A lovely stay here. We were welcomed by helpful friendly staff. The room was clean and with a very comfortable bed. The beer was excellent and I tried all five they had on tap brewed on the premises. The food was also excellent. We had a snack at lunchtime and shared a fish finer sandwich and a portion of beer battered onion rings. The fish was haddock goujons in a crispy beer batter. Our evening meal was also excellent. I had steak and take pie, mushy peas and chips. My only complaint is I would have loved a lot more pastry as it was great. My wife had pork chop in a honey, mustard and cream sauce with mash, pan fried cabbage and a side salad and that was excellent. There is ample parking as well. We will definitely return.

Only met one staff member who was in the bar on arrival and also on the bar during breakfast. He was beyond rude and unfriendly, very unwelcoming. Room was dirty and towels were stained. Breakfast i specifically asked for something to leave off my plate due to allergies but it was totally ignored. Only saving grace is it’s Good location.

Arrival crossed the bridge following the sign and was met with staff smoking and a bucket of soapy water thrown on the stone paving to wade through, we were unsure where to go, after a few minutes, 1 of the guys spotted we were looking confused and directed us round the other side. Check in very friendly and very pleasant place, looking forward to the room. Room:overpriced for very small room that had a very strong wet dog smell (opened the window) extractor fan outside window, smell of old cooking oil. Asked to move rooms, not an option. Extractor fan goes off when food stops, so we can open window until 7am when it starts again Food: Booked a table as meeting friends locally, arrived on time. Ordered around 8pm the time we were booked in for, only main courses, 4 of 5 meals served 50 minutes later , last meal filled just before 9pm. Once we had finished we went to order coffee and dessert. Told food service stopped at 9pm and coffee machine switched off, only alcohol served. At no point were we asked if we would like a coffee/ dessert as the service was finishing ( not forgetting that we waited nearly an hour for 5 main courses) Although stated that service stops at 9pm, delay caused by service, should have prompted a member of staff just to enquire if it was a possibility as this is basic customer service. So tried again and begged for a couple of coffees, finally agreed reluctantly to do me a couple of Nescafés . Said goodbye to our friends and as hotel guess at 10.20pm asked for another drink, we thought we might have a nightcap, again reluctantly provided, but then on looking there was nowhere to sit as all the chairs had already been placed on top of the tables and the only one with someone sat at, appeared to be a rather dishevelled member of staff putting trading cards into a folder, so we only choice as hotel guest was to take our drink to our small smelly room. As soon as we went upstairs the staff locked the door to the pub area, so the only way in/out of hotel guest bedrooms was via the emergency exit/ guest after hours door. There is no telephone in the room and therefore all service as a hotel ceased once they shut the pub. No services at all were available if needed or if a problem. This should not be advertised as a hotel, but as a pub, rooms can be accessed if required. I would suggest if you want to continue as a hotel that you consider improving the service offered to guests, especially with the prices you are charging as you are not a bargain by any means. Awoken at 6.55am by what sounded like furniture being moved above or full scale building work For the price paid, I would have expected to be able to get A full meal with coffee when booked in advance, a room that felt unhealthy with a small time frame to allow fresh air. The staff were quite often not visible when needed or even not able to contact once pub closed, that’s really not great. In fairness, we thought the meals were of a good standard and breakfast was ve

We have been visiting this lovely little village and pub for around 8 years. The first time we came we found it by accident. Today, I think there had been an accident, in the kitchen. We arrived, as we usually do several times per year, even during COVID (when allowed) and took the only seat not reserved in the pub itself. We ordered our meal totalling just over £90. Our starter (shared) was lovely, strange layout but tasty. Our mains came (I just wish I had taken photographs) as there were visible differences between two meals that should have been the same. We chose the Collywobble Steak Pie. My daughters was lovely. Mine was inedible. I spoke to a member of staff who sent a a lady out to speak to me. She apologised and said she would tell the chef and ask him to cook another one fresh one. Hmmm, within 5 minutes I had a new pie, chips and peas. (In 5 minutes- I don’t think so.) The lady did come back to check it was okay and I, ever the optimist, said it’s not good but hopefully next time we come they will get it right. She went away to tell the chef and she did not return. My meal was left on the plate. I did take the crust off but as it was as hard as the knife I tried to cut it with, I just sat back and nibbled on my daughter’s leftovers. Another waitress came in to collect our dishes, I explained to her, the saga of the meal, and she said hang on I’ll get the other lady (the one I saw the first time) back out to speak to me. Obviously, she was either too nervous to explain to the chef or the man behind the bar beacuse the poor waitress came out again and said to hang on as they were talking to the manager behind the bar. I sat and waited for around 5 minutes then asked what was happening. The waitress said to just speak to the man behind the bar at which point the man behind the bar ducked his head in to the till as if to avoid questions. I just walked out. A loss of the meal is a lot for me but they will lose more. (Might only be a drop in the ocean to them but we will see.) Pathetic service from a pub we have enjoyed for nearly a decade. I am a disabled woman who visits with many different people. Not any more. There’s one thing I will miss but I’m sure it can be replaced, the special brews! We usually buy 2 mixed cases of them each time too!

Called on the 23/06/2022 for an evening meal prior to a long journey back home day after…Partner ordered and bought two drinks . waited just one hour for the meal. Partner said his was ok ish. Mine was two fish cakes on a bed of lettuce with sauce plus a potion of thin chips. I tried to cut one fish cake it shot off my plate onto the floor .the other the same rock hard on the out side and burning hot inside..the chips just broke in half so hard..my meal was roughly £13.00 ..partner had a special said it was ok ..pheasant..then asked for two blobs of ice cream..£3.95 each was more like one blob with a desert spoon..meanwhile the young man waiting on was clearing the table before we had finished and stood there waiting for our glasses.. we were going to have another drink but decided enough..plus two children on the next table one being sick obviously the other non stop whinging on top note parents just ignoring…never again far too expensive for what we got .

We stayed last Thursday (last minute booking with our doggy) we received such a warm welcome. The room was so cosy and the facilities were spot on. We slept so well, such a lovely quiet room. The food and service was excellent. Thank you again and we look forward to returning. Mel, Teo & Alfie

This is a very good pub, and Brian would undoubtedly have been proud of the progress made by Alison and the lads. However, the practice of reserving tables currently in place tends to create a sense of exclusion for us and presumably others, as we're often informed about certain tables being unavailable due to reservations. On a recent occasion, despite having booked and paid a deposit for a table, we were reassigned to a different spot upon arrival and later noticed that our original table for four remained vacant even after our stay of an hour and a half. It's clear that booking is essential for accommodating larger groups, but the traditional ease of just dropping in for the best pie and pint in the area appears to be under threat. In my view, this reservation policy diminishes the allure of what is, one of the finest pubs in the area. Terry Fisher
