The hotel is reminiscent of old royal palaces and big lush gardens. The interior decor and colour schemes are subtly elegant in hues of off-whites and beige. The surrounding peaceful and views absolutely stunning. The reception service is friendly, especially the South African lady is lovely. The breakfast chef Sonja is amazingly fast, efficient and funny - everywhere at the same time!! The cleaning lady was sweet & always smiling. The ‘guard goose’ was also cute & always noisy ;)) It is clear that the entire premises need some uplifting & if the gardener had same tempo & speed as breakfast chef, the garden would be spellbinding. The beautiful place deserves to be brought back to it’s original glory. Yet, even at present, it is lovely and great value for money.

this hotel should not be advertising five stars . because the conditions the room give it to me was very poor dirty and old carpet . And curtains, dirty and broken and old the walls was crock everywhere . The bathroom was dirty . My bed only be change one or two time . I was there for one week. five stars hotel should have a service 24 /7 but this one the bar was closing at 11 o’clock. The breakfast was very poor . I stayed before different hotel in Funchal only three stars . compared with this one, this one should be only one stars. only thing positive in this hotel was the view is nice . I will not recommend this hotel to any my friends to stay or family.

Disappointing overall. Not even close to 5 star hotel, prior reviews pretty accurate. Broken air conditioning- was told only some rooms had it (not sure if that was because a piece of hotel wasn’t equipped to have AC or if it was just broken in some parts). Slept with window wide open but without a breeze it was still way too hot to sleep this time of year. Tried sleeping with hair all wet AND wet towels and still had terrible nights of sleep. Pretty bad breakfast buffet. I was literally chastised by a server for taking a couple of their mini croissants with me - even though restaurant was not open for lunch or dinner and I didn’t eat anything while seated except eggs and coffee. That would never ever happen at a 5 star hotel. Or honestly even a 4 star hotel, which I don’t believe this hotel even came close to. I travel literally all the time and rarely have such a negative experience (and I also have pretty reasonable expectations)!

A great place to spend 1-2 nights in Funchal, if you have a car to get into town. It has a beautiful garden, a lovely terrace overlooking Funchal, the rooms are large with a balcony, they’re clean, the breakfast is perfectly good. Having read reviews here I was a bit nervous about what I’d find. Two things are noticeable and odd, it’s a relatively large hotel, but it seems hardly anyone is there (including v few staff), and yes, it’s probably due a make-over of paint. But honestly for the price we paid, and the one night we stayed, it was a really great deal, with excellent views, a swimming pool, a comfortable nights sleep and a pleasant breakfast. An ideal landing spot before heading out into the rest of the island.

The hotel has a beautiful view but is definitely not a 5 star hotel… The breakfast is very very poor, there is almost no variety and everything is very limited. When certain foods finish, many times they are not refilled or replaced unless we spoke with someone from the hotel. We wanted to drink an expresso and were very shocked when told that that wasn’t available because it was paid. We booked as a couple and the bed was basically two small beds stuck together, no big bed as seen on the pictures on the website. Also these beds were very worn out and in need of change. There’s no tea or coffee facility inside the rooms, the fridge doesn’t work and also no bathrobes, which are very basic and always present at other 5 star hotels. The jacuzzi was out of service and the other pools are very cold, including the interior pool. The Wi-Fi is horrible, almost no Wi-Fi in our room, and other areas of the hotel such as breakfast area, contrary to what is said on the website.

Apprehensive after reading the awful negative reviews,, from arriving to leaving nothing too much trouble, the staff go above and beyond, the location is abit out of the way but the view is stunning,, the breakfast is perfect buffet , the rooms are large and comfortable, cleaned daily by lovely maids , the pool area was very peaceful. Bearing in mind we paid £480 for 2 people at Easter we were relocated to this hotel as an option for a week’s holiday what’s to moan about? Congrats to the staff for a lovely holiday x

When we arrived, we were very surprised to discover that the restaurant and bar are closed (except for breakfast) until October 2023. As we had booked half board, they proposed to take us with other guests by taxi to their sister hotel for dinner each evening. This was inconvenient and left no opportunity for pre dinner drinks or after dinner drinks/coffee. Furthermore, there were no tea/coffee making facilities in the room and no minibar (just an empty fridge). There was also no a**osphere on the hotel! We have enjoyed 2 stays at this hotel before so it was very disappointing . As this was not the experience we wanted, our tour operator moved us to another hotel. Finally, the vital information about the restaurant being closed is not mentioned on the hotel website!!!

We have just returned from this hotel and we loved it!It has an old fashioned elegance about it and its position is superb. We had a room with spectacular panoramic views(no. 412) of the hills above the town, Funchal itself and the ocean. You could see the cruise ships come in and out of the harbour. The restaurant also has stunning views from its outside terrace. The breakfast was good and plentiful, we can't speak for dinner as it was closed in the evenings, but there are so many fantastic restaurants in town we wouldn't have booked half board anyway. There are 2 pools with plenty of sunbeds----they are not very comfortable but there are green mattresses in a pile by the indoor pool and they are fine with these. Housekeeping was good and we'd like to make a special mention of Lurdes in reception, who was so pleasant and helpful. There is nothing at all near the hotel and the roads down to the town are pretty lethal for pedestrians, but we bought a bus card for 7 days' unlimited travel and it was brilliant at 22 euros each as sometimes we went there and back twice in a day as the bus stop is very close and the buses are punctual and reliable.A timetable is very useful as they are sometimes not very frequent------we usually used the no. 11.All in all a beautiful hotel in a peaceful area. Don't go if you like plenty of lively entertainment, this is not for you, but we would return in a heartbeat! Nothing to do with the hotel but we had perfect weather too!

Please please do not book this hotel. The spa is closed, no restaurant or bar open, awful customer service ie when asking for al extra towel, or a glass they sigh and complain. Dirty bedsheets And dirty towels. No bathrobe,ø in room as stated, no tissues, tea or coffe facilities, no iron, no water-boiler or ANYTHING. If you need a bottle of water or coffee you need to taxe a taxi. There is not a mini-bar. Just an empty fridge. Please please do not get the same awful experience as we did. It ruined our holiday.
