I was on a walking trip and arrived at the Griffin late on a very hot summer afternoon. The welcome was great and the beer, lovely, though the tables in the beer garden had not been cleaned for some time.
My room faced the street and had been absorbing the sun for the whole of the afternoon and was like a sauna, so I had to fully open the window. By the time I retired to bed it had cooled somewhat and in my exhaustion I did fall quickly to sleep, but with the window still fully open, the morning traffic noise woke me early. Maybe worth requesting a room facing the back of the hotel if these are not more expensive. The room was also quite small. Whilst perfect for me as a solo traveller, had my wife been accompanying me, one of us would have slept against the wall.
The food in the evening was very good and well priced. My steak was cooked rare, as requested - not something that happens often. Midweek continental breakfast was simple, but very nice.
Despite my comments about the room, overall, it was very good value for money and I would still recommend it.
