At 1,000 meters above sea level, with a breathtaking view over Molise and into Abruzzo, you can feel the history of the Samnites all around you. The Santuario Italico of Pietrabbondante, overlooking Mount Caraceno, is the most important reminder of Samnite religion and culture. As you explore, you’ll see the ancient stone seats of the theater from the 2nd century B.C., once used for performances and as a meeting place for the Samnite leaders. You'll also find the ancient shops along a columned walkway, as well as sacred temples that were central to Samnite life.

And amongst the highlight of this region is Archaeological area of Saepinum, close to the border with Campania and the Matese Regional Park. One of the best-preserved archaeological sites in Italy, Saepinum was founded by the Romans and has a wide range of artefacts from the period. The landscape of Molise is typically hills and valleys which draws hiking enthusiasts. I was put up in the seaside town of Tremboli which was a good balance of things.
