🎃 Halloween at theme parks
1️⃣ Sanrio Puroland | Sep 11–Nov 3
Hello Kitty, Kuromi, Cinnamoroll, Badtz-Maru, and more come together, with a first-ever collab with POP MART’s LABUBU, limited-edition merch + a spooky boat ride.
Kanto traditional festivals
1️⃣ Bon Odori at Kaminarimon, Asakusa | Sep 5 (one day only)
A stage is set up in front of Kaminarimon. 5:30–8:00 PM. Visitors can join the dance. Free to participate.
2️⃣ Akasaka Hikawa Festival | Sep 11–15
Floats, mikoshi, bon dances, taiko, and nighttime food stalls bring back Edo-period flair. The main ritual is on Sep 15 (not open to the public).
3️⃣ Nezu Shrine annual grand festival | Sep 26–27
Traditional kagura "Sanza no Mai," Edo dances, mikoshi procession, and a great spot for the vermilion torii tunnel. 2026 is a shinko-sai year (held every 4 years).
🎆 Two major fireworks festivals
1️⃣ Tone River Fireworks Festival | Sep 19, 6:30–8:30 PM
Approx. 30,000 fireworks by four of Japan’s top pyrotechnicians, with music-synced displays and extra-large starbursts. (Sakai, Ibaraki Prefecture; outside Tokyo)
2️⃣ Kita City Fireworks Festival | Sep 26, starts at 6:30 PM
Theme fireworks along the Arakawa River, with an opening drone show. Food area opens at 3:00 PM. Free viewing area at Shin-Arakawa Bridge Baseball Field.
🎮 Anime, gaming, and limited-time exhibitions
1️⃣ Tokyo Game Show 2026 | Sep 17–21
30th anniversary, extended to 5 days for the first time, with approx. 1,317 exhibitors and 254,000–300,000 attendees. Public days: Sep 19–21. (Makuhari Messe, Chiba Prefecture; outside Tokyo)
2️⃣ Warner Bros. Studio Tour Tokyo - The Making of Harry Potter special event | through Sep 6
Celebrating the 25th anniversary of the release of The Sorcerer’s Stone with a Sorting Hat ceremony experience + a behind-the-scenes look at the Invisibility Cloak. Ends Sep 6, so plan soon.
3️⃣ Ron Mueck solo exhibition | through Sep 23
Mori Art Museum. Monumental hyperreal sculptures, with 6 works making their Japan debut.
4️⃣ Tutankhamun immersive night museum | Sep 1–30
Yokohama-only evening sessions. Search for clues in dimly lit galleries and unravel the young pharaoh’s mystery.
