Avoid the Hipstel at all costs. The incompetent, neglegent staff at the Hipstel allowed someone who was not a guest to enter the luggage room in the middle of the night. They then left him there unsupervised for an hour over the course of the night. In that time, this man rummaged through all of the bags in the room and stole my belongings as well as others'. When I asked the employee who allowed him to go in why he did so and why he didn't stop the man, he shrugged it off and acted wholly disinterested. These are the people working at this hostel. We were assured that everything would be safe in this room and that the only ones who would access it were hostel staff, but this was not the case at all. During this whole ordeal, the management were completely unhelpful as well. The manager of the hostel refused to even speak with us until the following day. He and the owners avoided our phone calls, text messages, and emails, and lied to us constantly about the situation. At one point we were told that our things had been returned to the police station, which turned out to be another complete lie. They told us that they were partnered with an insurance company which would help with reimbursement after the robbery. After contacting the company, not only had they not filed a claim, but the company had no record of the hostel even having an account with them in the first place. As of today, June 30, nearly a month after the robbery, I have not received a single dollar in compensation for the gross negligence of this company. It would have been one thing if they had tried to make it right after they so clearly were in the wrong, but all they have done is avoided, deflected, and acted like it was no big deal. The manager told us that this is certainly not the first time that this has happened in this establishment either. It's honestly unbelievable they're still in business at this point. And to add insult to injury, there are bugs in the beds. I woke up with bug bites all over my hand and arm after the first night. The place is dirty, run-down, and your bags are open season for whoever the receptionists decide to let into the luggage room. Honestly, you're better off sleeping in a metro station. It's cleaner and safer than this place.
