Once described as Manila's "queen of bridges," the Jones Bridge has served not only as a way to cross the Pasig River but as a cultural icon for generations of Filipinos. The bridge was part of a scheme in the 1920s to transform Manila's downtown into a showcase of Neoclassical architecture; the bridge was destroyed during World War II, but rebuilt by the US and Philippine public works departments in 1945.
