广元牛头山因天雄关(古葭萌关)在其间，所以又称“牛首雄关”。天雄关四周群峰昂首，与剑门群峰遥相呼应，是古代北上长安，南下成都的必经要冲。
牛头山下昭化，翼山与笔架山被嘉陵江水分割，形成一幅天然太极图，堪称天下第一太极。三国时蜀将姜维曾在此祭夭拜水，站在牛头观太极，无限风水收眼底。
牛头山在昭化城西15公里，系剑门山的东支，海拔1214米。 位于清江河南岸，嘉陵江西岸，是一-座巨石耸立的大山。山腰,有天雄关险隘。山脚，有昭化古城衬托，三江蜿蜒其周。远远望去，俨然似牛立头，为此而故名。慕名而来，观山水太极，适合户外爬山爱好者!
