it into sections, and then gave me one to drink from, and drank from the other himself. The Aeta rank among the best friends America has ever had. During World War Two, they helped many Americans escape from Japanese POW camps and then led them to safety in Aeta villages. During the Vietnam War, Aeta trained our special forces in outdoor survival. Many former American soldiers are alive today because of the training they got from the Aeta. Without it, they surely would have died. I had wanted to get outdoor survival training from the Aeta for a long time. It was on my bucket list. It was equally important for me to have the opportunity to express my gratitude to these wonderful people for being such good friends to my country. If you enjoy the pictures, please like them!
