Getting to Hue

Phu Bai International Airport serves Hue and is located to the south of the city. There are no airlines which provide direct flights to Hue, however, there are airlines which offer connecting flights from Singapore to Hue, such as Vietnam Airlines, VietJet Air and Jetstar Pacific Airlines. The average flight time is 5 hours 25 minutes. 

Tip: To get to the city centre, taxi and shuttle bus are the two transport options and both take about 30 minutes. 

Top Things To Do in Hue

Every year tourists are drawn to the tombs in Hue built in honour of the Emperors from the Ancient times. Some of the main tombs include the Tomb of Tu Duc, the Tomb of Minh Mang and the Tomb of Khai Dinh, all of which date from the 19th and 20th centuries which are carved to tell Buddhist legends.

The Imperial Citadel, also known as the Imperial City was where Vietnam’s emperors used to live. Although many buildings have been damaged during the war, they still make for a spectacular sight. The main highlights are the Meridian Gate which is beautifully designed and the To Mieu Temple also called the Purple Forbidden City is great to explore! 

Thien Mu Pagoda and Tu Hieu Pagoda are also interesting places to visit. Both of these dates back to the 19thcentury. The Thien Mu Pagoda is also called as the Pagoda of The Celestial Lady which is still a working monastery and offers scenic views over the Perfume Lake. 

Located outside of Hue city centre lies the Huyen Tran Princess Temple at the foot of Ngu Phong mountain. The panoramic views down over the city make the walk all the way up to the Hoa Binh belltower worth it. The temple has a huge complex covered with lotus flowers and also has a library which has important documents from the Tran Dynasty. 

Bach Ma National Park, a French-era hill station situated in the Annamite Mountains is home to lush and dense forests, a huge range of wildlife and beautiful waterfalls. This biodiverse region is well preserved and is ideal for hiking, trekking and birdwatching. 

The Perfume River is a famous waterway in Vietnam. Walk along the waterfront promenade along the river, rent a paddleboat or go for an elegant dinner cruise. 

Hue’s shopping scene is most markets, art galleries and boutiques. The city is one of the best places in Vietnam to buy authentic handicrafts and experience the local culture and food. 

Dong Ba Market is the biggest market in the province which is always lively. Here you can buy anything from local produce to handmade goods, jewellery, clothes and more. It is also a great place to try some local cuisine. Tay Loc Market, a 5-minute drive from the Imperial City is also great for tourists with plenty of shopping and food. There are some posh boutiques near the junction by Trang Tien Bridge.

Tip: It is suggested to choose cyclo as your means of transportation to visit the inner city for safety. Scooter/bicycle rental is also an alternative.
